debrafrederick's Journal, 26 June 2016

We woke up to bad news this morning. I had been hunting for one of my cats for the past two days, he missed meal times and he NEVER does that and I have been worried. I was sitting on the porch this AM drinking coffee and when the wind shifted I smelled the odor of something dead, it was coming out from under the steps. We could not get under there to see so we grabbed shovels and dug under them and we found our sweet Yukie. Hubby thinks he might have been bitten by a rattle snake. Many tears for our sweet boy, out of all of our cats he was the most tolerant of other species and always showed an interest in saying Hello to the different wild life that pays our yard a visit. He will be missed by all. I had to call my daughter and tell her the bad news, he was her cat and she had to leave them with me when she moved to Nevada 6 years ago. I hate to hear my daughter cry, at least she got to pay them a visit in February.

Sorry for your loss Debra. I too lost a pet yesterday. My beloved African leaf fish, I had it for 4 years. So sad. I went out out and got 14 new beautiful guppies, I couldn't stand to stare at an empty tank. May they RIP.

It is, he was hubby's favorite too, he "talked" he would come up on the porch and speak to each of us BEFORE he went to eat, so well mannered. My heart is aching and the other two are grieving and want to occupy my lap at the same time.

So sorry Misty! I had fish that I moved around with me for many years and one year we moved to a city that used chloramine in the water supply and it killed all of them. Never could bring myself to replace them.

Went from 5 tanks and a pond outside to one 55g tank and the pond. I had a tank in the basement but only got down there when I did laundry. I felt bad for the big guy so I decided to bring him upstairs had a great set up and dh came in n and said I couldn't put the tank on the stand bc it was unstable. It's a 15g column tank. I emptied it and set it up elsewhere and I think I put too hot of water in there or something he just started dying right away. I tried to save him but couldn't. I blame myself & karma for getting so upset with u know who and lashing out😔

So sorry to hear of your loss and the grim way you had to discover the bad news. Love the first pic you posted. Glad you have happy memories and other kitties to mourn with you.

Misty, just go get another one. We believe the only true way to get over losing a pet is to get another one. So many need homes.

Yes, that is a good picture of him and Texas, we lost Texas in 2012, Yukie howled for a week, Texas was his best buddy, I finally got me another dog last August, we tend to let our grief hold us back from filling the empty holes in our heart right away.

So sorry for your loss. My big orange tom cat (his name is Paul Payne), came up limping about a month ago. One of his front paws was swollen about three times it's normal size. Pretty sure some sort of snake got him, but after a week of sardine therapy I'm happy to report he's back to his normal cantankerous self.

That's a shame. I can't live with cats due to allergies, but I love them and the neighbours cat (in spite of almost dropping a concrete retaining block on him once that likely weighted about 1200 pounds) was my friend and would come to visit me. Rattlers are nasty. A friend of mine and I were out camping at a location called rattlesnake point. It was a beautiful night so we decided to just crawl into our sleeping bags and sleep under the stars. In the morning I was awoken by "Bruce. Bruce. Something's in my bag with me. I think it's a snake." They love the heat of a human body. Personally, I would have just jumped out of my bag and taken my chances. I couldn't believe my friend's self-control. I gently unzipped his bag (from the side away from the opening) and pealed it back. A 4' garter snake (non-poisonous) slithered away. I have a love/hate relationship with snakes. They keep the mouse population down though.

So sorry to hear of your loss... it always amazes me how very different each animal is and those special ones touch our hearts in a way that can never be duplicated. We lost one of our cats this year to a rattlesnake bite as well :-(

I'm so sorry Debra - he looked a gorgeous cat. I also feel sorry for your other cats that are grieving and your daughter too. I have a cat who is 16 years old next month. I know how I would feel if he died. Yukie sounds like he was a very much loved cat. Tears for the poor boy :(

I love snakes just as much as I love cats, I just wish I could get the wild animals to co-exist with us as well as the domestic animals, when we bring a new animal into the family we socialize it with everyone and teach them all to be tolerant and adopt a live and let live attitude. It probably worked too well with Yukie, he would play with the baby rabbits in the garden and hang out with the gopher turtle in the front pasture. The only thing I ever saw him kill was Mocking Birds and they probably had it coming because of the way they harass, scold and tease the unfortunate ground bound critters. His lack of fear and natural curiosity is probably what caused his death. Thank you for all of your kind words and sympathy, he has joined a long line of beloved pets and I am certain that he and Texas are now running through fields and sharing sleeping space under huge shade trees.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Our fur kids are family, and when one leaves us it's just hard. {{{hugs}}}

My heart breaks for you Deb.... our pets are our babies. In fact, I think I loved my old black lab more than I loved my kids at times. She definitely minded me better than they did. I'm glad that you have such great pictures to remember him by...

I had to take pictures of all of them and send them to my daughter on a regular basis, she would even call and have me hold the phone to their ears so she could talk to them for the first couple of years, when she came to visit in February they stuck to her like glue and she was afraid that they would not remember her, not a chance of that. They don't forget the humans they love. We get a wealth of unconditional love from our pets, they don't care what we look like, how we smell, what we drive or how much money we have, they don't even care if you can't afford to feed them every once in a while (we hit some rocky spots when we first moved here) they love us anyway!
