Ok question: and dont judge me for thinking this. Can you really trust a overweight trainer?? Like a trainer at a gym who isn't in shape?? The director of something something at my gym is a trainer and she trains people there but she is not "built" like a trainer and has a beer belly..When i say built I mean, no lean muscle or muscle of any kind and she is pudgy. It makes me uncomfortable to take advise from someone who is overweight. NO OFFENSE TO ANY ONE MEANT. Im just saying, Im fat and I do not want to be fat so why would i let another fat person train me , one who obvi doesn't care enough to lose their own weight.. There are several other trainers at my gym and they look like trainers and i see them working out all the time. Im prolly being old fashion and a real a-hole by thinking this, but it bothersome to the point that I wont take classes she teaches at the gym and that's partly bc of a nasty remark I heard her make one day while I was on the treadmill. Im only mentioning it bc i have a "evaluation" next week to set up some training and they tried to pair me with her and I was like UUUHHH no .. anyone else please. LOL .. (i didn't say that out loud). For the record, I weight 195 lbs and consider myself fat and this post is in no way meant to make fun of anyone's weight. Im posting this bc I feel bad for judging someone I dont even know. Maybe she has legit reasons.. and maybe Im a jerk...

Now you can just say I am the jerk!

Seriously - my ideal coach is always someone who a) is living in my desired future state, and b) walked my path to get there. Compromising = Selling Yourself Short.

Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with it, assuming they are knowledgeable and I get along with them personally. I mean, you don't know her personal life, health or injury history. Also, how many other kinds of coaches are in the same shape as the athletes they train? Have you seen a professional football coach? lol

There could be many reasons why she isn't as fit as you think she should be. I understand what you are saying, but I would go by her knowledge and experience. You can be fit and still be a little overweight. If she trains you well and gives good advice, I would go more by that. There's a woman on the New UK Weight Watchers Magazine and she is a fitness trainer. She doesn't look like some really super fit trainer, but that doesn't mean she isn't a great trainer. I would give it a shot and if it doesn't work out, switch trainers.

I understand your point of view and am guessing I would feel the same way. You have to be confident in the person you are getting advise from and this person doesn't qualify in your mind. The unkind remark would do it for me as well. I would ask for someone else. And I don't think you are a jerk!

I totally agree with Jimmiepop on this one. My very first trainer at 16 had my goal body at the time in she was 40! But god her had an amazing figure. My 2nd trainer I had 3 years ago was short and a little chubby. She did work me out well..but she would not really consider my goals. I also admit it was hard to listen to her advise when she was'nt in my mind a "goal body" or any sort. My current trainer- even though he is a guy. Has a really hot bod. Very hard not to look at him. And hes ripped. I literally want to be girl version of him. So its easy for me to workout with him and look up to him. In return I workout even harder. And we both geek out on fitness/nutrition talks while we train. Its fun. If you are not feeling your current trainer. Find a new one. You are paying for someone to help with YOUR fitness. In the end its your decision

Our instructor for HIIT or circuit training whatever it's called is chubby and pettite at first I was like ok? But I'm glad she's instructing the class and don't mind that I've transitioned and she hasn't bc I guess that's not her goal and if she wasn't teaching there'd be no class lol so I was ok w it but it wasn't a professional class she looks up stuff on YouTube and implements it in our classes. I think she was a former gymnast or something bc she can stretch very well and she can do moves but not for long. But all worked out great I've taken her class for three or four years :-)

Welllll it is always easier to give someone else advice than follow your own..

You need to be working with whomever you feel comfortable with. You don't have to explain yourself or feel bad about how you feel. Hospitals are refusing to hire employees who smoke because they want to promote healthy habits by using the staff as an example... it would be no different in her field. You should want to lead by example for your customers.

@NL Love you, girl, but would respectfully suggest that sports team coaches are not the best analog for a PERSONAL caoch. Would you pay someone to advise you on building wealth who had just filed for bankruptcy?

Again, assuming they were knowledgeable, yes. Lots of different circumstances can lead to someone filing for bankruptcy. Assuming they got there through poor spending habits would be judgmental.

Agreed to disagree.

confirmed. remarkably quiet....

There are some extremely great trainers out there who simply don't practice what they preach because they choose not to. Doesn't make them a bad trainer. just my 2 cents.

i blame society for drilling it in to our heads that the ideal vision of "fit" is someone who is lean, works out a lot and knows a lot of "bro" science. And Im guilty of thinking that IS what someone who is "in shape" should be like. And I know Im wrong but that's the version of fit that I WANT to be.. Im heavy but I work out and watch my diet and Im in "perfect health" according to my dr so Im prolly pretty "fit" already but I want to be lean, muscular and "in shape". SO I guess its a personal preference and bc she doesn't meet my vision/version of what a trainer should look like, Im not able to give her a chance.. It makes me sad that Im so closed minded and Im aware of the fact that I am.. but its a personal choice and Ive decided I cant work out with her.. and as mentioned Ive heard her make nasty remarks and that's just a huge no no for me.. I feel like trainers need to emulate positive vibes when they are at the gym. especially the gym they work at.. my apologies for being so "old fashioned"
