~ A Binger & a Bender~

Now, I've written before that even on my "Fatter-day" or "splurge-day" I try to keep my RDI below 2500. I rarely achieve this, but even if I keep it between 2600-2800, I consider it a success. I don't feel bad about "splurge" days. To each their own.

It was several years ago when I took off a lot of weight, that I created a "splurge" day because life is what happens when we're making other plans, and I had been conditioned in a perfectionist society to give up on any path to eating healthy the moment I "slipped". And, of course many of us know that approach to weight management often leads to binging and gluttony. I knew there had to be a way to make my brain realize things like Holidays, Dining out, and Birthday events, festivals, traveling, etc and other unexpected changes or losses were inevitable parts of life. I needed to teach my brain this was "Okay" and even if these events happened and I detoured from a consistent healthy pattern of eating, it wasn't a personal failure but and opportunity to re-assess, re-focus, and adjust when possible and continue on the journey to a healthy lifestyle.

It's essential for me to see this path towards embodying a healthier lifestyle as a continuous journey, even after reaching a goal weight and regardless of age or body shape. Life can throw us everything, but the kitchen sink...and even then...it WILL THROW the kitchen sink. Weight management and a healthier lifestyle are one of many challenges we all face. Its life...

Anyhow, the "Splurge" day forces me to consistently realize this because I'm very purposely and conscientiously 'upsetting' the plan' and very purposely and conscientiously returning to it the next day. It's a weekly reminder that plans can and will be broken, but in the same breath and the very next day, they can be adhered to as well. It also helps with cravings, because if I'm craving something during the rest of the week, I can always say "I'm saving that for my splurge day."

And then....

There's a Binger & a Bender. LOL

That was last night.

A Binger & a Bender not only make you feel like life just threw the kitchen sink at you, but they also make you feel like you swallowed one, too.

And, no I don't recommend anyone that indulges 1 day a week like me make a "binger & a bender" a habitual part of their "fatter-day".

The only redeeming thing about "A Binger & a Bender" is that they tend to intensify one's commitment to their path when they happen. How and why, you ask?

Well, if you don't do them often or haven't in a while, you all know the body feels absolutely horrible the next day. It's enough to say hangovers suck! But, a combination of a food hangover and an alcohol hangover can really perpetuate some misery and make one hug their lo-cal dieting days even harder. At least, my lo-cal dieting/exercising days don't come with a massive headache and temporary but mild distaste for everything. And, they don't turn my face pale and slightly green, either.

And, if you really want to dig in the consequences of a binger/bender day, throw some exercise on top of it the next day! Which, is exactly what I did and even followed through with upping my reps, bike level, and sit ups according to schedule. I credit the makers of NSAIDs and 2 cups of coffee for that feat.

I might say, "never again" but I know better. At the very least, I can definitely say with fervor "NOT FOR A WHILE!" and really mean it with all my heart and hungover soul!

Weigh in is on Sunday, I won't be surprised if there's some gain and I'm not going to blame it on water weight, although imagining water right now feels a lot less unsettling than imagining the Martini I drank last night among other beverages.

Still, it was a fun night. Next week will likely be less challenging, thankfully. My mother and I have tickets to see Alton Brown. My "fatter-day" will be on Wednesday instead of Thursday and dining out will need to be short so we can make the show.

Have a wonderful, healthy weekend everyone!

I love your attitude! I always assume if I have a day that's over RDI that the next few will even it out and they invariably do. But your way sounds alot more fun!

smprowett-I confess it is fun having a 'splurge day'. It allows me those moments to indulge and at the same time leaves room for those fun adventures that might include amazing food, without feeling deprived and yet, still ensures the majority of my time will still be devoted to embodying healthy approaches to eating and weight management. I know that approach is not for everyone, but it works me. And, cheers to you Mrs Maths! Congrats on all your recent weight losses!
