So I'm almost through week 3 of the overhaul and I'm starting to have pain in my right knee

[Little back history]
I am a klutz! lol no really, I wasn't allowed to walk down steps alone as a child because I would always trip and fall. It also never failed that I would twist one or both ankles when I would run as a kid...sometimes I would just trip and fall on FLAT ground! Makes me wonder if I had like an inner ear problem! Then as a young teen I played volleyball and did cheerleading...anytime I fell or dove, always on the right knee. Then while waitressing when I was 18, I slipped and fell while carry 2 glass racks...landed on (you guessed it) my right knee! Anytime I trip and fall (seeing a pattern here) I land on my right knee it seems! There is also several female family members, including my mother, who have had to have knee replacement surgery.

Ok, so what can I do to prevent pain in my knee that could prevent me from working out or worse, cause an injury.
Should I buy a knee brace and how would I pick one out?

I would see an orthopedic doc before I bought a knee brace. Many of the braces for sale in stores aren't adequate enough and you need to get diagnosed before you know what to brace Smile

Ice and heat will help with knee pain as well as ibuprofin.

OMG! You sound just like me! My whole life I was teased and called incredible ‘klutz’. They used to say - you are only one we know that is able to trip over drawn line on the flat ground. Every bigger bone in my body has been broken, placing me in the cast (due to falls) for several weeks at the time…(my mom says thank god you grew up in Europe….if you were in hospital here so much…they would think I abused you..lol) ..and. Oh…yeah…I could also be standing talking to someone and my ankle would just twist and I’d end up on the ground or looking for something to grab and stop the fall.

When knee pain became unbearable, I went to see the doctor and …get this – he finds that I was born with ligaments being too long! They are not able to keep everything aligned properly and years of tripping, falling and improper alignment took the toll. I am able to stand and then flip my foot inward for almost 90 degrees and stand on my ankle bone… and I thought I was just ‘flexible’…yeah right!

I explored braces but if you want decent one….you’ll have to dish out big bucks ($1000 to $2700….some even more than that). I spoke to several people that used them and found that only reason they used them is to ‘mask’ the pain while they are doing activities they like…e.g. my boss is using it only once a year when skiing with his kids….so, plus and minus for me….I decided to put extra effort and make my muscles strong to help ligaments. Oh…and don’t be fooled, most of my life I played sports and was very, very active but on the ground more then any other kid I ever knew (lol…with exception of maybe you now! )… LOL

Go see your doctor and they will give you whole list of exercises that could help you better then any brace on the market…but heads up – get ready to spent some amount of time on boring exercises (daily) and if you stop…symptoms will be back within two weeks! Boring repetitions are my biggest obstacle….if I could pass 30 minutes of being bored every day…..I could save myself a lot of pain…

Good luck!

P.S. I also use custom made insoles. They are also expensive (300-600 bucks) but my insurance pays 80%….so it’s bearable and they do help. If you and your doctor find this to be an option for you - ..I find ½ foot length insole works better then whole foot length insole….

Beside exercising and insoles I also have to ‘THINK” about every step I make and all of that combined – helps a lot to ease the pain!

NSYU: You just made me feel so much better!! I make the joke that i wasn't tripping, I was testing gravity. I do have an appt scheduled for a regular Dr b/c I haven't had a physical since in probably 10yrs and I was going to talk to her about it. I have to see a podiatrist because I have a lot of problems with my feet Sad
I never knew about any of that other stuff though, thank you for the information!

I have the exact same issues except my left knee. I have broken bones too from it. I have been to a few drs over time with out any real change. I wear custom orthotics as well, which help A LOT, but I still keep hurting me knee Smile

NoChubbyMom - I know how you (probably) felt when you were younger! Not to mention that every time I wanted to do something as a child that was bit more ‘dangerous’ (e.g. skiing) – I would get that scared look from grown ups around me…like, we can’t afford to have you in hospital AGAIN and, after awhile, as soon as I saw those looks…I gave up on whatever is I wanted to do. Actually, soon I gave up completely. .. even asking them (knew what their answer will be)! I just waited till I was 18 and they couldn’t stop me anymore (lol..18 yrs old + first skiing lesson = broken leg) .
Then add my sister to the mix, announcing to everyone that I’m - ‘born with two left feet’, ‘probably adopted because we have no such a klutzs in our family’, ‘testing gravity (yeah..she got that one too)’, ‘got a way to be centre of attention’ etc. – it was really annoying to listen to all of that, not being able to explain and prove that I’m not doing it on purpose. LOL…when we finally figured out what was wrong …. I said to my sister, I’ll sue her for 10 mil…for damage done by her to my persona while I was growing up! LOL…we still joke about it but it helps to know why I’m doing it.
Same as you….I had all kind of theories as to why this was happening but ligaments too long – did not even cross my mind. I did not even imagine that could be even possible…

Jsiccorhand – I was given brace (cheaper version) to try it out and same as you – I was still hurting myself (maybe because my mindset was…ok, now I have a brace…nothing can go wrong) . It was taking to long to put it on, then re-adjusting in the middle of the day (somehow it would move around…I guess because it wasn’t designed for me but it was universal brace) so after try-out period…I just decided I’m not cut for it (no patience) and went with exercising…

Out of everything I was given (that does help) I find that as long as I THINK about every step I make – injuries do not come! I even have to think how do I pull my chair up (yup..got hur while doing that too), walk, run, climb upstairs or go down stairs….and I have special way getting in and out car.

Other day I was reading post here about music that moves people and keep them going while they are working out and I thought …. Lucky them…minute my mind gets moved by music – I make a "wrong step" and then back to injury and inactivity…LOL….oh, well…little things we ‘klutzs’ can’t afford to do. Wink

NSYU I had a brace once too. It was more trouble then it was worth!! LAst time i had a cast, the dr in the er was really lecturing me and telling me I might have inner ear issues or other such things, and I just laughed and told him, i just don't pay attention! I think its true! Like you said, if I *think* about what I am doing, and how I am moving, I am fine, but then I get distracted and start thinking about something else, and boom! I just need to slow down a little and pay attention Smile
I don't ski anymore either.

I refuse to learn to ski...tried snowboarding once and ended up with a bruised tailbone (flipped end over end...not rolled...FLIPPED) I've been lucky to never break anything...went to the ER for various things (starting at a yr old...busted my head open climbing on a hutch)
I can walk fine on the treadmill but if I'm gonna sing...I hold on to the bars LOL and jogging takes complete focus! In a few short weeks I've already taught my daughter to not speak to mommy when I'm running...its dangerous! Cardio and aerobics videos take a lot of focus too...but I've been getting better.
Last night I couldn't do a cardio dvd b/c my knee was sore and I didn't wanna do a bunch of squats and lunges but I did walk and run. My knee didn't hurt doing that, which was weird but my big toe start to hurt and my foot got tingly for the last couple minutes...very strange!
And yes, I've been accused of "making it up" or trying to "get attention" I hate that! My Mom is the only person (well, and on here now) I tell about my knee hurting b/c I don't want people thinking I'm whining or just looking for attention. I've had a few weird joint related "things" the past year and I only tell my Mom. She doesn't think I'm crazy and knows I'm not looking for anything, just wondering if I should be concerned...I RARELY go to the dr's for anything!

First, see a knee specialist. You may have something torn or damaged that can be fixed. Don't give up on working out but watch the intensity level and how long you train. Keep track of what triggers the pain, either movement or duration.
Your feet could contribute to your problems but start at the source of your pain. If it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck....
For anyone with joint pain from training you should use RICE Treatment,
Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.
Nsaids, like ibuprofin will work good as an anti-inflammatory for most people. Tylenol does nothing but mask your pain.

Good luck.

Heads up!

First time I made serious damage to my knees, is because it didn’t hurt while I was jogging or walking – it hurt only while I was going downstairs…, so I continued to walk and jog…with mind seat “if it doesn’t hurt while I’m doing it….it can’t be bad”… .you can imagine what was end result of that idea!

Second…I get same weird feeling with my toes….but mine feels like my second toe went over big toe (inside my shoe) and it’s resting there! Feeling was so intense that several times I actually took my running shoe off to see is it really sitting like that! Off course, it wasn’t but that is how it felt.

I had a Dr's appt set up for the 1st of February, but b/c of my insurance not getting approved on time (grrrrrr) I have to push it back. Most likely sometime in February I'll be going in to see the regular dr and talk to her and then go from there. I've been taking your advice bwana...thank you. And NSYU...damnit! lol
