So I go to college, but I'm home right now, so it was easier to start this calorie counting business. At school, me and my friends usually drink a bit about two nights a week, and I'm nervous that I'm going to end up screwing up my whole calorie counting deal with that. So for anyone out there who drinks on occasion, what do you do to balance that with your calorie intake?

I switched to vodka and water or club soda, 56 calories per drink, assuming one ounce of vodka. I will eat lighter that day, more salads and other low cal good foods. Just watch out, its way easy to say screw it I'm going to have some wings or pizza after you have had a few drinks.

The problem with alcohol is that it changes your hormonal levels, besides adding calories, and can prevent you from losing weight despite total calorie count. It is pretty much individual, it might affect you, or you may be OK. If you stall and do not lose weight while drinking alcohol try to not drink any for a while and see if it helps. If you do drink, stay away from cocktails and mixed drinks. Red wine in moderation is not the worst choice you can make.

Hahah, yes fatoldlady (feel kinda bad calling you that), I think i'm more worried about stumbling in the front door, scrambling for the nearest cellphone to order a larger cheese pizza. for myself.

vodka and club soda, great idea. i think one of the things i'm also worried about, and this may sound silly, is embarrassment. I live in a house with 4 other guys, and every weekend we all pool money together for some beer, and i know i'm gonna be slightly embarrassed to be like so.. yeah, hey guys... no beer for me. just uh, pick me up some unflavored vodka. though health is more important than seeming manly, drinkwise, i suppose.

1 oz. Tequila + 1 packet Crystal Light + 6 oz. diet Sprite + splash of lime = a decent low-calorie mock Margarita.

I do understand that young men do not sit around discussing their feelings and how they can be more supportive and your roommates are more likely to tease and try to sabatoge you. Your only other option is to really up your excercise and the good news is as a young man you will burn more calories naturally, the bad news is that after a night out you might not fell like hitting the gym. Just check out how many calories there are in a bottle of beer and then figure out how many you drink in an average night.

Adam, you are funny! YUP, you will stumble in and order that pizza, and now you don't need the cell phone, there is online ordering for pizza, My favorite is in their system, you don't even need to talk to anyone! In fact, there is probably an app for that! I love to have a few glasses of wine, or a whole bottle at times with friends, but it ALWAYS mess up my diet. The last few weeks I allowed myself beer from time to time with dinner, and that isn't bad.

Last month I drank a LOT. I've lost 15 pounds since then. My neighbors and I have bonfires outside. I came up with a great lower calorie drink. Light margarita mix! Sugar free and tequila. I also had frozen no sugar strawberries and vodka in my Magic Bullet Blender. We made such a mess! Woke up to strawberries smoothie all over the counter. NOW, I stick to light beer, or red wine (my neighbors moved so I am not so tempted any more) Smile A few weeks ago I bought a bottle of white to cook with. HAHAHAHAHA.. a little went into the dish, the rest, I DRANK! OOPS, I wasn't prepared. I danced in the living room and rocked to the fish I cooked. But, I did feel like crap the next morning and I screwed up my diet.

Since then I made a pact with myself. I always count the calories in my diet plan and I plan ahead if I am going to be drinking. YOU MUST MEASURE YOUR ALCOHOL! No free pouring even when tipsy. Wine glasses will mess you up! Get a shot glass and if you pour two, you have to count it! I know excatly how many calories I can have in alcohol and try not to go over it. SO, before you go out to party, you know EXACTLY when YOU need to stop. If someone asks me over to dinner last minute and they have wine, I usually can't work it in because my calories are all spent. I save calories for alcohol. I also know I am totally risking my diet when I drink. Its just that way Smile Also, when you log the alcohol, it logs the calories, and the carbs won't go up, it is counted differently (not sure exactly) so look at calories and not carbs.

ALSO, Drink a huge glass of water in between your drinks. It will help with hangover (sort of), when I was younger, I could go to the gym the next day and work it off as well. Good luck, have fun! Stick to it, you can!

I agree on the drinking water between drinks.
Also, drink a sipper, something not very sweet, like a regular martini, not a flavored one, where you will drink slower. Of course, this might not work for you if you like the taste of the alcohol.
An idea for wine, not sure if it was mentioned yet, but have wine spritzers. Mix wine with diet Sprite or seltzer water.

When this web site calculates the calories for alcohol it puts it in the protien part of the pie chart. I found that out when I was reveiwing my fat, carb, protien percentages and one day it looked like I ate a lot of protien but actually I didn't eat more protien just had a few drinks.

I drink vodka and a natural lime flavored club soda. I agree that you have to measure and log those numbers. If you look at my diet log you will see that my Saturday's are hosed. Of course I only try to drink one night a week if I am going to drink. My weakness is that I like a nice Russian Imperial Stout, and they are not "diet" friendly, at all. There's a pork chop in every bottle along with a side of potatoes and and chocolate cake.

[notso]fatoldlady - I never knew that but you are totally right! That is so weird. I wonder why it wouldn't be included in the Carb portion of the pie chart? I used to log on fitday.com and they had a separate slice on the pie chard for alcohol calories. Wonder if fatsecret could add something like that?
