Hello, I have been on induction of the atkins diet for almost 4 weeks adn have lost only 7 lbs. I am not eating any whites what so ever. I log all my foods adn eat between 1000-1200 calories a day. I have been eating atkins bars (which I will stop and see if helps) I am also trying to stop diet pops. Any suggestions. I use myfitnesspal to log foods. I cannot tell amt of carbs from veggies.

The only real suggestion I can offer you is to read the labels. Serving size is so important a small can of asparagus that only has 3 g of total carbohydrates and 1 g of dietary fiber giving you two net carbohydrates until you realize that there are three servings per container. I have been doing Atkins now for almost one year I started off weighing 338 pounds and I am currently tipping the scale at 226 just as a point of reference. I never worried about calories but I religiously stayed under the 20 carbohydrates didn't really exercise hope that helps if not please feel free to contact me directly for inspiration or moral support

Two years ago my mom and I went on Atkins together. We ate the exact same food and she lost 3 times as much weight as I did. I had to cut out soda, Atkins bars, and start adding olive oil to my veggies to begin to see results. I can't remember if it is in the new Atkins book or not, but I know there was a section in one of the older books that talked about people who were *resistant* Without seeing your food it is tough to say what the slow down is, but I will say that some people are more sensitive to sugar. Could there be *hidden* sugars that you are not aware of? A lot of mayonnaise, salad dressings, condiments, and even prepared meats have sugar. Personally, I have to eat almost completely *natural* to lose weight on Atkins. Good luck!

It's so weird that you can eat something that according to Atkins should be okay I love potato chips but replace them with pork rinds as a had zero carbohydrates even though I remain under 2000 cal not strictly watching that when I eat pork rinds I don't seem to lose weight as quickly no problem with Coke zero

I have read the latest two Atkins books cover to cover and in both they talk about how the bars and shakes can slow weight loss. I try to only eat them when I am really craving something sweet and nothing else seems to work.

It's hard to give you any specific advice without seeing the actual foods, but I'd say that 7 pounds in 4 weeks is still a good loss. Sometimes it takes a bit for the body to adjust to low carb. A somewhat lower-than-expected loss can also be due to having been on some other diet prior to beginning Atkins (a lot of the initial weight loss on Atkins comes from water, so if you've been on another diet, that water may already have been shed).

Be sure you're following the plan, as laid out in the book or the Atkins website. I've seen too many folks do what they believe to be Atkins and it's a far cry from it! Atkins is not low calorie or low fat. It's important to eat the right foods, even if they're low-carb, to keep your metabolism fueled for weight loss. Be sure to stay at/about 20 net carbs with 12-15 of those coming from foundation veggies. The net carb counts of various veggies can be found on lists in the book or over on the Atkins website.

And, I agree with Katekat....ditch the Atkins bars (and any other low-carb bars/candies/treats) for now. Once you're moving steadily downward and have the hang of this WOE, you can carefully try one every now and then to see how your body reacts to them. Hang in there....Atkins does work.

My weight loss stalled after the first 2-3 weeks. This week I quit aspartame (diet soda) cold turkey, as well as Atkins bars and other artificial sweeteners. The scale has started moving again.

Also, are you getting enough fat? If you are eating too much protein in place of carbs, your body may actually start to metabolize it into glucose, impeding the effects of ketosis.

I also find it really good to log in your food on a daily basis. This is a real eye opener to what you are truly consuming. Definitely do not eat any processed foods including the Atkins bars and shakes that they say are okay for induction. they stall so many , but keep Atkins in business!

Why are you guys against protein bars (atkins is a type of protein bar at GNC) ? I can not get enough calories in a day, because according to my research my BMR is 1800 and i should be eating minimum 2500 cals/day. Since i can not seem to get that much in normal lunch/dinner, i eat some protein shakes and protein bars, during the course of the day. It is easy to carry and does not have as much junk as french fries. Maybe i am missing something (other than the fact that they have sugar). ??

Make sure you are drinking enough water.

Make sure you are tracking the net carbs properly.

There are a number of reasons why weight does not come off. Over the counter medications such as NSAIDS cause water retention and block fat burning. Prescribed medications such as hormone replacement, beta blockers, some diuretics, steroids, insulin and insulin stimulating drugs, antidepressants, and steroids such as prednisone can interfere with weight loss.

More than three packets per day of artificial sweeteners can inhibit weight loss. Along with that the bars and shakes and diet pop could be an issue that you already are addressing.

Double check to see if you are eating the correct amount of protein for your body size. In the last book there is a chart that has an indicator for body height for both men and women. Refer to that to be sure.

Make sure you are eating enough fat.

Maybe you are not eating enough and your body has decided it is in starvation mode so won't give up the weight. It is recommended that women take in "1500 to 1800 calories" per day...page 107

Maybe you did not have alot of water retention at first and your body isn't showing the same loss as say the lady down the block who had a severe case of water retention before she started Atkins.

Every body is different and sometimes yours may need more time to adjust.

Stress will inhibit weight loss.

You couldbe metabolically resistant to weight loss andit is just going to take longer.

These are all things that I have read in the New Atkins For A New You.

Good luck.

If you really needed to lose weight and were on the Atkins Diet you would probably be referring to some of the Atkins books. There is a reference to bars on page 108 of "The New Atkins For A New You" which states that if one is consuming more than one or 2 bars or shakes per day that it could be a contributing factor in slow or no weight loss.

I have nothing against these bars, except that there is something in them that makes me breakout in a rash! The predominant sweetener that is in them isn't sugar. They are primarily sweetened with malitol, sucralose, and polydextrose. The point everyone is trying to make is that if too many are eaten the Limit of 12 to 15 net carbs for the Induction Phase would be exceeded, which is detrimental to weight loss on the Atkins Diet.

Hi! I was so inspired by your entry that I had to sign up so I could post this! Please find the strength to give up Diet Pop! It was the first thing in January when I started this program, and the results have been amazing! Some people (such as myself) are unable to process all of the chemical additives in diet pop,and as a result they actually gain weight from it! In dec I was weighing in at 305! I gave up everything white, and I am currently at 270. I have a ways to go, but wanted to reach out to you. Stay strong!

My advise is to stick to it. I restarted Atkins last year after major surgur very. I followed it 100% for weeks. For the first few weeks my weight did not move. I thought it may have been the meds that I was taking. So I asked others on the forums if they had the same challenge. What I did notice was that although my weight did not move much in the first four weeks my clothes were fitting better and I could see visible changes. So even though the pounds may not be falling off there are probably some other positive changes that you may not have noticed. Such as a loss of inches. Surprisingly on the week I decided to move to Ongoing Weight Loss OWL I lost the most weight. Keep trying. Atkins is one of the diets that I found works the best for me and the Alternate Day Diet for when I need variety. Eating healthy can be a struggle but the rewards are worth it. If you would like to track my progress check out my Profile from when I began. I've recorded all for my good and bad days since I started on Fatsecret in July 2012. Hope seeing my successes and struggles will help you.Smile
