Need Help - Too much Fat in Blood

I need advice. I found out that I am 30 pounds over weight and that I have too much fat in my blood. Dr. thinks it maybe a mistake so I have to take a retest. however; he put me on South Beach Diet. No way could I do that. I bought the books and researched it. There is nothing to eat. I know I need to cut carbs but that is confusing. I am going to the gym almost daily too but that doesn't work alone.

Has anyone had any success in a low carb diet? What tips can you give me?

i think that the problem many people have with the carbs is, that they eat to much carbs they actually shouldn't or wouldn't if they knew it better. for example: many people eat some bread when they have a salad - salad is good but why eat a piece of bread with it? or they have a lot of carbs for breakfast...toasts, cornflakes, bread.... make some eggs for example and have it with some fruits or smoothies. when you make yourself a meal, have a look at your plate. fill it with a lot of vitamins (veggies, fruits, salads - they say the plate should be half full of that), then a bit of protein (meat, chicken, fish) and just a little bit of carbs - if you really have to.

usually you are on a good track if you just record everything (and i really mean EVERYTHING) you eat during the day. and for that, this site (or mobile app, if you got it) is really great. then you have a great look, of how many carbs, proteins and calories you eat during the day.

Low carb is quite easy to do. just eat meat, fish, eggs, nuts and seeds, vegetables (except starchy veg like potato) and 1 serve of low carb fruit like berries. Keep to about 50g carbs in the beginning, less if you can and build up to a level where you still keep losing fat. Keep an eye on calories, walk everyday and do some kind of weights or strength training.

You have a good doc to advise you to eat a low-carb diet. The only problem with the South Beach diet is that it still follows the common misguided advice that Saturated Fat is bad.

Here are some off the cuff tips.
Avoid the following
-Sugar (and all of it's aliases, corn syrup, dextrose, honey, etc.)
-Grains (wheat, oats, rice, etc.)
-Vegetable Oils (Canola, safflower, soybean, corn (Corn oil is really bad), etc.)
-Potatoes
-Limit fruit to a handful of berries at first
-Avoid foods that make health claims (eg Low & Non-Fat items)

Include the following
-Good fats (butter, coconut oil, olive oil, lard, tallow, etc)
-Eat stews and broth made from bones
-Eat a lot of salad and non-starchy veggies
-Eat as many whole eggs as you want

Nothing is hard when you really want it. What does high fatty blood (I assume hypercholesterolemia?) mean to you? Has it stopped you doing things that matter to you? What are the consequences of this condition?

Thank you all. My dr told me that Fat in the blood is thick. It is when good and bad cholesterol is not balancing. Could lead to serious heart issues or stroke. I gained about 9 pounds in the stomach within 3 months due to steriods. The week we did the blood test i had surgery so it could be misleading but we are working as if it is true. I do a retest in 2 weeks.

I love the help/advice that you all have given to me. Mike thanks for the list. It is so helpful because I hate seafood. I lost 30 pounds last year just reading peoples post's and what they are doing. It is helpful because I can't find a diet that is working. Starting over seems to be harder this time around. So far tho the low-carb is doing good and I am going to the gym everyday.

Your doctor is one of the few that recognizes that excessive fat in the blood is caused by sugar and easily digestible carbohydrates... not dietary fat!

Removing processed and refined foods will improve your blood scores and reduce inflammation. However, it is my considered opinion that CVD is caused by increased inflammation and not necessarily a bad blood profile.

Your diet sounds super extreme. Are you sure you are losing fat and not just water and precious muscle? Doesn't sound like a great idea, but hey if it works for you then go for it.

This is a good starting point, but you really need an exercise plan to maximize the results. Even if it is just walking. Get moving!
