I originally wrote this in my journal but I am seriously wondering if anyone else has had the epiphany as they changed thier lifestyle that thier minds would get stronger as well. Here's an experience I had last night. I'd love to hear your stories!

It took the lights going out in a small New Jersey town for the Lights to go on in a large Philadelphia Man.

Yesterday afternoon we had HORRIBLE thunderstorms here at my sisters home where i'm visiting in Laurel Springs, New Jersey. Trees were down everywhere there was some minor flooding and power was out all over, except a few houses here and there, my family's being one of the lucky few. Well after dinner I went out for my walk and I am glad I did.

I walked through this quiet neighborhood and realized that with most of the roads closed due to flooding and trees being down there were very few cars on the streets so I could wander in relative silence. I shut off my iPod and just listened to the sounds of the night. The crickets, the stream and the sounds of people actually sitting outside talking to thier neighbors instead of being buttoned up inside thier air conditioned homes rang through the air for once rather then the constant din of cars and the annoying hum of central air conditioners. With the lack of light polution, car lights and even home lights save the occcasional candle light or back yard fire, I was in almost complete darkeness save the moonlight and starlight which tried its best to shine through the heavily treelined streets to no avail. In this little suburban community which i usually overwhelmed with light, I was seeing shooting stars only 14 miles from Philadelphia!

As I walked deeper into the residential area of Laurel Springs, the older area, i entered the area which is inhabited by 150 year old fully wooden victorian summer homes. These homes were once the properties of wealthy Philadelphia socialites in the late 1800's. Needless to say seeing the candle light in these windows and the complete silence, I was transported back to the time when these houses were in thier prime! I felt as if I was walking down the street in the 1870's!!! So as i walked down Maple Avenue I realized I just passed 305 Maple ave. This is a local historic site. It was the summer home of poet Walt Whitman from 1876-1884. Whitman being one of my favorite Poets, and nothing but reflections on my mind a snippet of one of my favorite poems from Leaves of Grass (Partially written in Laurel Springs) came to mind:

I Sing the Body Electric.

The circling rivers, the breath, and breathing it in and out,
The beauty of the waist, and thence of the hips, and thence downward toward the knees,
The thin red jellies within you, or within me—the bones, and the marrow in the bones,
The exquisite realization of health;
O I say, these are not the parts and poems of the Body only, but of the Soul,
O I say now these are the Soul!

I thought of this little bit because i was concentrating on my heartbeat, my breathing and my pulse as I walked. It made me start to think pretty deeply. A month ago before I started this journey I would have been fine sitting there on the couch in my Air conditioning watching TV. I would have missed this amazing experience of walking outside on such an amazing night. My body, though not healthy yet, will take me to places and let me see and do things that I have missed these past five years. The body is an Amazing thing and last night I learned that if I let it, my new lifestyle will not only stimulate my body but my mind and soul as well.

What a great story! My experiences have not been nearly as poignant as yours, but I do live right next to a nature reserve that has beautiful trails throughout. Sometimes as I walk a deer (or family of deer!) will cross the path ahead of me & I get that same feeling, that being more active & getting out of the house is enhancing my appreciation of the natural world. I too look forward to being better able to get out there & experience the world in a different & healthier way.

Thanks for sharing...love it! Smile

I so agree!!! I have always loved the outdoors and spent a lot of time outside, but as I gained the weight I noticed I wasn't hiking anymore, but sitting around the campfire eating smores and drinking malibu rum. Now I HIKE and spend as much time exploring the great outdoors as I can!

Great story and I look forward to having my own experience like that.

Thank you guys! My nights before this would pretty much have me either staring at a documentary, snuggling with a book or engrossed in a phillies game on the radio. The past two months I have spent more time moving around or ACHING to do something when I'm not. Last night was just a huge wake up call to me that made me realize that hey you don't need to watch life on tv or read about it in books I can get back out there and start to live it again to the fullest if I put in the effort.
