I'm looking for FS members who use NikePlus to record their miles (walking or running). I'd like to start a Nike Challenge and invite all FS members that use an iPod and the NikePlus system to join. Anyone out there interested?

Unfortunately, I no longer can wear nike shoes or run but it looks way cool. I can see how cool this would be. I'm a pedometer wearer (even when I not being a good girl) and I load my info up to the walkingspree website. I know this has helped my motivation.

You don't need to wear Nike shoes or run, if you already have an iPod, you just buy the kit that comes with a receiver for the iPod and a sensor that you can put in a pouch tied to your shoe laces. There are 1000's of Nike challenges posted on
www.nikeplus.com
and they're very motivational. When my kids used to live near me, we always held an Annual Mother's Day Run, now we can still do it, we just post a private challenge run whenever it's convenient on that day and see who the winner is. I know you didn't ask but this year I AM THE WINNER!!! Hard to believe at 53 I can run faster than my 33 year old and my 30 year old! My daughter and I are 563 miles apart - we started a walking challenge to see where we would meet in the middle - I'm betting that I'll probably go around 360 miles to her 200. It's a lot of fun. There are team challenges like run for your favorite major league baseball team, your favorite type of music, your state, etc.

Interesting. I've never been able to wear Nike sneakers for running but I've thought about getting the receiver in the past and then totally forgot about it till I read this thread. I would consider getting it for sure. I've also thought about getting a regular pedometer. Some of them keep track of weeks of workouts. Maybe I don't totally get the idea, but seems like you wouldn't necessarily need the gadget, just any old pedometer? Correct me if I'm wrong. THough it looks like the sensor itself is about $22 on Amazon, which is definitely cheaper than the pedometers I was looking at.

As I understand the nike+ acts like a pedometer itself as long as you have the sensor on. Since I don't have one, I'm almost as clueless as you are. I use a omron hj-720it pedometer for my tracking and it is pretty cool in and of itself. I always thought the nike+ was just for runners so I'm getting educated today, too. I care about both aerobic and non-aerobic steps so I wear my pedometer constantly and I'm always trying to get those 10,000 steps a day. I have days were I hit those without aerobic steps. I wonder how the nike+ handles that?

It probably wouldn't do so good in that application, and it doesn't record your steps like a pedometer does. Before I got the nike system I tried a pedometer and didn't have much luck with it, but I think they've come a long way. I just use it when I know I'm going for a walk or a run, but don't use it on a continuous basis. Sounds like your pedometer is doing the trick for you. I used to run all the time, but now I have a bad knee that will need to be replaced soon, so I do a lot more walking. It keeps track of your 'average' pace so I didn't want my pace to go down by using it for walks, but eventually --that will be all I can do. It also tells you your calories burned because you program in your weight.

The nike+ kit (sensor and receiver) is $30.00. Around where I live they sell them at Target and Dick's Sporting Goods. It must be used with an iPod nano. If you don't already have one of those, they usually run around $149.00 so it really increases the cost, but if you've got one it's pretty inexpensive. Check our the demo on
www.nikeplus.com
It keeps records of your runs and everytime you plug it in it automatically posts your miles to all your Nike challenges. We have a lot of people at work who have them, and we create a lot of challenges amongst ourselves and set up teams, and really get in the miles trying to win.

Hmm. Ok, I don't have a nano. I have a regular iPod. From what I have read, even the expensive pedometers aren't great at keeping track of distance so maybe this would be better in that regard. Thanks for the info!

I have a Nike+ and don't have Nike shoes so I just put it under the tongue of my shoe and it works for me but I only walk. I am up for a challenge! Should we have one for walkers and one for runners?

I went to the Nike website, and you can buy just the sensor for $19 and pair it with an iPod touch, which is what I have. I am thinking about it...

Sorry I've been gone awhile. I started a challenge on Nike+ for 90 days, it's called Fat Secret Members Challenge. Please go to the Nike running site and join! We've got to move it to lose it. See you there!

Anyone using the Fitbit Flex or similar devices?
I have a bodymedia fit and love it. It really helps keep you motivated and focused. It does allow you to sync with a heart rate monitor, but I find it has been a good tool regardless.
