FitOKay's Journal, 24 April 2014

Hello =) I hope everyone has been doing very well.

It didn't take me quite as long as I was going to give myself to get back to feeling like things were a little more reasonable around here. I think I'm going to start tracking food again tomorrow. Not sure if I'm going to weigh in this Sunday or wait until May 4th. Just going to see how tracking adds to things first. Pretty sure I've been staying around maintenance, but haven't been paying a tone of attention to it.

My youngest seems to be doing much better now that the medications have had a chance to kick in. I'm hoping the same can be said for my oldest who had really poor pfts last appointment so his meds were increased. He is harder to tell with though unless he's in an acute flare since his has been under control longer and asthma is one of those things that is just really hard to see from the outside, unless the patient is in having acute symptoms (I've even known people who were diagnosed with panic attacks or anxiety syndrome later to find out it was asthma all along; since, problems getting in oxygen causes most people to experience anxiety or panic.)

My lungs are not doing as well as I had hoped they would this spring. We moved out of the country and into the city 6 months ago hoping that it would remove some of the heavy allergens from our enviroment(like the corn fields that were on 3 sides of us that I'm allergic to). Now, I am doing better then a couple years ago... 2 years ago almost exactly is when we figured out I was allergic to corn and started cutting it out of my diet, it was also the previous spring during which I was put on a relatively new asthma medication called Dulera, which had already help improve my lung function (EDIT I was wrong about the spring I started Dulera- my husband reminded me it was the previous spring and by winter my prednisone use was down remarkably. Then cutting out corn sort of nudged my lungs the rest of the way closer to normal function). The mix of getting rid of as much corn as possible and adding Dulera was amazing to my lung function. 2 years ago this coming summer is when I started noticeably feeling better as far as breathing and oxygen went (and when I started trying to run again... but that's another story). It's kind of crazy to me that it's been that long, sometimes it seems like it's only been months since I was practically chair bound and in the ER every few nights. Other days I feel like it was just a far away bad dream.

I had really high hopes that moving away from the corn fields and country in general would mean good things for my lung function this spring. Unfortunately my peak flows have consistently been below 350 for the past few weeks, which is more then a 20% drop from my winter time mode when I wasn't sick or in a flare. If I really want to feel depressed about it, it's more then a 35% drop from my pre illness peak flow high =p

In short my lungs aren't doing so hot with the spring allergens, I've stopped biking altogether for the moment until I can get my peak flow back up to 400 at least. I learned my lesson during that cold bug this winter when I tried to bike at 350 peak flow lol.

On a positive note my oldest's bday is sneaking up, so I'm having fun planing his party =) Angry Birds Space theme. The kid is bonkers for all things Angry Birds.

Hope everyone else has been having a very nice spring (or autumn if you are down under)!

the deck of cards in life are shuffled and the deuces and aces are not always spread evenly. Some people have more things to cope with then others, and i see you got your share... We are all here to root for you dear! I hope your life finds its rhythm (what the hell kind of spelling is that word!!!) again soon...

Thank you both. Puphine, rhythm has always been one of those words for me too. My oldest likes it because it has no real vowels =p He thinks that's too cool.
