Help! I don't know what I'm doing wrong!

First of all, let me start of by saying that I've been on Atkin's Induction for a little over four weeks now. I've been sticking to it religiously. For a while I was in deep Ketosis, which told me I was doing everything right. I was staying away from starches, almost all carbs except from green veggies, cheese, and cream, and occassionally nuts. Some nights I'd have a couple of shots worth of vodka or spirits which has no carbs, and kept clear of the fridge (my calorie intake was regulated very well). I also use Co Q 10 and an Omega 3-6-9 supplement for my fats every morning. I never used sugar, so everything was going good....

Until this week.

My keto-stixs stopped reading any ketones in my urine this morning. It actually started reducing two days ago, which was worrying me, so I even cut out cream from my diet. My body was fine with coffee, diet red bull, and diet soda, so I don't think they are the culprits. I've lost my appetite for the most part however. This has been ongoing since the end of the first week.

See, I work on a road crew as a flagger, so I'm standing or walking ten hours a day, with some plenty of activity. I don't snack except for a cheek full of sunflower seeds to keep me from chewing. I've accounted for those carbs in my diet, and a small .59 bag lasts three days. I also drink fluids, probably not as much as I should (diet powerade and water). My lunch is small, a couple of cheese sticks (which I usually only eat one), and a meat of some sort or Atkin's shake or a couple of eggs. If I get hungry at all I may have a small handful of almonds, but it's not often.

Well, along with the disappearance of the Ketones, I put on three pounds since yesterday. I'm assuming it's water weight, since my new bag of seeds had extra salt from what I could taste. But I've been around 156.1 for several days when I weigh myself, except for this morning which was 159 lbs.

I'm really stumped. I'm trying to push past the seemingly slow weight loss (I started at 164 lbs). The loss of eight pounds really motivated me but with the loss of the ketones from my urine, I'm not sure if I'm no longer in it, or just Ketoadapted. My appetite is still tiny (I tried to eat two small cans of tuna and olive oil mayo, and couldn't finish my breakfast.) I honestly can't tell if I've lost inches since I have body dimorphic disorder, but one pair of pants fits loosely, and my other pairs are no longer tight.

Has this happened to anyone else on here? What can I do to check if I'm still in Ketosis?

You sound like you are doing most things right. You will probably have to cut out the diet red bull, diet sodas and diet powerade. I am sure the vodka is putting a hold on weight loss also. Your body is going to burn the alcohol off first before it works on taking off fat from the body. Try a week without these drinks and just stick to 64 oz. of water and see what happens. Induction does not involve these drinks. Let me know how if goes.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you've missed some of the keys to Induction. While both cheese (2-4oz) and cream (1-3tbsp) are allowed, they are User Beware items. Some people tolerate better than others. Nuts, are not an induction item. Neither is Alcohol. It will in fact halt the fat burning process until everything has finished being filtered out of the liver. Then it can take 2-14 days to get back to Fat Burning again. The sunflower seeds are not on the induction list either, and while I understand your use of them - the sodium from them are doing a number on you I am sure. The diet sodas (or artificial ingredients of any kind) are very difficult for the body while eating low carb. Again, some can tolerate one here and there...others not so much. You will have to eliminate each of those and then add back one at a time - slowly - for one week each - to determine which thing is giving you a problem. Meanwhile, Stick w/ whole foods, proteins and veggies, and healthy fats... shoot to track your foods here if you can. Roughly 65-70% fats, 25% proteins, 5% carbs. Drink 1/2 your body weight in water ounces DAILY. And then report back in how things are going.

You will need to do this for the next full two weeks, to see if eliminating the above, makes an improvement in your Induction results.
Live, Love, Laugh ...make each day memorable and enjoy the journey.

Are you getting 12-15 net carbs from veggies? Alcohol is a no-no during induction as are nuts, but since you are two weeks past the initial induction phase, nut would be OK. Have you done the lessons at atkins dot com? Or read the newest book New Atkins for New You? Eating more protein than what your body needs only leads to gluconeogenesis and more stored fat. There is a chart in NANY as to how much protein you need according to your height. The use of ketostixs is no longer recommended in NANY. They measure spilled ketones into urine which can be affected by whether or not you are dehydrated. If you follow the 20 net carbs with 12-15 nc from veggies, you will be in ketosis. Then after two weeks move onto OWL and begin to up your carbs to find your carb level for losing. Most people fail doing atkins because they do not successfully move through all 4 phases.

Well it looks like you are staying true to the diet maybe it will just take time, I was on Atkins when I was younger and lost about 30 pounds in a month and a half, but that was then now I'm quite a bit older and I concentrate on vegetables and fruits. I like to have regular bowl movements and maybe as you get older you don't need that much animal protein. Hang in there you have lost quite a bit of weight in a short time compared to 5 pounds a month like slow dieting.
