I have been on the GI diet for 13 months and have lost 41 lbs. Although this diet is more for ppl with heart and diabetic issues, I have neither. I'm just lazy. For me other diets are too time consuming and require too much effort. I look forward to reading about other members experiences as I know no one who is following this eating plan.

The basic technique for eating the low GI way is simply a "this for that" approach - ie, swapping high GI carbs for low GI carbs. You don't need to count numbers or do any sort of mental arithmetic to make sure you are eating a healthy, low GI diet.

Use breakfast cereals based on oats, barley and bran
Use breads with wholegrains, stone-ground flour, sour dough
Reduce the amount of potatoes you eat
Enjoy all other types of fruit and vegetables
Use Basmati or Doongara rice
Enjoy pasta, noodles, quinoa
Eat plenty of salad vegetables with a vinaigrette dressing

...and eat at a caloric deficit. This would be the most important piece of the puzzle if you hope to lose weight. From what I've read, the food choices you end up making are low-cal options that typically put you in a deficit but this deficit is key and can be achieved without eating GI.

Anyways..by no means am I ripping the GI diet..it can take some of the 'work' out of losing weight by lowering your caloric intake by making healthier choices and that's a good thing. Smile

I ate a bunch of rice early in the weight loss and found that I didn't have any problem losing the weight. I only recently got stuck - but I seem to be losing inches now and not so much weight.

I would not say it is the opposite of Atkins. Atkins allows eating a lot of vegetables, and allows you to add more carbs after initial 2 weeks phase of induction. It uses exactly the same principle of lowering your blood sugar and reducing insulin spikes. Food high in protein and fat has lower GI, hence it is allowed for Atkins. It is better to use glycemic load than index, as it provides better picture of how you will respond to carbs. Different types of rice have different GI and GL, some lower than other but none are a low GI food.

I do lean towards the track everything approach regardless of diet type, especially with the 'eat all you want of certain things' types, as the tracking will allow you to see whether that type of diet is actually causing the calorie deficit you need or not.

I know some disappointed vegans who believed that a strict vegan diet would guarantee losing weight, and it didn't turn out that way at all for them, as everyone is different.

according to the one book that I have that lists GI Values, Basmati rice is in the medium range - 58. Wild rice is 57.
