Came across a great site at http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

That teaches beginners how to build up by doing 20 - 30 minute sessions 3 times a week until they are able to run 5k. I'm hoping to give it ago when I get into ONEderland. As am currently still over 200+ lbs.

Why wait? I've run four 5Ks with weights ranging from around 260-230. Training for a 5K is a great way to get yourself into ONEderland. Oh, and you don't need to run the whole thing when you're starting out. There are always people that walk the entire 5K.

I did the Couch to 5k program shortly after I joined fatsecret (learned about it on here, too). I was around 220 lbs when I started and had never been a runner, ever! I graduated in the middle of March and have kept up with running. It does wonders for the butt and legs, not to mention your heart.

It wasn't easy but it wasn't impossible. Some people repeat weeks if they can't make the progression. I just kept telling myself to give the next session a try, even when I thought I wouldn't be able to do it. I kept surprising myself because I was able to do it.

I recommend running outside if you can. It's much better than the treadmill. It was the height of winter here when I started but I just dressed in layers and avoided days when it was too slippery. If I could do it, you can too!

IT NEVER GETS EASIER - YOU JUST GET BETTER.

Wow! You have made amazing progress! Congratulations on all you have already accomplished! I never was a runner before but decided to challenge myself this year by training for a sprint triathlon which is 1/2 mile swim, 13 mi bike and 3.2 mi run (5K). I could barely run a mile at first and now can run 4. I got there by just starting out and trying to set my distances a little further each time. I would often walk for a minute in between and then keep going. After a while I no longer had to walk. I have heard that is a good program to try, or just try that on your own. Running has really helped slim me down. I run outside when it's nice but have been on the treadmill all winter long. Nothing gets me as sweaty as a run, so I know it is a great workout. Set your goal like 1 mile at first and see how long it takes you, including if you need to walk a little in there and then keep trying to beat that time or distance and you will increase your ablity little by little.

I have been invited to join a friend to train for a 5 K in march here. I have never ran other than little sprints. I have never walked for that long either. I am planning on doing it. This is going to be so hard; but a great experience for me and my weight loss plans.

Eventually I want to be a healthy weight; and that means leaving a whole person behind.

Hi everyone! I actually decided to try & do the Couch to 5k programme after all, even tho I'm still not under 200 lbs yet. And I've learned of another wonderful site that is a great tool for planning out your walks or runs: http://www.mapmyrun.com. You can map out your route with it & it will show you & tell you how many miles your journey will be.

I have done the program and it's great! Just remember not to push too fast, if you need to repeat a week, do. I actually ran my first 5k in September and it was so awesome! I sprained my ankle in November and stopped running, oops. I'm planning on returning to the C25K program this week.

I started just today! I did awful! But I FEEL SO GOOD I don't care that I did awful! (I think I will probably be on the first week for a couple weeks.) I am doing mine with this wonderful Podcast called "Podrunner" -it's music that keeps your run up to pace - no checking watches or anything like that. I found that I just couldn't handle the running all the way through - but I did my best and when I got home I felt (and still feel) so GREAT!

Yeah I am takin a break today I think - I am a bit sore. The bicycle, baseball AND the walk/run was a bit to much for one thing. (Though it's just me to nose-dive into things.)

However, even being sore I feel better than I normally do so I'll be back to it soon. I even signed up for our local 5K March for Babies! (PLUS - my husband promised me a brand new IPod Nano if I manage to learn to run "more than once around the block..." He's nervous about the whole thing because he's afraid I'll trash my knees.

I hope everyone that's been doing this programme is doing well & making progress.

Myself, after reaching week 7 of the couch to 5k plan & now able to jog for a full 25 mins for the first time in my life. I come to find that I have been jogging all wrong & not using the proper stride and posture.

I've been leaning forward instead of keeping my back straight, running on the ball of my feet when I should be landing on the middle & also found out that my strides have been far too short as they should be two feets apart.

This probably explains why jogging has been feeling so hard for me. Tomorrow I will try & put these new techniques into action.

Just a note of encouragement to all of you doing the Couch to 5k. It's a great program! I did it a couple of years ago and it was the on the best things I ever did for my health. I was depressed, 185 pounds and a couch potato with no muscles and no endurance. I couldn't even do the first week of the program, so I modified it to start with just 30 seconds of running for 2-3 minutes of walking. I went at a snails pace, but I eventually finished the program but continued to increase my running. It changed my whole life. I'm 50 pounds thinner (mainly from diet change, not the running alone) and I make healthier choices and have fallen in love with endurance sports!
I wish you all the best! You can do it!!!
