Hi FS Warriors! Well, I never seem to have all of the ingredients for everybody's favorite smoothie recipes, so I adapted, improvised and overcame.

1 Banana
2 Cups chopped kale
½ cup non-fat milk
1 tablespoon flax seed
1 teaspoon honey
1 scoop (39g - came in the container) vanilla flavored whey protein
Approx. 1 cup of ice cubes

It still makes a pretty thick shake. I filled up two large glasses, and put cling-wrap over one and put it back in the refrigerator. Surprisingly, it tastes pretty good. The kale makes it look pretty, but it tastes more like a banana milk shake. So, I guess the bottom line is that it makes two servings, and is probably fairly good for you. I didn't have any trouble drinking it. I may cut back on the whey protein and add some frozen blueberries next time. It's a start anyway. Pretty filling too.

Went to Walmart and Hy-Vee grocery store today mostly for the animals. It costs more to feed them than it does to feed us. Bought some more rose bushes at Walmart. I still have to plant some veggies in the garden. Then plant the roses and the wysteria. The tomato plants all have blossoms on them and are doing well. Will have to figure out some neat juice drink to do with them in a couple months. I love V8 juice, so if I can make something pretty tasty without all the salt, that will be a bonus. Toodles!

Your smoothie sounds much like mine. I almond milk or buttermilk instead of the low fat and no honey, a TBS each of wheat germ and nutritional yeast, no whey protein. You can also add other fruits or greens in . Papaya works nicely or a few ripe strawberries. Tofu could also be added for extra protein. I like mine cold so pop in a few ice cube. A couple hints-- buy marked down bananas (or any fruit) puree them in a mixer and freeze in Dixie cups. Kale either in those bags o pre-sashed cut up or wash and cut your own. POP the bag in the freezer and it will keep for several weeks. Take out what you need, seal and put back in the freezer.

Thanks for posting the Kale smoothie Dairy King. I tried adding spinach once when I was on a restricted diet and doing whatever I could to get nutrients in. It did NOT go down well. I've chalked it up to the idea that I wasn't feeling well at the time. I still haven't been able to face the idea of greens in a smoothie since though. You may be convincing me to give it a go again. Oh..and I agree about the sodium content in V8 but the low sodium versions are so bland. If you're trying to get rid of tomatoes, just send me your address. Each year I become a stalker at the farmers market waiting for the fresh delicious tomatoes. I've been known to have just a huge plate of tomatoes for dinner.

Yes, Vickie, DW has clear instructions to never buy me the low sodium version of V8; I end up putting more salt in it to make it palatable than if I had gotten the regular version to begin with. Some things were not meant to be consumed without salt. But I'm thinking some Roma tomatoes, carrots, celery, beets, spinach, onions, jalapeños and probably salt ought to tickle the tonsils.

Dairy King, have you tried using Mrs. Dash's Table Blend instead of salt? It adds flavor without the sodium, and it's all I use. MH even grew to like it and he used to put salt on everything. (I'm not saying you don't have to get used to using less salt, but this is a very fine grind so it mixes with other foods more easily than some of the other Mrs. Dash blends.)

DairyKing, you're my kind of dining companion. I've learned to forgo salt on quite a few things but I think it may be federal law that tomatoes require it. It's the same section that talks about serving apples or applesauce with pork. It's simply the law of the universe ;-)

Blueberries are great in smoothies, add sweetness and flavor plus full of anti-oxidants. I use frozen ones and they do great.

Yep, salt is a vice I am not prepared to give up yet. DW only buys Morton lite salt: I can't tell the difference, though I cannot tell you whether it is any better for you or not. Update on my kale smoothie: The one I put in the refrigerator overnight with the cling wrap over it. Well, it shrunk in volume by about 75%! I guess it loses all that aeration that you get in the blender. The good news: it tasted the same. It tasted just as good this morning. I look at it as a Shamrock Vanilla Shake. One thing that I noticed about last night's smoothie was that I stayed fuller longer and did not snack before going to bed. A fluke? Who knows; time will tell.

But you do need some sodium. I eat almost no processed foods. Almost 2 years ago my doc knew I'd stop back in her office the day after getting bloodwork done to get a pneumonia shot as they had run out. The staff had orders to grab her when I arrived. My sodium was on the low edge of dangerous. Even thought I was using a bit to season my foods it was not enough. She insisted I eat more salty foods. Actually the night before the blood test I was hungry for salt and bought a smallish 3-4 oz bag of chips (something I rarely eat) Instead of eating just a few I ate the whole bag, she said that may have kept me from having a heart issue from the imbalance. Now I make sure to have regular soy sauce, pickles, or something at least a couple times a week. I often put some nori seaweed in my smoothies

You have so many fun things going on! Smoothies, garden, wysteria. Down here in Georgia its pretty invasive but so pretty. One of my neighbors grooms their vine into a tree that's about 3-4 feet. It looks a little odd in their front yard but really cool when it blooms! Your garden is going to be lovely! Plant some kale when your zone tells you to. It's pretty easy but there are many varieties. Later!
