Steel cut oats

I am eating steel cut oatmeal for the first time this morning. I looked at the package of my regular style and this package, I cant really find the difference in nutritionally value. What is the better difference? Why are these better than the others? Also, I need the best way to cook them. 10 minutes in the microwave was too long and I am still not sure if they are finished. Anyone with suggestions? Please advise me. Thank you.

When I make them I do it at night. Bring 4 cups of water to boil. Add one cup oats. stir. cover. turn off stove and let it sit over night. In the morning they are ready to go. I add cinnimon and a little brown sugar and reheat in microwave. Put the rest in the frig.

There's not any nutritional difference between steel cut and rolled oats that will matter in practical terms. Rolled oats are basically just steel cut oats, pressed flat. This gives steel cut oats a slightly different texture and nuttier flavor, and makes them take longer to cook. But the nutritional difference is essentially nil.

I love steel cut oats but, my sister gave me 2 large containers of quick cooking oats, so I'm using those and, when they're gone I'll go back to still cut. I think steel cut has more fiber. I cook 1 cup SC Oates to 3 cups water and watch them closely and stir often. I don't add salt. I will try some of the suggestion above. My mother started me to adding peanut butter, now that's the way I eat them.

I like adding a scoop of protein powder. I have frozen wild blueberries/strawberries,raspberries and a bag of berry mix to choose from to add as well.
I had a bowl of steel cut oats with 1 scoop of strawberry protein powder a handful of sliced strawberries this morning for breakfast. So yummy and healthy and keeps me feeling full a long time.

I make baked steel cut oats with cranberries and apples - super yummy!! I put this dish in 2 pans because it made so much. I cut it up and freeze individual servings, then just microwave in the morning.

I think the only noticeable difference is that steel oats is less processed. I used to eat quick oats and noticed i would get hungry faster compared to steel oats. I'm not really an oatmeal person but its good with almond butter & cook it with almond milk not water

that would be a healthy addition to my oats. Cthulhu even though you cook them longer they won't look or taste like quick oats, you either lovem or hatem. I love oatmeal and it even lowered my cholesterol. I was told to eat it for 3 months and it would lower it about 30 points, my friend and cousin both did that. Also drinking dry red wine (4oz) every night is supposed to raise LDL (good) cholesterol . My husband is doing that now a suggestion from his doctor. I hope everyone had a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

Old fashioned oats are thicker and chewier than quick oats. Even when you cook them longer. I don't really care for them, except for when baking (like oatmeal cookies).
