The SBD is a great way to lose weight and keep it off. I have been on and off the SBD for 7 years now and have lost a total of 45 lbs and have kept it off. It is a realistic way to eat and is also easy to make it a lifestyle. To answer your question, it isn't necessary to count calories and/or carbs on phase 1 of the SBD. Once you start eating grains and fruit, you may want to count calories and keep an eye on how many grains and fruits you are eating daily. One tip...make sure to exercise! Even if its only 20 minutes on the elliptical...get your body moving. I noticed that weight loss is almost twice as fast with exercise. Good luck!!
