Would a Zumba class be classified as "fast dancing"? We incorporate weights into the class and feel that more calories are burned then when dancing. Any ideas? Could Zumba be put into the list of excercies?

I use the Aerobic dancing option, which is about right. More specifics would be nice though.

I have a BMF that tells me how many calories I burn. I am 5'0", 125 lbs. and have been doing Zumba for the past year. I do the Zumba DVD's. I burn 175 calories when I do 20 minute video, around 300 when I do a 40 minute video and 430 calories when I do 60 minute video.

The amount of calories burned has gradually decreased as my body has become more fit and efficient and as I have lost weight. I was probably burning over 500 doing 60 minutes in the beginning.
I do weights 4 x week and am fairly muscular. Hope this info might help you.

NCNOLE: How much of a change in your body did you see doing Zumba for a year? Is it enough to change someones body and lose weight without a diet? I have taken a zumba class and it was a lot of fun and I was sweating gallons and couldn't walk for 2 days after because my calf's hurt so bad!!! I just got the Exhilarate DVD set and am going to start doing those. I am wondering am I going to have to diet too to lose the weight?

Well, I have been able to shed about 40 lbs for a total of just over 80 lbs. The main difference is more energy and just feeling better overall. I do weights 4x week and I think that makes more of a difference as appearance goes. My abs and arms look much better. I think I have lost 5 inches on each calf. (that is probably more from the zumba cardio stuff).

Yes, you will likely need to change your eating habits in order to lose weight. Weight loss is more about what you put in your mouth, than exercise. You can lose weight without exercising - but you will still be flabby and out of shape. I would suggest just reducing your portions, making healthier food choices, and eating more veggies. Personally, I am 90% vegan and mainly live off of veggies. I have learned to love veggies over the past 2 years and pretty much eat a large salad with lunch and dinner and then 2-3 more veggies. With lunch I might have a veggie wrap. Dinner (if I have room) will have some type of veggie protein like beans or tofu.

I am a vegetarian have been since the 7th grade. That is why I never considered Atkins and why when I was mulling over Nutrisytem which I have rejected completely for multiple reasons I was concerned about their lack of vegetarian choices. They say they have a vegetarian program but it is mostly pizza and pasta. I need to lose 40lb. My real problem is compulsive and emotional eating. I just need to figure out how to get that under control. I have the knowledge of how to eat healthy in my head but my compulsions override it every time. I am currently rereading a book by Author Geneen Roth on Breaking free from Compulsive Overeating. I will start doing the Zumba and alternate it with a Strength Training DVD Arms Zumba then Legs Zumba and so on.

I have had similar problems. Atkins had given me the stomach flu real bad. I am still trying overall to cut back on the bad carbs, or processes, simple carbs. i don't like to put food in a category. But, we all pretty much know what to eat, it is doing it. For me I have to encourage/push myself to eat most of the times. I have been an emotional eater, on, and off. Mostly I have been struggling with the other/flip side of the coin. Overall, eating disorders do not go poof overnight. So, as I was telling my friend sitting, and talking about various things. Sometimes it will be a medium struggle, sometimes a hard one, other times a lighter one. I also struggle with other disorders which make it even harder. But, I am determined, need to get on the ball. And, I have to think positive! We can indeed do this! I will have to move more as well! The DVD Zumba sounds good for the arms & the legs. Can you find it for purchase at any stores. I have so many tools, DVD's tapes! I just need to use them, collecting dust will not help us! Like you said it is just a matter of doing it, we all know pretty much what to do! I think I will stick to my own diet, no one knows our bodies better then us. Cut back, eat enough, and don't deprive ourselves. Moving more helps to! Good luck to you! You look like you are on the right road! Never give up on you!

When I did Zumba, I used a Mio fitness watch, which tracks your heart rate and calculates the calories burned during the exercise. Now the watch was calibrated to my particular weight and resting heart rate and Zumba class was always around an hour long. My watch always read between 550 - 750 calories in that time. The higher burned calorie rate always was when I was in the Zumba Toning class. I would put the Zumba under fast dancing, but basically you could be burning more calories than "Fast dancing" would give you credit for.

I googled calories burned doing Zumba and found a website that let you put in your weight, intensity, and duration and give an estimated calories burned. For mine it says I burn around 700 calories for a 1 hour class. I usually bump it down a little for a regular class, and keep it around 7 when we use weights. I didn't read all the posts, but someone asked about losing weight with Zumba and not watching what you eat...my teacher lost 60 pounds doing Zumba and didn't diet. I've haven't seen any loss yet, but I can tell I am gaining muscle and have seen changes in my body, so I know it's doing something.
