Is there really any evidence that eating later at night causes you to be fatter??

I am finding that im more hungry at night time around 8 to 10pm, during the day im fine. Some say not to eat after a certain time as your body can not digest the foods so well and it is stored more so as fat. As your not moving about as much etc etc. Others have told me that this is a myth and in fact it makes no difference when you eat with regard to whether it is stored as fats. Anyone shed any light on this?

I personally don't think it matters as far as weight loss is concerned what time you eat. Though it might matter for someone who is maintaining as they will be eating more calories than a dieter.

I do think however that if someone dieting leaves it too late they're more prone to being ravenous by the time we finally eat & end up binging.

I have the same thing, and it's bad because I won't eat until later in the day but then am RAVENOUS around 9 pm, at which point i gorge, and then am not hungry the next morning, and the cycle continues (this also contributes to less-than-fun morning weigh-ins!!)

Hi . I have just signed on to this a few min ago and this is my first post. I saw your question and wanted to answer before i even finished going further into this site.I am a Nurse Practitioner and help patients with individualized diet programs. I recently gained weight myself, but i know why and is my fault, but wanted to get on here to talk to others for support and get ideas for recipe's and exercise. I gained almost 30 lbs in the past 4-5 months, and it is bc of eating too late. If you eat between 8 and 10pm when you are hungry like you stated and stayed up until 2 or 3 am, then it would be better. but ..eating this late and going to bed within a few hours afterwards is only going to add pounds. as we get older, our metabolism slows down, but also our digestive system slows down. When you eat during the day, lunch for example, you are moving around in some way after u eat until you eat dinner, so those calories and fat are being burned off even if you are more sedentary. When you eat late, then go to sleep, your body is at complete rest with little movement over those 8 hours or so and the food cannot digest quickly and will tend to hold on to the calories and fat longer, causing more to be absorbed and stored. Are you really hungry at this time if you have already eaten earlier or do u just feel hungry? Acid Reflux can sometimes be the cause of this hunger feeling at night and a little zantac or prilosec does wonders. What time and what kind of food are u eating during the day? JB

Doctors advise that you shouldn't eat anything for the three hours before you go to bed. This is because your system, as it is sleeping, does less to digest and process the food we eat late at night properly. As such, people who eat late at night will be more prone to problems like acid reflux, adult onset athsma, sleep apnea and diabetes. It does more to your system than one would think. Easy fixes to late night hunger are things like fat free Jell-o, it has very few calories and makes you feel full. It also combats a sweet tooth. Also try brushing your teeth; most people don't like to eat right after they brush their teeth because nothing tastes right.
Drink a full glass of sodium free sparkling water. I get lemon flavored and it gives you the same full feeling as a soda.

I read once ( I cant remember where i was) that it was a myth that eating before bed made you fatter. Is there any hard scientific proof to back it actually does effect your weight gain? Im wondering if its a myth.

YES, eating late at night DOES cause one to gain extra pounds. How do I know? Because thats what I did to try to gain weight. No matter how much I ate 2 yrs ago, I couldnt gain the weight I wanted to. Then I somehow developed an apetite that hit me approx. 3-4 hrs before bed. Even though Id only eat an apple with a couple of nuts, I gained weight pretty easily.
You should avoid eating close to bedtime because whatever you eat, isnt gonna be burned off. Your body will hold onto it until you wake up and it'll probably have converted it into stored energy aka fat.

Hi Jbutler! I'm really interested in what you said. I read somewhere & always thought that slow digestion was a good thing because energy is released more slowly so you don't have any insulin spikes, which gives the food more opertunity to be burned instead of stored, and also helping you to feel fuller for longer???

Could you maybe give some info of the difference between that & the type of digestion you're referring to? Smile

Um actually...no, you won't gain more fat by eating later at night. Humans don't digest their food within three hours anyway, so even if you stop eating well before you go to bed, you're still working on the calories you consumed looooong before that.

You don't need the energy if you're heading straight off to bed, but if you're genuinely hungry, it won't hamper your weight loss progress to eat something healthy. In fact, since you're not going to be eating for another 8+ hours, it can be a good idea for some people.

Unless you tend to have more trouble making healthy choices when you're tired, or you don't feel well if you sleep with food in your stomach, there's no reason to stop yourself from having a small snack before bed if you're hungry.

I absolutely agree with Katana! I myself like to have a protein shake made with warm (never hot) milk before bed, & when I was a child it use to be warm milk or hot chocolate.
