Hey my Low carb buddies, why does the erythritol show up as so many carbs? I thought it was 0 net carbs? Any thoughts? If its going to be 8 carbs in my coffee that is going to stop lol.

I'm no low carber, but in a quick look on the web I found this: "Erythritol has the best nutritional profile of all the sugar alcohols. It has .02 usable calories per gram. So, in order to make 1 gram of carb, you need to use enough erythritol to make 4 calories. That would be 4 calories divided by .02 calories per gram = 200 grams of erythritol to make one gram of carb. I think it could be considered functionally zero carbs, since you are unlikely to eat 200 grams of erythritol in one sitting."

Looking at nutritional labels on the web, it shows 4 grams carbs for a serving of erythritol. The breakdown is 0 fiber, 0 sugar, 4 erythritol. So I guess they categorize the sugar alcohol as a carb. However there are no calories and everything else I've read says it has no effect on blood sugar, zero on glycemic index, and isn't metabolized by the body. So my opinion, take it for what it's worth, is that it shouldn't effect ketosis unless you eat huge amounts of it, and in that case you'd probably run into digestive issues anyway.

Thanks, I looked it up but couldn't find anything about net carbs. The fatsecret entry must be skewered. While I am not focused on weight loss at the moment I am trying to be mindful so I dont gain any either. My doctor recommended this sweetener but didn't really seem to know much about it(isn't that always the way lol). As a side benefit the mild laxative effect is actually not a bad thing on LCHF.

I rely on Dr. Bernstein's research on all the sugar substitutes.. Erythritol is the sweetener in stevia and in liquid or tablet form is it zero cal and zero carb - but watch out for the powdered form which is "plumped up" with carbs and calories. The proof for me is that the liquid form does not raise BG while the powdered form does. the liquid form is sold as Skinny Girl (at Walmart and Food Lion where I live anyway) and I use it mostly in cooking - works great :-)

FS entry is screwed. Just make a new entry with the proper info and use that one. Sugar alcohols have no carb value. To get net carbs, you substract grams of fiber as well as grams of sugar alcohols from total carbs. The only thing too much sugar alcohols can give you as a side effect is diarrhea, but only if you eat large amounts. I agree with right now or never, beware of the powdered form and read well the label for the "fillers" - that happens with powdered stevia as well. As for your carb intake, I am sorry to be blunt, but looking at your diet calendar, erythritol is the least of your worries.

Yep Dayberndt for sure! I am getting back in the saddle so to speak. A well intentioned trainer said to do 100g of carbs on lifting days but that didn't work for me at all, then my diet went out the window when I got sick. I don't know why I always feel the need to screw with what works, I lost 40 pounds on LCHF.
