Just wondering if anyone can write the new program to use on Fatsecret for the new Pointsplus.

Thanks,

I'm not sure why FatSecret asked which program I am on...(WW off course) because beside calories - it doesn't give you WW points?
I just singed on...so maybe I did not get to see it yet, or should I upgrade?
If anyone could provide feedback - that would be great...
as well as pointplus points calculater as Lori was asking. Wink
Thanks in advance.

There used to be an option to display WW points here, but they took it away earlier this year in The Great Weight Watchers Debaucle of 2010. Man were people pissed!!! Anyway, fatsecret's official answer is that it wanted to be neutral and not show support of any one particular diet plan. But most of us assume that WW put the pressure on them to remove the points. WW has a history of suing for things like that, as they should, since the points system is a patented piece of intellectual property and use without compensation is actually illegal.

P.S. - I wouldn't mind paying monthly fee (not crazy $50 bucks per month as WW is asking for...and they don't even have smart phone applications yet) to FatSecret if they manged to talk WW into some sort of agreement.

I've heard the WW site is pretty bad. As far as FS goes, I've been on here for coming up on 2 years, and I have never seen any change aside from the removal of WW points and the addition of banner ads. I think they focus more on the app (which is awesome BTW!!!) and neglect this site. But, it's free. So I'm not complaining Smile

LOL...I think I will re-think WW and stay permanently on here.... I guess it'll take little bit of adjusting but once I figure it out (poriton sizes and enter all my own food)...I think I'll be fine.

Thank you for your input....I was driving myself nuts, thinking there must be something I don't see and WW points are hiding somewhere in plain sight...LOL.

WW is ok but more old fashioned. I lost with them before but it's all about dragging paper, calculator and restaurant guide with you. After awhile...you change purse - you can't eat because you forgot your restaurant guide in your other purse...etc. When I did it...if you wanted access to the web...you had to pay extra and it just did not work (I couldn't now drag my lap-top with me as well and look for internet connection) and now they have monthly pass for 50 bucks but that is INSANE PRICE + it's taken away from you when you are not member anymore...so I 50 bucks per month for years to come - sounded bit much! They should have something more affordable for people that are on maintaince.

Oh, well...their loss and cheers to FatSecret. Wink

Thank you all

This may mostly fall on deaf ears, but the REST API used by Fatsecret is available for use, so if you have slight-to-moderate web based programming experience, you can create a quick clone and implement any weight watchers features you want. I was using this back in the day when I was working on a program for everyone that tracked extra information. Eventually I got lazy and quit working on the project to do more fun things, but it's definitely not too difficult.

http://platform.fatsecret.com/api/Default.aspx?screen=res

I just happened to actually click through the links at the bottom of the page and found the "platform" one. They tar/gzipped a bunch of libraries and sample projects there. You could probably just toss in a quick function to track weight watchers points alongside everything else. If I understand correctly, weightwatchers calculations for points are 'a secret', so you'd have to manually input the values for items the first time around, but afterward it would be really easy to reuse.

Hope that helps...someone.

NSYU, the app is what makes it work. No more guessing! You can just look it up. I keep the FS app open when I'm cooking, before I go to a restaurant, etc. If WW can't figure out how to make a decent app that works and doesn't cost a fortune, I really don't understand why people keep paying- except for the group support because I can see that being very useful. But WW is a HUGE very wealthy company, so I suppose they're doing something right to make all those profits.

an00bis - thank you but you are right...totally deaf ears...well, not really....I have friends that are more web design savy than me...so, they will help! I will for sure send them link you have here.

k8yk - I agree...app is perfect! I can take it with me anywhere I go...now only thing I have to worry about is taking my phone with me...so much easeir.

BigPain - I think it's going to take some getting used to but at the end .. this application might work the same way WW did (for me in the pased anyway..)...

Cheers to everyone! Off I go to 'gain' some calories by starting my treadmill that has been collecting dust for a months now! Wink

I thought someone posted the points formula but I can't find it. I don't know if it was taken down in fear of copyright infringement, but in any case...You can find a fairly accurate food point value formula on a certain website. I'm not saying anything, but it begins with a "W", ends in an "A", with i-k-i-p-e-d-i in the middle (Is it me or does that sound like a spa treatment for a 5 year old's foot?) They also have a convoluted calculation for your daily point target. I don't know how accurate it is.

I would imagine that the removal of the WW Points has a lot to do with the roll out of WW new PointPlus program. The point target and the points for food have both changed.

I just found this thread and it is very useful! I wish I could track my WW points on here and my blackberry app Sad. Oh well, so I guess I'm stuck with counting calories or doing it manually

I love the WW site! It's only $17 a month for an online membership. I can't go to meetings with that, but I don't want to. It's a wonderful program, and the site is full of good information and supportive people.

You can get the new WW points plus calculation from the internet. I built a spread spreadsheet with the new formula and then just copy and paste my fat, fiber, carbs, and protein values from my food diary to my spreadsheet. It is pretty close and a lot easier than using the new WW calculator to figure the new points. I am disappointed with the WW lifetime membership and their web site. Free lifetime membership is not true if you want to use their web site to log food and track points - you have to pay the same as someone who is losing weight. I like this site better anyway - easier to use. I just go to WW meetings once a month to keep my lifetime membership active and to keep myself on track.

This is a good starting point, but you really need an exercise plan to maximize the results. Even if it is just walking. Get moving!
