Day 45: More about how thin people eat:

Throwing food away and an apple a day!

Our coffee machine in the office was broken this morning and I went to Starbuck's to get a frappuccino. I noticed a slim woman with bare arms and excellent muscle definition walking in front of me and she stopped to sample a drink they were giving away at Starbuck's called "Refresher".

As I approached the store, I saw the juice drink she was tasting, and she told the promoter it was sweet. I tasted a red sample and thought it was sweet too and kept on drinking it even though I didn't really like it. The slim woman tossed hers after one sip so I tossed mine too. Why did I think I had to drink it? That was mindless drinking.

At the next corner, she stopped at a fruit stand. What a smart strategy. If I stop for something to eat on the street, it's usually a giant bagel with a ton of butter, although I really haven't done that in a long time.

I'm learning I don't have to eat or drink something I don't like especially if it's free. It's called throwing food away or leaving some in the plate. Eating fruit is a smart and healthy choice at any time like eating an apple a day.

Very smart! You don't have to eat or drink anything that you aren't hungry for and/or don't love.

Because I want to lose weight, exercise more and eat healthier, people with those qualities keep showing up in my life. I notice what they are doing and a light bulb goes off. It didn't dawn on me to throw out food I didn't like and I wonder why. Nevertheless, it's part of my plan now. My daughter is 16 and dainty at 80 lbs. She will never be heavy due to a colonoscopy she had as a baby. I don't think she would be fat because she eats like a thin person by leaving food on her plate, only eating when she's hungry and only what she wants. Although she's a dessert eater and loves her sweets, she can leave them on her plate. She clearly does not eat to live and forgets to eat. That's unimaginable to me!

Interesting that you should mention your daughter's natural food habits. Know what you mean. Actually think ALL kids eat that way if they are left alone and do not have food pushed at them. Have noticed that thin adult people eat that way too. Really believe that the human body IS designed that way, and if we change our mindset, not overriding our full signals, and sticking to small helpings in the first place, we'd be thin people too. For myself, am determined to get back to that level of obedience to my physical hunger and die to my willful head hunger. And along with that, am looking for something satisfying for my head hunger.;-)

Just read this incredible book, "Why We Eat More Than We Think - Mindless Eating" by Brian Wansink, Ph.D. I've underlined and highlighted so much of it! He talks about the psychology of eating and all these hidden triggers and how to avoid them. It's good stuff. $15. Maybe it will help.
