Congrats on your loss! I've heard good things about Sibutramin & it's (as far as I know) 1 of only 2 meds that can be prescribed by a doctor over here (UK).

I remember when I started dieting. After a few weeks I went to my doctor & was given 2 options for meds I could start. Sibutramin & Xenical, I wanted Sibutramin but because I had high blood pressure at the time I wasn't allowed so I was put on Xenical instead.

I do wonder tho (unlike Xenical) Sibutramin being an appetite suppressant how does the body adapt once it is stopped?

Years ago I was prescribed Dexfenfluramine/fen-fen (now known to cause heart damage) for a short period of time & when I stopped my body rebounded big time.

Sometimes you need a little kick starter. This sounds similar to a pill I am taking over-the-counter called Alli. It works in the same way, but is 1/2 the dosage. I tried to get a prescription from my doctor, but she informed me that she wasn't the kind of doctor that encouraged diet pills... bummer.

Anyway, seems like you are taking your doctor's advice and doing a great job so far! Congratulations on all the weight loss so far, and don't let the anti-medication people get you down Smile

Diet pills are foolish and Big Pharm is a business. Sorry if it's not what you want to hear, but I just don't get this quick fix, can't-do-it-without-drugs attitude that is so prevalent today (you crazy kids).

Despite what we'd like to believe, we simply don't know enough about chemicals or the human body to know that we are entirely safe pumping ourselves with compounds unless it's absolutely necessary for medical treatment.

I'm not just blowing hot air here. I have a degree that focused, at least in part, on this topic. I congratulate you on your results, but you may want to consider losing weight in a more natural (albeit more time-consuming) manner.

i'm using alli aswell im not dropping weight like crazy which is good, i know that it wont work without me eating healthily and exercising so as far as i see it it's just helping me along the way.

From what's been explained to me Alli is 1/2 strength Xenical. The way these medications work is that they bind a substantial portion of the fat you eat so that it is not absorbed by your body for nutrition, but simply 'passed'. The only way to really stay away from the unfortunate side effects is not to eat that much fat. Selina, since you're a vegetarian that may be why it doesn't effect you as badly (a gross oversimplification, but let's roll with it).

However, I have neither the need or the want to shoot olive oil out of my ***. So I think I'll just go about dieting the old fashioned way. Wink

Im on FSD and have been using Alli for two weeks and have not even come close to having any of the treatment effects they say can happen when using this pill. Also you dont lose extreme amounts of weight with it. Im going to school for nursing so i am very familiar with this pill. Its not unhealty in fact it contains olestra wich at one time was actually used in low fat chips here in the U.S. It doesnt supress your appetite like non FDA approved diet pills. It's not a quick fix by any means. If you already live a low fat/low cal lifestyle you shouldnt have any treatment effects at all.

My question is are the short term results worth the long term damage this can do to your body? I've lost 38 pounds in about 6 months the old fashioned way, eating healthy and exercising my bottom off literally. I'm just anti-pills in general not just weight loss pills. I had a relative drop dead in a doctor's office after he gave her some "sample pills" You know the ones the pharmacy co gives to doctor to give to patients to get them hooked and get filthy rich. OOPS, I'm talking too much.

Please please please don't assume that Alli/Xenical in anyway stops people from losing weight the old fashioned way. I worked my a*s off for a whole year to get to where I am & I don't even take my xenical at every meal or even every day. I personally only take it if I'm eating over 10g of fat per meal. Otherwise I don't really bother with it. It was bloody hard work to lose all the weight I have & I'm still not done yet!

Plus Alli/Xenical unlike other diet pills out there doesn't suppress your appetite. So apart from abit of undigested fat passing through you it doesn't make it any the less harder to lose weight at all.

The horror stories only apply to people who decide to gorge themselves on a whole lot of fat while taking this med. This med is for people on a Low fat diet.

Being from the UK I get my meds for free but because of this my doctor says once I come out of the obese catagorie and enter just being over weight I wont qualify for Xenical anymore & it will be stopped. Then I will have the choice of buying Alli or just carrying on the way I always have but without them.

I think you have every right to do your plan how you see fit..I think most of us have been so enundated with horror stories of side effects and damage by all kinds of diet pills that it makes us a little testy maybe about them..I am glad this is working for you..You seem to be doing a well balanced plan..I hope it turns out great..

This is going to be long post, and for that I'm sorry.
But yall seem to be only looking at two aspects of this tablet, the weightloss and the brown cords. These tablets have a lot of a side affect and there can be Other Major Problems.

This is my own personal experience with these.
Please be careful when deciding what diet aid you're going to use.

I was prescribed Sibutrimin by my Doctor, who told me that they would help me lose weight quickly but they could also raise blood pressure.
Heart issues run in my family, but I thought ok, it might NOT raise my blood pressure I might be ok. The doctor said that 5 pounds weight loss can take 15 pounds of pressure off my knees. I couldnt walk at the time so I was definately up for it. I wanted to get up and go!

The first month was fine on low dosage tablets, I lost 6 pounds. The doctor told me I was doing great and that he would like me to lose at least 4 pounds a month from then on.
The second month, I was prescribed a slightly higher dosage as is the norm.
This is where the fun starts... I was laid up with a cold and spent about a week in bed and because I wanted it so badly after I got over that cold, I tried to exercising and ended up staying in bed for 3 days at a time because I overworked my knee and couldnt stand up again. In total I spent over ten days in bed, I ate whatever food my daughter or husband brought me (while I was laid up), almost always leaving something on my plate as I just didnt feel that hungry. In the meantime, I'd noticed my chest was starting to hurt a bit and I felt the need to have a really big burp (but couldnt) and a bit heartburn as well. I was also extremely constipated.
I went to the Doctor for the monthly visit for weight and blood pressure check. I happily stepped on the scale, thinking I had lost weight. I had Gained 4 pounds! He was extremely angry at me and told me "If you dont take this seriously, why should I?" He told me I shouldnt have eaten as much while in bed and told me off for it. He said I needed get my heartrate up to 100 or more to lose weight. Then he raked me over the coals, saying that he should send me "to some country suffering from famine for two months so that when I got back no one would recognize me for all the weight I'd lost" along with a few other extremely harsh comments.
Seething, I told him my other symptoms. Chest pain, the need to have a huge mansize burp that any Redneck would be Extremely Proud of (including me!), the heartburn and having trouble going. He prescribed something for indigestion and something else for the not going, failing to tell me how to take them. (I endedup reading the boxes). However, right before I left I reminded him of the second reason I was there- (The first, being to get weighed) to get my blood pressure taken. He flat out refused, saying "No, you're fine. I'll check it next month IF you lose weight".
Yes, I was angry, not only at him for his attitude, and some of the things he'd said, Not doing His job by not taking my blood pressure when he Knew how worried was about it, but also at me for being so very stupid that I didnt even know that when laid up in bed, that you're not supposed to eat as much! Even though I had gained weight I wasnt eating as much as before.
The third month - I finally got to toiletting due to one of the new meds he gave me. I was taking the indigestion tablets before I drank or ate Anything including my tablets. I was eating a lot less. My chest is much worse and now my heart feels like its beating out of my chest. I can barely eat now because it hurts so bad. I'm trying to move a bit more but my chest is hurting all the time. A few days later even drinking water was making my chest worse, during the weekend I had woken several times during the night because of the pain. I had even woken because my heart was pounding (I hadnt even had a bad dream!! I dont think I was dreaming at all!) On Sunday, I hurt so bad I didnt even take my tablets (any of them, 2 different painkillers, sibutrimin, indigestion.), I knew I needed to eat at least once that day so I cooked a meal of leftover mashed potatoes and a frozen chicken breast each, apologizing to hubby that Im sorry it wasnt much, but I just didnt feel up to being upright. I could only eat half the chicken breast and two bites of the potatoes before I had to stop. My gosh, I thought I was dying. I had been checking my pulse at regular intervals for the last week, it never seemed to get below 130. That night I went to bed early, 20 minutes after laying down and resting I took it again, it was 180!
The next morning an ambulance came for me, when they got here, my blood pressure was up and my heartrate was 181. So they took me. I spent the day in the emergency room having an EKG and a few other tests because I had symptoms of a possible cardiac event. I told them all the meds I was on and they looked specifically at the Sibutrimin. I was suffering most of the side affects of them! They sent me home with a higher dose of indigestion tabs. They helped a little for a couple days but the symptoms came back just as strong if not stronger. That Friday, I stopped Sibutrimin on my own. I couldnt eat, I couldnt drink. I hurt so bad I could barely stay out of bed, I had to stop several times on the way to restroom which is less that 6 feet away from my bedroom door.
Tuesday, My husband made an emergency appointment for me at the Doctor's. I saw a different doctor. I told her everything that happened. She took my blood pressure, it was still up significantly (her words). My pulse was 160. I'd lost 11 pounds. She officially took me off Sibutrimin and one of my painkillers. She told me to come back when I felt myself again (i'm thinking it might be next week),
Since coming off them almost a month ago, I've been feeling better and better and we've even gone on holiday to see our other daughter who works in France for a week.
I've only gained 6 pounds and have now lost 3 of those on my own. I'm very proud of myself for that!
