they are 2 different settings. Your total for the exercise is what you have (estimated) burned based upon the exercises you have done for the day. enter your exercises ( daily routine including driving to work or elsewhere, desk work house work, etc.) . You can set daily defaults on this as well so you don't have to pick them on "average" days.
