I have struggled with an under active thyroid for most of my adult life. I had my thyroid removed in May 2011. Because of this I also struggle with very quick weight gain, even though I am on a bmi lower than 18.5 most of the time - which is classified as underweight. I can easily gain 6 kg in 10 days if I am not focusing on what I eat on a daily basis.
I am able to keep my focus when I weigh myself first thing every day and TRACK MY FOOD INTAKE ON FATSECRET every day!
I have been able to maintain my weight within 5 kg's from my 18th birthday (at 52 kg) by refusing to buy bigger clothing - even after having 2 children.
Proper eating is a mindset and a life style and not something you only do when you feel like it.
