So... I was looking at some peoples diet journals and stuff, and I noticed that some people eat like 800-900 calories a day...

I've read a lot of forums on how much to eat, etc... but dang, like if I want to drop weight faster, should I try to eat less calories? I've heard both arguments - like eat more, lose more... eat less, lose more...

Any good websites someone can direct me to? Maybe a site that you can enter your info and get RDI?

measure your BMR.
To survive you need atleast 1200 kcal for your inner organs to work.

This is a website to measure your BMR, your Basal Metabolic Rate

Katch-McArdle formula (BMR based on lean body weight)
If you have had your body composition tested and you know your lean body mass, then you can get the most accurate BMR estimate of all. This formula from Katch & McArdle takes into account lean mass and therefore is more accurate than a formula based on total body weight. The Harris Benedict equation has separate formulas for men and women because men generally have a higher LBM and this is factored into the men's formula. Since the Katch-McArdle formula accounts for LBM, this single formula applies equally to both men and women.

BMR (men and women) = 370 + (21.6 X lean mass in kg)
1 pound = 0.45359237 kilograms

You don't need to starve to lose weight and when you do, you lose lean muscle instead of fat. Our bodies evolved to deal with periods of starvation by storing fat. When your body thinks it is starving, it will burn off muscle and try to hold onto fat. Yes, you will lose weight, but it will not look good. Muscle is what keeps you toned and helps you exercise and be healthier in general.

To lose fat, you need to eat the right amount, not too much, not too little. How much you have to eat depends on the individual, but you can find calculators like others have posted that will help you find an estimate. Eating too little is not the way to go because you can't keep it up forever, and once you start eating normally again, you'll gain weight back faster than you'd believe.

Grr, I had replied to this post and then it didn't go through, lol...

Anyway, I appreciate all the input, using some of your suggestions and the formula (thanks Drunk! Smile ) I can see that a lot of the sites were pretty close together as far as their estimates. That'll at least give me a better baseline to start thinking of.

I've also heard about the 1200 calorie "rule", and I think that is the guideline I'm going to stick to, but I just need to stop feeling bad if I eat over like 1400 calories, as long as I make healthy choices!

Thanks for all the input!

I have stuck at 1500 calories for the last 9 weeks, and it's really working for me. I have lost an average of 3 pounds a week, so I feel that I doing things healthfully and it's doable for the long run.

Its tempting to eat low calories but its not worth messing up your metabolism like that. I'd never have under 1200 and if I am exercising I will have around 1400. Thats when I lose the most weight. I find even 1200 too low really not only because I am more hungry than that but also weight stalls if I do that for more than 2 days. Eat a good amount of calories based on your bmr and that way you will eat well and feed your body its nutrients and lose weight at a good rate.

This is so hard for me to do, because I set my RDI at like 1500... so I feel bad when I eat around 1400 calories, but I've heard that a lot about eating more and losing less, I just don't always have access to the healthiest calories so I do limit myself.

I know my ideal weight, flat stomach, is between 195 - 205lbs. If I take in about 2000 calories per day I stay at that weight. If I take in less I start to starve and end up gaining weight once I have a breakdown and go on an eating rampage. I'm up to 270lbs now, lots of stuff changed when I had my gall bladder removed and lost my job at the same time and I gained a ton of weight, so I'm trying to take in about 2250 - 2500 calories per day and I should lose 1 pound or more per week until I hit about 245 or so then I'll get back to my 2000 calorie diet.

Not sure what exercise routine you have, but overall fitness and health is about good quality cals in and good cals "out", ie burned. It's best to eat a good healthy calorie amount and do exercise to create the differential to lose weight. It's also much easier to deal with mentally than feeling hungry all the time. Smile

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!

Well I work out usually probably 6 days a week, at least 5... with a mix of home DVDs, team sports and hikes usually... It's just the days when I don't work out that I'm concerned about limiting the calories I eat... cause lets face it, sometimes we all need a day to just do nothing. (That day is today for me, ugh I feel lazy but I am just OUT of it).

I have the problem of not eating enough. I've found through experience that if I eat less than 1500 cal, my body starts going into "starvation mode" and I actually gain weight. I aim to eat between 1600 and 1800 calories, depending on what exercise and how much I do for the day. I will go over the 1800 if I am still hungry. Muscles are the best way to boost your metabolism and if they don't have the fuel they need, they can't do their jobs!

Sturgeon... you might also want to take into account that sometimes people aren't that honest with themselves about what they log into FS!

My RDI at at 1500, and I tend to go with what I'm feeling on the day. I'm learning to listen to the old gal and do what she asks. Today, probably because I ate a high in protein breakfast straight after waking up, I was on fire and wanted to eat my house! So I'm going to get my 1500 if not a little bit more, yet out of curiosity I just weighed myself and I weigh what I weigh upon waking. Yesterday I was "meh" about eating, so I didn't even reach 1200. Sometimes you need it, sometimes you don't. There is no magic number, you just have to learn to interpret your urges and cravings Smile

Meanwhile 800-900 sounds unhealthy and definitely no fun.

What about the biggest looser idea? Your weight X 7 = the calories you eat if you want to loose weight? I'm having the same problem Sturgeonqueen is having- and it seems like I'm loosing weight now that I'm eating less.... it's so confusing! Smile

The biggest loser idea works until you get too low... even they say you shouldn't go under 1200 calories a day, which is what you'd hit if you followed it after 170 lbs. (as a woman, men are even higher.) but seriously..800-900 calories a day... well, i guess i have to quote my grandfather... "if she jumped off a bridge, would you?!"

If you're just out to drop the scale, I guess it could eventually work... if you didn't mind sacrificing your muscle... until you realized how hungry you were and ate. (Because you can't starve forever, and your metabolism isn't gonna know how to handle food after all that mess...) but even then... i don't know... my goal is to be healthy, energetic, vibrant... and i've found if i go under 1200, i feel sluggish, hungry, grumpy, and even downright mean. its not worth it to me. =).

I'm definitely trying to hike my calories up a little more. I've seen weight loss over the past week and I've been going between 1150-1350 calories... so, I guess it's working both ways. Even though I have been a little slack on exercise, I think it is the extra calories helping. And i'm TRYING to make them healthy calories!! But my tempting Easter cupcakes aren't helping... lol
