Ms Elizabeth's Journal, 05 June 2017

Ok it's not a secret and anyone who reads my stuff on here knows I'm slightly obsessive over all things losing weight. I subscribe to fitness blogs, have 10 different apps on my phone, read diet and exercise books, listen to fitness podcasts.. Basically if I obsess then I seem to make progress because I'm too busy obsessing about the macros of a cake to eat the cake.. Ok it doesn't always work with cake but sometimes it does.

In hopes of seeing a weight loss before mid July I'm obsessing. Counting every calorie, workout, oz of water.. and reading everything I can get my hands on. Like the fitnesspal emails on diet and exercise. And then I come across advice that makes me want chuck sporks at someones head and scream WHY?!!?!?!?! because they look like they might be 100 lbs sopping wet.. are probably 12 yrs old.. and should not be giving advice on "Unusual ways to avoid cravings." Seriously... unless you have considered shoving your entire face into a chocolate cake or a pizza then you do not understand cravings.

Tip 1.. Breath: If I breath.. and the craving is right there in front of me. I will smell it. Making me want to have it even more. A more reasonable tip would be hold your breath until you pass out. By the time you wake up you will probably no longer want the craving because your head will hurt where you hit it when you fell.

Tip 2.. Think Logically: If I could think logically would I seriously be considering shoving my entire face into a cake? No. Obviously thinking logically is not a strong skill. Think illogically. Pretend the smelly guy in the office made the cake.. or the kids helped you and didn't wash their hands.. and they just came from the barn. That might help. MAYBE.

Tip 3.. Play a game: Because playing tetris and getting aggravated that the darn bits won't go to where they are supposed to be is going to relax me and no longer crave cake.. or I will chuck my phone so I can use both hands to eat the freakin cake.

Tip 4.. Time your meals strategically: Uhh yeah.. I did that. And then I had a craving and everything went to heck in a handbasket. What does strategic meal plans have to do with wanting to shove an entire candy bar in my mouth at once. I'm not hungry.. it's a craving for petes sake.

Tip 5.. Create nutrition audibles Like a quarterback in a game have an alternative plan when the original plan fails. How does the title of this tip have anything to do with plans? Audible.. audio.. is a plan? This is just too dumb for words. Lets call it.. have an alternative plan. Which would be GREAT. If I was organized and had a plan in the first place.

Tip 6.. Eat the craving daily... WTF?? Seriously W T F?? That's what got me into this situation in the first place!!!!

I got better advice from my bottle of kombucha this morning. "When setting goals, count any movement towards it as a measure of success; even the smallest step." Jonna Templar

Think of your diet like you do physical training. It has to be something you can sustain. It has to be healthy. You have to take scheduled breaks to recover. Weekly and monthly. It has to be long term. It can't like wearing a hair shirt and being stylite.

If you ever find something that works lets us know. I have gone out in -20 degree weather, bundled up in parka, mukluks, scarf, and mitts, warmed up the freezeing cold car for 15 minutes for a two minute drive to the store just because of a ice cream craving.

About 95% of all dieting and exercise advice is utter silliness. I take the little bits I think I can use and ignore the rest. I continue to read all sorts of articles and information, in hopes of gleaning one or two tidbits that might push me forward even that smallest step.

The food deprivation technique will cause "fitness induced BED". Remember that whole cake you wanted to shove your face in? There ya go. I am working through mine. What if I told you that you never have to deprive yourself of any food you want? What if I told you that you can choose to not eat any piece of that cake you talked about and NOT feel like throwing your face into it after you decide to leave it alone? How would you like to have such control over your appetite that you won't need to eat second helpings to feel satisfied? The answer is free. I ain't selling anything and it isn't a pill. Go to YouTube and type in The Mindset for Healthy Eating.

Can I recommend Quell, if you want to be distracted. Download the apps for free on the play store or you pay on Apple. Quell Memento is the first, Quell is second and Quell Reflect is 3rd. Its addictive....... ;)

I think the best advice I've seen is to not keep the cake, icecream, etc. in my house in the first place, or the ingredients (like flour) to make it, either. Family doesn't need (though they may want) sweets, so logically cannot reach for that excuse while in the grocery store. Hmmm... in A Clockwork Orange, they cured the main villain of raping women with hypnosis. Perhaps to cure carb cravings, give that a go (without Beethoven, of course)?

My way of avoiding cravings? -- I developed IBS which means that all the things I tend to crave make me violently ill as in can't leave the house for even the time it takes to walk the dogs ill. And yet, even with these dire consequences, I plan days when I will stay home so I can eat a dish of frozen custard.

St. Francis of Assisi used to eat with the really rich, but always put ashes on his food to remind him not to enjoy it. If saints need help - what chance have we got. I suppose we could put ashes all over cakes, but I think your kids would notice. Mmm Ash icing.

A Zen Master who, while out walking one day, is confronted by a ferocious, man-eating tiger. He slowly backs away from the animal, only to find that he is trapped at the edge of a high cliff; the tiger snarls with hunger, and pursues the Master. His only hope of escape is to suspend himself over the abyss by holding onto a vine that grows at its edge. As the Master dangles from the cliff, two mice – one white and one black – begin to gnaw on the vine he is clutching on. If he climbs back up, the tiger will surely devour him, if he stays then there is the certain death of a long fall onto the jagged rocks. The slender vine begins to give way, and death is imminent. Just then the precariously suspended Zen Master notices a lovely ripe wild strawberry growing along the cliff’s edge. He plucks the succulent berry and pops it into his mouth. He is heard to say: “This lovely strawberry, how sweet it tastes.” We are burdened with guilt about what we did yesterday and terrified of failure tomorrow but fail to enjoy properly what we do today. (not my explanation, I'm not that insightful)

Maybe as he is about to imminently perish it wasn't fair to harm the poor strawberry and he really shouldn't eat and talk at the same time but couldn't the one who is near enough to hear him slay the tiger or throw out a rope?

In a more serious vein, especially since I developed IBS and many of the things I crave now make me terribly sick... I have identified some substitutes that work for me when I get cravings. If I crave ice cream, which I do quite a lot, I either eat Talenti chocolate sorbet, which is not low sugar, but is significantly lower calorie than ice cream OR I take a Chobani coffee yogurt, mix in 1/2 tsp cinnamon-sugar and 1 TBSP of extra dark chocolate chips. This is really delicious. If I crave chocolate cake, I keep in my freezer Gardenlite Chocolate-zucchini-carrot muffins. These are really good and about 140 calories and gluten free. Again -- not low carb, but they satisfy the chocolate cake craving without getting you into too much trouble. You can even put a small spoonful of the sorbet on the chocolate muffin and it's a very close facsimile of cake and ice cream. Before I had all these restrictions on what I could digest, I always had a splurge meal once per week -- usually Saturday nights. I could eat anything I wanted including dessert. I know this doesn't work for everyone, but for me looking forward to that splurge meal was enough to quell the craving.
