I saw from371to184 post about this yesterday, and i didn't want to chime in and hijack his thread.

So... I am having my first colonoscopy this Thursday at 11. I am basically terrified. Because colon cancer runs in my family and i eat/ate a diet that is conducive to getting cancer anyway, i am scared.

I am going to be 53 in March. I should have done it long ago, but my life was in such chaos, i couldn't deal with one more stressor. But i am finding that my longtime life strategy of ignoring problems and hoping they go away on their own is hit-or-miss at best for results. My friends and sister have all been yelling at me to do this, and they are right. Rm is taking off work to come with me and drive me. He is really a blessing.

I am not psyched about any of it - the drinking of things, the sedation, the doc office, or the procedure itself. I remember when katie couric narrated her own colonoscopy live on today. Lost lots of family and friends (and my beloved dog) to cancer, and hospitals and doctors skeeve me out.

I am a little confused about how to eat low fiber. I am meeting a friend for lunch on Monday, and i wanted their killer avo cobb salad! I guess fruits, veggies, beans and nuts have become integral to my woe. I may just try to fast for longer.

I am hoping for the best, but mad at myself for the way i handled this (or didn't). I had a small health scare in May, and during it i was thinking how i really do want the chance to show myself that i can take charge of my mind and body, and that i can buckle down and change my life.

Anyway, it is on my mind.

Once you get through the preparation of drinking all that prep solution and getting VERY cozy with your bathroom toilet the worst part is over.

google low fiber diet for colonoscopy and it should come up with info for you. The prep is the worst part. The actual procedure you will never remember.

I be praying for you through your colonoscopy Thursday. I am had 61 and had my first one last year. I am happy I went. I put it off for years. Anyway, they found 10 polyps and removed them...All benign. Think positive! Hang in there. As for your diet, Congrats on losing the weight. That is awesome!!!!!

Hey there! This waiting part is the hardest. I'm sure you'll do great! It will soon be over and you'll be breathing a sigh of relief. In the meanwhile, oatmeal should keep your colon healthy. Good luck!

I have a upper and lower GI done every 4 months. Not fun but necessary. Hang in there and don't stress untill you have a good reason to.

If your poop floats to the top, see your Dr. Normal poop sinks to the bottom of the bowl.

I totally understand your fears. My colonoscopy was way overdue because of the same fears (my aunt died from colon cancer before she was 50). The prep was a bit tricky for me because I had just gotten into the habit of INCREASING my fiber intake while DECREASING my refined carbs and everything on the list were thing I was trying to avoid! I'll share my food diary from my prep and a probably TMI: Day one and two was pretty much scrambled eggs, turkey breast, mashed potatoes, canned green beans, canned peaches cheese, creamy peanut butter, yogurt, ground turkey. Day 3 was clear liquid day with apple cider, bone broth, lime jello, and then the GoLytley that was prescribed. The entry from that "snack" made me laugh "chicken broth, lime jello, 3 liters evac potion - not really a snack... more an anti-snack" Day 4 was breakfast of apple juice then just water until 3 hours before the procedure (it was in the afternoon). The worst thing about it all was the very unfamiliar sensation of peeing out of my butt. I was so paranoid that I wore Depends the entire time. It was completely unnecessary, but it was an extra level of security in the face of the unknown. Sounds like you will be starting your prep soon. We're here for you!

It's a great idea that you are getting it done in the first place. I can see why you would be scared. I've never had one, but they are in my future. I'm sure that it will be over before you know it. Stay strong and good luck.

No perceived slights taken... you're good with me. Anxiety has a way of driving the train for even these routine procedures. We'll both get through it.

I too was absolutely terrified to have my colonoscopy done, even though I am pretty healthy. It was just the thought of being put to sleep. But I can promise you it was so easy and really fast. I don’t know how I forced myself to calm down long enough for the super friendly nurse to say “night night” and then I was waking up. Not groggy and just happy it was over.

My uncle died from colon cancer and my sister was diagnosed stage 3 at age 39. So my doctor has me get a colonoscopy once every 5 years. The first one scared me too, but I now know that the prep is the worse part of the procedure and the peace of mind of getting checked is priceless. Catch the polyps early, have them removed, and you will do great. I hope you have great results.

Best wishes! I’m getting to that age where I’ll need that type of stuff done but I also like to just ignore stuff and hope it goes away... definitely doesn’t work though

The prep is worse than the colonoscopy.

Hubby said he didn’t remember anything after he left the patient waiting area until after we got home. While he was loopy he asked when they were going to ‘come probe my a$$’ lol. I highly recommend not having anyone around you that you don’t want to be completely honest with. You won’t remember what they ask and your responses for a few hours after ;). Oh and there’s gas... lots of gas! They want you to get it out though so they know things are moving correctly I guess. He had to drink the stuff before and I had to for my hysterectomy. We both agree that part was NOT fun! Be sure to tell them about your woe. They had a list for hubby about two weeks before. I can’t remember what all was on it and when he had to start avoiding those foods/activities and whatever else was on there. Try not to worry too much. From my experience with all my surgeries and health issues, worrying tends to make matters worse. And whatever your mind comes up with usually doesn’t happen ;). That being said I’m still a worrier 😳😖
