Last night I was making spaghetti. I thought about substituting ground turkey instead of ground beef but when I got to the grocery store and compared the 94/6 lean ground beef to the ground turkey the lean beef has less fat and only 10 more calories per serving... and the ground beef had more iron. I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on the lean beef vs turkey.

For me its a taste preference and I buy the 97/3 or 99/1 of Jennie-O ground turkey. Didja happen to notice the cholesterol or saturated fats?

i looked at the cholesterol and saturated fats....it didnt seem like tooo big of a difference. I just dont know how I feel about turkey.....I love hamburger meet. I got the leanest kind I can find. I dont know if I like the way ground turkey tastes....maybe its not soo much the taste but the spongy texture.

LoL if you don't like it, don't eat it b/c this has to be a life time things. Buy the lean hamburger and if your making it for like spaghetti or something, rinse it well OR if you're making pattys try and make them on a grill and always blot as much grease off as possible. I don't buy hamburger anyways, usually I have venison burger and I get my burger fix at the mom's house now and again so turkey burger has been a blessing for me

I have tried ground turkey MANY times and many different ways. I just don't like it. I'm a ground beef girl. If you buy the lean stuff it's not bad. To me, the ground turkey has a weird taste. Maybe I'm just expecting it to taste like hamberger...I don't know. It's just icky to me.

I always thought ground turkey was cheaper, but it doesn't sound like it is. It must have something to do with being less in saturated fats.

Why does it have to be a lifetime thing? Seems like a grand statement for 2 foods that aren't that different nutritionally speaking. What if I eat lean ground beef now because I prefer it, but my tastes change & in 2 months I start preferring ground turkey? Am I committed to buying ground beef for the rest of my life?

I feel like maybe I am not use to it yet....I use to love shrimp until I was like 5 then I hated it and stopped eating it and now I love it again...I use to HATE mushrooms....now I eat portabellas as burgers....I feel like I just put this stigma on turkey, that it is gross or something and I havent given it a chance lol.

@Kat, I probably should have clarified heh I didn't mean specifically the ground beef and turkey...I meant eating healthy in general. Just because something may be healthy for you, doesn't mean you have to eat it if you don't like it and don't force yourself to just to lose weight.

Ah...well that makes sense then, lol. I was scared you were going to start force-feeding me ground turkey.

Out of curiosity, were you comparing meats that were equally lean? I prefer ground turkey personally because I can get leaner ground turkey cheaper than leaner ground beef. What some might not be used to if they are used to beef is that beef is really dense. Again I usually have ground turkey (93/7), but one time I made meatloaf out of lean beef (96/4) which I happened to have at the time. It was leaner- lower in fat, etc. than the ground turkey I had. The resulting loaf was super dense. Usually when I make meatloaf with ground turkey it is kind of soft, light and airy/spongy. I happen to like that, but to each his own.

The protein in beef is better, so if taste isn't an issue I always choose the extra-lean beef.
I have both though, my wife only likes turkey so we typical buy ground turkey but I use the 93/7 beef for my burgers. I personally much prefer the taste of beef.

I had a Turkey Burger tonight and was very good. I am staying away from all red meat for my health. I always ate fast food burgers before my diet and I really dont miss all the red meat I used to eat.

Turkey burgers always taste funny to me... so I opt for lean beef, granted I don't eat it alot though, because women shouldn't over eat on red meats. As far as cholesterol and sat. fat, your body actually needs these things to function. The sat. fat and cholesterol we get from natural sources such as animal fats are good for us (in moderation). If you body doesn't get enough natural cholesterol, it begins to produce it in the liver, and this is where we get the BAD choloesterol. If we feed our body what it needs, then it won't try to over compensate on its own. There are many myths out there regarding fats and choloesterol, it really pays to do your research but to also come into the mind frame of eating natural things, just as our bodys were designed for. So I wouldn't be too afraid to go with the ground beef if you really just prefer it over the turkey, just don't eat it every night of the week Smile

Thanks! I feel like unless I can fine lean ground turkey, at a reasonable price then I will stick to my lean beef. I love red meat, and I personally dont feel like I need to cut it out of my diet...maybe just cut back.

there are actaully a lot of studies that support red meat and heart health, lower choloesterol and blood pressure. But with anything, it's all about moderation! I could never turn down a nice juicy hamburger or steak!
