I was watching a tv show last night via the DVR called food detectives with Ted Allen.. they did a test with a bunch of people half ate on one side of the room with big dinner plates and the other half ate on the other side of the room with smaller dinner plates.. Guess what? The people who ate on the larger plates ate more food.. it worked out to be an average of 150 calories more per person.. which they extrapolated out to be 15 lbs a year.. all because our china is too big. I just thought it was interesting.. and it is a fun show if you like sciency kind of stuff.

to be clear they thought they were taste testing two pasta dishes and there was a divider between the two groups so they could not see the different size of the plates.. just thought it was cool and neat.. that the bigger plate side of the room at 38% more food than the small plate room.

that program also had a segment on MSG. I can't remember the set up, but some people said they had headaches after eating chinese food, and they knew it was from the MSG even though there was no MSG in their food.

I wish I could buy MSG somewhere. I understand it's a really good flavor enhancer.
DISCLAIMER: I expect to lose this weight over the next 6 months to 5 years. I'm not going to feel like a failure if it takes an entire month to lose 1 pound. I'm going to feel like a success when that happens! I may offer advice that I'm currently not taking myself. Feel free to call me on that!

I use Accent instead of salt all the time, it just tastes better to me, but most stores carry it, next to the salt.

Lastnight they also talked about the odiferous qualities of my favorite vegetable.. asparagus!! The stinking stalk best served roasted with salt and pepper!

Asparagus and brocolli. Gotta watch out for their odiferous qualities =).

And, when not entertaining company... I eat all my meals on the small "salad" plates that came with my dish set. (Which is why I'm upset one of them broke... even replacements.com doesn't have them by the piece!). It amazes me how much more I'll personally eat if I have a bigger plate... something to do with the amount of negative space I guess! =)

I've been in the habit of using smaller plates for years. The only exception is when I'm eating multiple things on the same plate, like a side veggie or potato or something.... I don't like my foods to touch, yup I'm a freak.

Oooh, i do that too! my mom went through a stage of cooking only chinese and thai, cause all of us kids are the type who separate our food and then eat one item at a time! so now, i fully separate everything except my chinese! =)
