Am doing Atkins, bee in since this past Monday. Heard about checking my urine to see if I'm I ketosis (fat burning mode if I read correctly). I bought Keto-Diastix. On the box it says for Ketone testing. Please tell me I bought the correct strips and please tell me about the colors? Directions aren't really clear to me. Is it the darker the color the more in "fat burn mode" my body is in??

Again, thanks in advance!!

Yes. You bought the correct thing. You pass it through your urine, wait 15 seconds and check the color against the chart on the bottle. As far as the color, it is really irrelevant what shade it is because you are either in ketosis (burning fat) or you aren't. I always thought the darker color meant I was burning "more fat" but, that isn't necessarily true. It could also mean, you aren't getting enough water. I was in the moderate to large range for well over a week and lost about a pound and a half that week. This week, I am in the small to moderate range and have lost about 5 lbs this week. I'm drinking a LOT more water and I think that makes a difference. So, don't be overly concerned about the color, ANY change in color means you are on the right track!! Hope this helps! Wink

Thank u. I just tested and it showed only a trace. I have been on Atkins since this past Monday and would think I was in more of fat burn mode. I have been following it to the "T". Now I'm not sure why its just barely a trace. Even more water????? Any suggestions???

Hi, just joined fatsecret today and I started Adkins induction on Tuesday. Never heard of those strips to test keytones. Thanks so much for mentioning it, will pick some up. I weighed myself after the second day, which was Thursday and I was down 3.8!! WOW I couldn't believe it. Hope I didn't jinkz it!! The Adkins site is horrible for tracking meals. So far this one is going much better.

If you are in ketosis, you are in "fat burn mode". There really is no "more or less". I don't know what you do to make the color darker, I just know mine has been... just as it has been in the lighter shades. As long as you are following the plan correctly and you are in ketosis, you ARE burning fat. At what rate, I don't really know, it depends on your resistance level. That is determined at the end of the 2 week Induction period.

A couple of things I think are important is...

Make sure you are not using "low fat" products (because they actually work against you on this plan). Make sure you are eating your vegetables, drinking your water and when having protein... make sure you have it with a "fat".

I looked at your diet calendar and it looks like you are doing great. The only thing I would tell you to consider doing is... not having the Atkins Bars.

I'm not sure why they recommend using those, especially in the Induction phase of Atkins, when they are well known to cause stalls. But, that's just my opinion. I'm not a dcotor or a dietician so... who am I to say?

The only reason I do say that is because, I've read over and over again (here and elsewhere) people complain about not being able to lose as much as they think they should be losing and they are having the Atkins products as a "staple" in their diet. Sometimes 3 or more a day. Shock I don't think that's what they are intended for. I just think stuff like that is meant for the times when you just have to have something or you have no other choice in the matter. It's better than eating something COMPLETELY "off plan". Again though, that's just my personal opinion on the matter.

If they aren't causing you to stall or hindering your weight loss... I would have them if I wanted them. Very Happy I guess what I'm trying to say is... I'm just not sure how one would "know" if they were causing a problem or not if they've never done Indcution without them. Hope that made sense! Confused

Anyway, back to the color on the test strips...

If I were you, I seriously wouldn't stress over the color on the strips. Anything trace and above is ketosis. Wink

L2, thanks for the input. I was tracking all of my food on the Atkins site, not the best for food tracking. Had the bar because I knew I was going to be out and about. I am trying to stay away from them. I plan pretty good during the week, weekends are a bit hectic and not my usual "9-5". Am working on that, lol. Thanks for the input, will continue to test and hope for discoloration!!! 😄

Hope for discoloration! Laughing

I was hoping you wouldn't take that the wrong way about the Atkins bars and I'm glad you didn't!

Good luck to you!! Very Happy

The ketostixs are no longer recommended because they are not very accurate. Ketostixs were developed for Type 1 diabetics to check for ketoacidosis. Check out the message boards at http://boards.atkins.com/showthread.php?111441-Does-anyone-use-Ketostix-these-days&highlight=keto+sticks. Collette H., the nutritionist for Atkins, wrote, "Remember the ketones that show up in the urine are the extra ketones you did not use for energy. On a day that you are exercising or are more active, the less ketones you may show. The longer you stay on the program, the more efficient the body becomes at using ketones as well. So they may not spill over into the urine. That's why some people find the bad breath that occurs from discharging ketones, goes away after the first few weeks."

Something that also affects ketones in the urine is the amount of water you drink. If you are properly hydrated then the ketone level will show lighter, whereas, if you are dehydrated, the color on the stick will be deeper.
