It's a Very Low Calorie, Low Carb Ketogenic Diet. You basically eat 500 calories aday of real/whole foods. No refined or highly processed foods & no high carbs, especially sugar. This part is called Phase 2 & last from 23 betwen to 43 days. During this time you also take between 125 IU to 250 IU of hCG per day (I took around 150 IU's via IM injections).
The hCG Protocol Diet consist of a minimum 40g of complete high quality protein & a max of 60g of complex net carbs. This is to protect your internal organs (namely your heart muscle) & keep you in ketosis.
These foods can be made up of either 100g of fat free meat, fish or cottage cheese, 1 egg & 3 egg whites or ISOLATE protein Powders (latter 3 choices suitable for vegetarians).
Your (upto) 60g of net carbs should be made up of citrus fruits: (oranges, grapefruits & lemons etc), pome fruits: (apples & pears) & berries: (strawberries, raspberries & blackberries etc). Tropical fruits should be avoided during this time because things like bananas, pineaples & mangos etc are too sweet & will spike your blood sugar levels.
The vegetables you're allowed to eat are also very low carb foods, so basically ALOT of salads, green & leafy vegetables. You are also allowed Grissini breadsticks & Melba toast. When deciding what to eat check out their carb & GI levels first.
After the 23/43 days are up your body will be in a very delicate state & just waiting to backlash/rebound. It will be sending you every signal it has to make you binge. So you will HAVE TO give it AT LEAST 3 weeks to settle or YOU WILL gain all the weight back. This stage is called Phase 3 & you'll need to STAY in ketosis on a low carb diet during this time, something like South Beach or Atkins.
You however now will be able to eat more food, fruits & fats, such as avocados, olive oil, cream, cheeses & nuts. But you must still stay under 60g of complex net carbs. Your main goal during Phase 3 is to stabilize.
A round last a minimum of 10 weeks & consist of basically 3 phases. Phase 2, phase 3 & phase 4. Phase 1 is just detoxing & doesn't need to be done. Phase 2 is when you load & do the VLCD, Phase 3 is the Low Carb stabilizing diet, & phase 4 is when you slowly start to increase your carbs until you can eat normally again.
I agree the hCG Protocol diet does work, but for me I personally found it a very hard diet to do. I lost 24 lbs in 32 days & it probably would of been more but I found myself constantly cheating every week. The key is to make sure you getinto ketosis the first week. I also found that if you're prone to depression being on a VLCD can trigger it.
I would recommend only doing 23 day rounds. This is because after the first 3 weeks you WILL start to stall & weight loss will slow down to around only 3 lbs loss a week. The reason for this is because you will have used up all your glycogen (stored carbs) stores & will now be burning pure fat (& a little muscle).
The only problem with that is the body is only able to burn 2-3 pounds of fat per week, anything over that has been GLYCOGEN stores (ie sugar, water & muscles). After the first 3 weeks though, you WILL be losing ALOT inches & fat, you will no doubt be use to & expecting to see the scales move down every day & seeing the stalls that will happen will feel very discouraging indeed.
Again I stress you MUST do Phase 3 after you've finished Phase 2. I didn't do it properly (ie, I ate carbs) which triggered a binge in me that made me gain 30 lbs back in under 2 weeks!!!
