Does anyone have any ideas for good sources of protein that are not high in fats and are not from an animal source?

My dr. suggested a protein shake...some are yucky tasting so can be expensive to find the right one for you.

Most protein shakes are whey or casein based, both of which are animal derived. You can find rice, pea, and soy protein powders at health stores, but I prefer real food to powders.

Beans are definitely your best bet for low fat non-animal protein. Whole grains are often overlooked, but pack quite a bit of protein as well.

My favorite sources would be nuts and seeds, but they are high in fat. It is, however, the kind of fats that are good for you. So as long as you don't eat too many calories worth nuts/seeds are a great non-animal protein source.

Soy is going to be your best bet, along with nuts of all stripes. If you can, see if a local store has the Maya Nut (follow link for nutritional info) in-stock or available for special order. They're just starting to export it and it is extremely low fat, has a pretty good protein/calorie ratio, and is a totally renewable, widespread food source for South America.

Some of frozen veggie burgers are pretty high in protein if you don't mind processed food. Not sure which are vegan, but there are many, many vegetarian ones.

The hummus idea is great ... super versatile and super easy to make yourself. Plus, you can make it with any bean (chickpeas is traditional but white beans, black beans, and lentils all work great)

Portabella mushrooms are a good source of protein. Plus their one of the few plant sources that provide the same levels of idodine and B vitamins found in red meat from what I understand.

Quinoa (pronounced keen-wah). It is a great source of protein (7g per serving). It is a good tasting grain to add to any of your meals in place of rice, etc. Be sure to rinse it before cooking. I hope you enjoy trying it. My family loves it!
