I am new to this site, but the food journal is good. I am very nervous about the 4th of July, we are having a BBQ on Saturday and I am doing Atkins. I don't want to blow it, I have been perfect on my eating plan for 3 weeks.

Oh yeah, I have 200 pounds to loose and this is the 1st time, at age 52, that I am really making an effort.

I am 53 and have been overweight my whole life. I have been on program for 2 months and have lost 20 lbs. Only need to loose another 60!! You can do this!!! Make Atkins friendly side dishes, and let someone else bring the dreaded potato salad. True friends will understand. Stay Strong!!!

The Fourth of July is the perfect holiday to "go through" when you're early in your journey. I think it's a whole lot easier than some other holidays (not that you can't get through those others, they're just a bit more difficult).

Anyway, plain shredded beef or chicken, hamburgers and cheeseburgers (without buns), deviled eggs, and raw celery and cauliflower with ranch dressing are just some examples of great foods that fit in nicely with BOTH Atkins and a BBQ theme. If you're the one hosting, you can look for a low-carb BBQ sauce or you can search for some recipes for the same in either the Atkins books or online. Oh....and let's not forget regular salad.

There's no reason you can't get through a BBQ and still stay on your eating plan. Good luck and enjoy the event!

Everyone has great ideas! I will chime in w the suggestion of the Portabella mushrooms. I hv just discovered them and they are my new best friend. Today I made a spinach pizza. Tomorrow I will make a tuna melt down. Next I will find some kind of shrimp to stuff them. Stuff it w shrimp or a meat n veggies mix might be wonderful on the grill Smile I make a French Fry substitute with French green beans. I just wash and throw on a grilling pan w holes for the grill. I roast them till they start to crisp. Then I dip them in a mustard and mayo sauce...nothing will ever replace my beloved FF nor should they, the roasted beans are just a yummy treat.

Looking forward..this will be your most difficult BBQ of the year to plan because you are on week 3. Your next BBQ will be easier to plan cause you will be a pro and have a better understanding of what net carbs your body does best on. So look forward cause it will not always be a week three for you! Big high five to you! Btw this is my week 3 too...OWL and keeping my nc to 20 per day. My first two weeks I was learning sooooo much, and this week I am actually applying it...I will increase to 25 nc next wk, only 5 per wk for me. I don't want any surprises.

Just wanted to wish you luck! With every holiday you make it through you will feel stronger! The holidays just keep coming so it's best to accept that those comfort foods will be there and bring your own. As odd as it may seem, I think it's important to not go hungry. Eat a bit before you go, it's easier to say no to those carby foods when you feel satisfied. Good luck!
