Riddle Me This

So yoga was great today as it is most of the time when I do it.

I was looking at BMI I am currently at 27 BMI meaning I am overweight at 199lbs and six foot tall. Then if I do Body fat calculations one says I am at 13% and the other one at 15% body fat so I'll go with 15%. The real riddle is why would I need to drop another 16lbs just to conform to what the government or insurance companies say is no longer overweight that would put me at 183 lbs and I just don't see that happening I am a big boned guy.

You can stay this weight if you feel comfortable with it. Continue to eat healthy, exercise and monitor your cholesterol and blood pressure. Not all of us have to look like models.

My husband is right at 200 pounds and 6'1. BMI is crap. He literally has nowhere on his body that is not firm. He'd have to lose a limb to fit into the BMI calculations. I'd rely on the body fat calculations as it is a more accurate measurement of health.

Thank you ladies I too have thought BMI was crap for a long time. I was very perplexed by this and I love the lose a limb comment. Senzica, I know my blood pressure and cholesterol are good I truthfully I only want to drop about 5 more lbs and maintain, i'll be comfortable with that. :)

I 100% agree with the ladies above, I'm very muscular and have dense bone tissue so no matter what, according to the stupid BMI, I will be overweight...I weighed 136 lbs in high school and I was a twig, disgusting looking but per the BMI I should be around 120-140...no thanks...

Remember that BMI is an average measurement. The average individual does not have 15% body fat.... If you had more fat and less muscle you could weigh less and be considered normal per the BMI. Same with bone structure... most do not have large bones so the BMI is an average that is skewed lower due to the larger number of data points with 'normal' bone structure. Bottom line, BMI is crap :) The real test is how do you feel, how do you think you look, how fit are you, and how healthy is your blood work. Everything else is just some average/standard that you can use as a comparison.

I remember a while back in high school, the gym teacher had an electric pulse BMI counter...it sent a pulse through your body back to the machine and was able to calculate your %fat and BMI...I wonder what it was....
