Dieting and flying

Hi all. Just travelled 18 hours, 2 flights with a 2 hour transit between. First flight had dinner, second flight a midnight light snack then breakfast. It's playing havoc with recording my diaries as I moved six time zones west, so I have an extra six hours to record - Fri/Sat is 24+24+6 hours!

Food diary - I have no idea what was in half the meals; How many grams was the meat, what was that grainy vegetable (I think it was a vegetable) with the smoked chicken.... and the snack was a chicken something sandwich but I couldn't identify the "something".

Exercise - well, 17 hours sitting and an hour walking/standing/hanging around from 7pm to 7am.

I guess there's no easy answer - and on the way home next week I'll have six hours LESS in the same 24 hour period! Just wanted to share and see what anyone else did when travelling across time zones.

I typically throw up my hands and say "screw it", and just try to be reasonable about what I eat. One or two days of unlogged meals isn't going to make or break a diet.

Amusingly, airline meals usually strike me as reasonably good things to eat, largely because the portion sizes are sane. Plus, it's typical for one of the options to be a piece of chicken with some sort of vegetable accompaniment.

Traveling is always challenging. I would ask for a vegetarian entree to try and get a healthier meal. I would also take my own snacks and my water bottle. Of course, the water bottle has to be empty until you get through security, but then I fill up. (You may opt to not do this as you will have to get up and go to the bathroom during the flight). I try to get an aisle seat so I don't disturb others (otherwise, I would skip the water). Chew some gum... It's hard b/c there is no way to get physical activity on a plane, unless you want to look suspicious pacing the aisle. I try to walk when I am in the terminal, if I have a layover or get to the airport early. Not much you can do, kind of similar to a road trip. As long as you don't spend most of your life on a plane, it should balance out!

Hoser, yeah you're right there's no point worrying about it, just did my best - and avoided desert, snacks, the second wine refill etc.
Ncnole, good idea to take my own snacks and I often do for short trips, but on longer flights the food can be good and as Hoser says, sensible sizes. Also I was travelling with two kids under ten so the snacks that I carried were for them, but we did do some walking!
Marlene, yup, be sensible and don't stress, I think.
