Hello people. My husband and I have spent weeks researching HCG before deciding it was worth trying for me to get past the final 15-20 pounds I want to lose. I began injections yesterday and admit that it certainly helped my hunger in the evening which is generally when I have issues. I cannot, will not discontinue working out so I am going to try to stay at or under 1000 calories a day and continue my Insanity/running work outs. I may lose more slowly than those on the 500 calorie "diet" BUT I am hoping it will be easier to maintain as I believe in making life style changes, not dieting. Any thoughts or personal experience with HCG?

Decades of controlled trials have found no data to substantiate any of the claims offered by those selling HCG products and protocols for purposes of losing body fat.

It's an expensive placebo.

Hi Nimm...It actually was not expensive at all. My husband is over seas and gets it from the pharmacy for the equivalent of $18 US...As for being a placebo, you may be right but if it is and tricking ones brain into believing they can push through works then I am willing to try it. Those same studies couldn't prove it DID NOT work or that it was dangerous/harmful to the body so Im giving it a shot.

That depends on your definition of "did not work." The placebo effect is, as you point out, not illusory. In that sense, HCG can "work." However, the research is unanimous - the mechanistic claims by its proponents are in fact false. In that sense, the studies are quite clear that it does not "work."

Nonetheless, if you don't mind the expense, there's no evidence that the injection is hazardous. And it's a good idea to be consuming 1000 calories/day rather than just the 500. I encourage you to consider increasing the amount further.

hi folks. i just finished with HCG drops myself (went through 4 courses over the last 8 months). I personally had good results, dropping a total of 58 pounds. the 500 calorie a day diet wasn't easy and i had my share of cheats. As long as you measure out your portions and prepare them in advance, it's pretty easy to maintain the diet. Men have it a bit easier than women doing the weight loss from what i've read. The main thing on the hcg diet is the near elimination of wheat, gluten and dairy from your diet - a common thing you'll see on many celiac disorder and IBS disorder diets. with these items eliminated, you'll see more weight come off even without the hcg. i found now by changing my diet and lifestyle to go without these foods (as much as possible) that i don't miss them terribly and I can keep on track.

Where overseas is your husband getting your HCG injections? Depending on the country, they may not have safety checks, quality controls and labeling requirements like North American countries have. Therefore, you have no way of knowing what is actually in those injections. That right there sounds to sketchy. Please make sure thats coming from a truly reputable source.

I've been on HCG for 6 months, and I've lost 52 lbs. I don't exactly follow the original protocol, I usually have more like 750 calories a day, and only one fruit a day. I add a protein smoothy each morning. I also don't take breaks every six weeks. And to really make everyone crazy, I order it online from an Indian pharmacy, and it is 100% pure. If you are starving and weak while on it, that's when you need to check the quality, because it is most likely not pure.
I feel better than i have in years, my LDL cholesterol went down 37 points, I'm requiring less and less thyroid meds, and I'm just not hungry unless it's meal time. It's the only way I lose weight without being beside myself with hunger, and I'm so thankful I found it. I normally believe in science, but there is something there that they just aren't finding, because I KNOW it is more than a placebo for me.

Ok, I would like to weigh in too... I believe that healthy food choices and good old fashioned exercise is the way to lose weight. I have lost 40 pounds in six months without any drugs and I feel great about my accomplishment. I have made a lifestyle change for better health.

This is not a long term healthy way to lose weight. I caution against it. It really seems as though the weight loss comes from the extreme calorie defecit and HCG is only the "appetite supressant". How will you maintain this long term? Even 1,000 calories is low (especially if you are doing insanity/working out), and unhealthy. We all dip below our RDI once in a while, but trying to maintain that type of calorie defecit long term is not realistic. You said you do not believe in "diets", but that is exactly what this is...a fad diet scam. You should eat healthy balanced meals, and exercise to lose weight slowly and naturally. It may take longer, but it lasts longer too. Good luck.

Ive lost 80+ pounds in a year. Eating healthy and working out. The End. There is no magic cure, no potion, lotion, drop, shot or shake that will keep you healthy and help you stay that way. Ive maintained my loss for 6 months and have decided I can loose 10 more lbs if I push myself. Hard work pays off. Dont rob yourself of the satisfaction of doing it the " hard" way. Its the only way that works.

This article might answer some of your questions of why you are not losing weight when restricting your calorie intake below 1000 for an extended period of time........

All I can say, is that if you cheat to loose weight without changing your lifestyle, the weight will just come right back.

This isn't intended to be a criticism of the proponents of HCG, but just something to consider...

I asked my endocrinologist about HCG a few months ago because a friend started injections through her doctor. The answer was there are NO shortcuts or magic pills. As informative as Googling may be, rely on input from your primary care physician... it's worth the consult.

I used to be able to lose weight by restricting calories and exercising, but wow, once I hit 50, I lose so slowly that it just gets too discouraging. I don't think anyone could maintain the 500/cal day for long term, so I've adapted the eating to what works for me. Just to clarify, hcg is not an appetite suppressant in the sense that is affects your brain. And there is NOTHING easy about what I'm doing, this is very hard. I have completely made that change in lifestyle, eating lean protein and veggies and restricting fruit, but having a little each day. Somedays, I add some extra healthy fat. This has been a lifetime change for me, not magic.

Again. I am not challenging proponents of HCG - but I am 57 years old and have hypothyroid disease for which I take medicine..and still have lost over 50 pounds in about five months through exercise and calorie reduction. Go figure...
