Best time for doing exercise, morning or night?

It's common to hear about getting workout done in the morning, before anything else, but it has always been the hardest time for me to get up and get it done.

I personally mostly do my exercise late at night. I have a protein shake take a shower, may stay up two more hours and that's it.

Anybody want to share some thoughts on what is the best time to achieve optimum results?

I also workout late at night. I never have adequate energy to workout in the morning. I think the best time to workout is the time that you can put your best effort into it.
Pain is a by-product of a good time.

You have to fit it in when it suits you most. I do mine first thing in the morning as that's when it suits me, if i don't then i feel pants for the rest of the day. I don't have the same enthusiasm for it doing it late in the day

I have to agree that the best time to exercise is when you personally feel most energetic, most motivated & can consistently fit it into your life. For me, that's in the morning as I'm such a morning person (here I am at 6 am!), & have the flexibility in my schedule to exercise most mornings.

I prefer evening to exercise as it can be done with out time constraints able to exercise longer and with more intensity.

Evening workouts are the best time to work out for optimal weight loss if done on a consistent basis.

For me, it's MUCH preferred to go early in the morning. I prefer to workout before I go to work on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Then I kick in something fairly early - when convenient - on Sunday. One of the main perks of working out for me is the feeling of accomplishment throughout the day. Why wait to get that feeling until the evening? Smile

I want every minute of sleep I possibley can. I wait till I get home from work but have to do it right away cause if I sit down I'm a goner. Weekends it's when I get to it.

Whatever works for you. Play with it. When I used to do a lot of very strenuous exercise in the evening, it could keep me up at night. But that was beyond running.

Morning for me. I like getting it done and not dreading it all day. There are mornings I sleep in and miss by the time my kids are up, then I just find I have this heavy burden until I get it done. Whenever you do it is best just as everyone has said, just so you know though, it doesn't take long for your body to get used to getting up. It only takes two or three days of resisting the snooze button, before you are on a morning schedule. This WebMD article makes some good points. Good luck to everyone!

I'm new to this but I have found it best to exercise when you have the most energy. For me its in the afternoon. I can exercise longer when I feel better.

We are going to Challenge ourselves to remain FOCUSED and COMMITTED to our set goals! These are mine for 10 weeks:

interesting debate and the common consensus is do it when you will DO IT so consistency and regularity is the main thing..

However i read an interesting Article with Sir Chris Hoy (6x Gold medallist cyclist) who said that he thought mornings were the best as Testosterone levels were highest and that when you wake up your spine is at its most elongated and then compreses during the day, therefore he felt that exercising in the mornings was less likely to cause injury esp to the back and it was easier to maintain good exercise form

I think morning is best time for doing exercise because it keep us fresh for whole day and also give energy for working effectively.

The only right answer is when will you do it consistently? For me that's morning because the only excuse not to is in my head.. Like cjmurph said in a previous post "If I sit down I am a goner". I know if I did them in the afternoon I would have the same issue along with kids, yard work, hanging with the neighbors and the list goes on. In the morning, it's just you and no excuses.. That's what works for me but by no means is the "right" answer..

I prefer the morning because when I get home after work I am way too tired. Plus i feel it helps give my day a boost.

i too have started exercising in the morning. it stops me thinking about it like its a chore that needs doing. also with 3 young boys in the house anything can change throughout the day and your plans can easily get scrapped.

I get up at 04:00 then run for 60-80 mins on Weekdays. I take my Saturdays and SUndays for resting...though it is hard not to go running. I started 5 months ago, could barely handle a walk, but going out in the early morning did it for me. Now I manage 9 - 12 Kms a day. I dropped from 229 lb to 169 -a whopping 60 lbs! Smile

I like the evenings after dinner. I use to run at night but it is really not that safe anymore. My husband and I bought an elliptical machine and put it in our family room right next to our recliners. We take turns on it while watching our shows on DVR. We can also talk and catch up with each other while working out. Now I taken to doing weight training and yoga in front of the TV too so now we are not couch potatoes. LOL

I like to exercise right after lunch and right after dinner. I usually break up my workout because my 3 year old has a short attention span. I find if you are exercising you are making that step to a healthier you, so does it really matter when during the day we do it as long as we do?
Tomorrow is fresh with no mistakes in it.

I have a desk job as well, I input that exercise and then I turn my pedometer on my phone after work when I do my normal walk. I think I will turn it on tomorrow and see how many steps during the day ...
