Deb_N's Journal, 02 July 2015

Hello, everyone! Hope you are well. I've seen people here at FatSecret who have a really low goal weight, which is unhealthy for them. The metric system is so easy to know how much you should weigh. If you are over 45 years old, and 157 centimeters tall, subtract 100 and you should weigh 57 kilograms. Of course if you have a lot of muscles because you work out a lot, you won't be able to use this guesstimate. Please be kind to yourself and do not set your goal weight below a normal weight for your height. Normal BMI is 18.5 - 24.9 so if you set your goal weight to match a BMI of 17, that is too low! Not only will you be depriving yourself of food which has nutrition to keep you and your brain healthy, but you will be unhappy trying to maintain that unhealthy low BMI. The BMI calculator that a lot of people use is at iifym dot com website: http://iifym.com/bmi-calculator/
A chart that shows the BMI with height and weight for men is here: http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/body-mass-index-bmi-for-adults
Does anyone know of a body mass index chart for women?

That has me at 87kg which is just under 200lbs, current goal is 250 but I've already determined that that is too heavy as well and was looking at 200lbs.. It's a scary thought to weigh less then 200. Not impossible, but sort of that realization that it may actually happen some day.

Thanks, Deb, this assures me that my goal weight is spot on. Wii Fit has my perfect weight 6 pounds lower, but that is too low for me.

so I am 5'3" tall =157 centimeters ....then my goal weight should be 132 lbs or 57 kilo's .... am I right about this...HEP!

I wish I was taller!

Dang, that means doing the math to figure out kilograms. ..LOL

Actually that is not correct. European standards go like this: 110 cm minus for people between 18 and 35. 105 minus for people between 35 y.o. and 45 y.o. Only after the age of 45 you can substract only 100 cm. 24.9 is NOT a healthy BMI, I do not think that trying to find excuses as in "you set your goal weight too low" is constructive in any way. TBH, from a professional's point of view is just a differently worded denial. Also there actually IS an athletic BMI calculator. You can find it here http://www.askdocweb.com/bmi4lean.html?weight=175&htf=5&hti=7&answer=23&comment=Desirable

Thanks, everyone. I enjoy the support and comments. Re-Energize, you got that right! Wholefoodnut, just google the words "convert kilograms to pounds" and type in the kilograms to get the lbs. No math involved. :)

dayberndt, I did not know the - 100 that I wrote in my journal was only for people over age 45. Thank you for explaining that! :)

@dayberndt - I don't think that calculator is very accurate. It says my BMI is 18 (148 lbs @ 5'10'') and I have a pile of fat still on my belly.

A quick note about Google that makes things even easier, in any Google search box just type what you want like "300 pounds in kg". Or if you've got Android, just say 'Ok Google, convert 300 pounds into kilograms'. :D

Well, I should say I still have a pile of fat on my belly. The fat itself isn't very still.

I think its important to remember #'s are just a guide giving us a direction to go. Similar to a map which guides us in a direction that we may be unsure of. It would be unwise to toss our common sense aside & blindly follow a path just because someone else recommended it. I'm positive everyone here means well even when there are differing opinions but *testing the truthfulness* of a belief *before accepting it* is a wise decision no matter how one looks at it :D @ReEnergize I am 5'2" & my ideal target weight is 120. It is not a # that is set in stone.I can change it if *I* want. I researched the #'s for my height, body type, age, etc. & used that as a guide to set me in a direction that others had concluded was the way to go. I urge you to do the same, realizing that once you are on the path using common sense will be a safeguard leading you to YOUR destination. :D Deb, what an interesting thread you have developed here. :D

Interesting info and I have to agree with Deb - every individual is different but these tools provide us with baselines and should not be treated as the only information. We should be forever trying to improve ourselves and learn along this path up the mountain we have taken. There is not just one path on the mountain but many. None are easy. If they were we would not be on the mountain.

llldill - that is the athletic BMI calculator. If you are not an athlete, there is a link on that page for the regular calculator. If you are just going to the gym, you are not an athlete, just a person who works out. Any athletic discipline requires way more than just going to the gym, and there is a different muscle/fat ratio. I looked at your profile and you definitely do not look like an athlete/former athlete. As a former athlete, I can tell you that if you went into athletic disciplines when you were very young, and did that for at least 10 years, you remain with an athletic defined muscle build for a looooong time. I didn't do gymnastics or swimming in 20 years (and I'm talking the athletic type not recreational type) and after all I've been through, now that I'm shedding weight my 6 pack starts showing even if I do no abs work whatsoever. Anyway, just type in google "kg to lbs" or "inches to cm" and you'll get a little box that helps with the conversion. As much as every individual is different, there are still guidelines that apply to everybody in a higher or lower general direction. Otherwise medicine itself wouldn't exist.

Mine says I'm at a healthy BMI for my age, I'm at a healthy weight for my small frame. I am not in shape all the way, I'm better than I was, I still have a puffy midsection, a layer of fat in my back, upper arms (granny wings) that jiggle, and thighs that are not as toned as they should be. My stamina is not yet where it should be. I think BMI is a guideline just like many things. It's when you are fit, toned and at a healthy weight for your sex, age, and body type I think should be the best goal. dayberndt, I'm working on that six pack that I had as a young teen at 65 is just hasn't automatically re-appeared. Maybe its hiding under the fluffy layer. MY GD thinks it's funny I'm trying to match hers. My goal of a bikini by my birthday is put off a year, no way am I going to look good in a bikini in a week..;))
