4-6 mph. And I would suggest not going by miles, but time. The best way to lose fat is to run for extended periods. Running too fast, too strenuously, or for too short a time is anaerobic exercise as opposed to aerobic, and won't lose you fat as much as gain you muscle. (If you are going for muscle, I suggest cutting running out of your routine, as it breaks down muscle tissue in the legs.)

You'll burn 100 calories for every mile. It doesn't matter if you walk it or run it... it's 100 calories either way. So if you can run... go for it. Otherwise walking is just as good. It just takes a little longer. Also be sure to have water with you to keep you hydrated, or a sports drink if you're going more than 5 miles.

If I walk 4.0 miles per hour which is very do-able at 267 lbs according to the "calories burned calculator" on the Fit for Life website, http://www.liftforlife.com/caloriesburnedcalculator.htm I burn about 485 calories. Does this sound about right to everyone?

That probably is right. You can use the diet/exercise calendar here on the FS website also. It will tell you how many calories you burn.

evalicious,

weight loss/gain is an easy formal... cals in = cals out.

as far as speed or duration its really irrelevant... Personal I do very short but very intense interval training... Its been deemed as very efficient and effective. I would recomend a book called "body for life"

Well, if "used to" was a long time ago, your body isn't going to lose weight as easily as it did when you were in your early 20s. For me, if I spent a few days eating salads when I was in my 20s I could drop 5 pounds in less than a week but now at 34 it takes a LOT more effort to move the scale even 1 lb.

I will second vivid. Interval training has been shown to be more effective than slogging along at a set pace. It also makes the workout seem to go much faster. And, over the workout, you're able to keep your average heart rate higher, because you're building in rest periods, which means you're burning more cals.

A good article on interval training: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/03/fashion/03Fitness.html

The other thing is that research has shown that working out alone is not enough. You need to change your diet. I am finding this out the hard way myself.
