FEELING GREAT CHALLENGE-WEEK 2

VISUALIZE YOUR GOALS

Last week, we sat down and thought about our goals. These goals will hopefully give us a more concrete idea of where we want to go in our lives.
This week, I want you to try and visualize each goal. When you say a goal, what picture comes to mind? A picture is worth a thousand words and they ‘talk’ to us more loudly than just written words.
Being able to visualize our goals will help us stay more focused on reaching our targets. So, the assignment for this week is:

CREATE A VISUAL BOARD OF YOUR GOALS.

Find pictures that best represent your goals and make a collage. (I don’t want this challenge to consume too much time or money so use whatever material you can. You can have a cork board, poster board or even just regular photocopier paper. ) Use images that motivate you and keep you inspired.

Go through your old albums, maybe even ask family members for pictures of you, look through magazines or on the internet. You may have photos of you which remind you of the size you want to be again. It could be you having fun in happier times. There could be an image in a magazine that helps you visualize what you would like your body to look like.

Also use pictures that represent rewards to you. For example, I have a picture that an advert for sexy lingerie and shows a woman’s torso. She is wearing a sexy bra and panties and has a flat stomach. My goal is to get a flatter stomach, (though I am realistic enough to know I will never have a stomach like hers) and then I plan to buy myself that exact same underwear as a reward.

You could reward yourself with a romantic dinner for two. A reward could be a medal for entering a race, a pretty new dress you have seen online, a spa treatment. Happy smiling children could be your reward (the ones you have or the ones you want!!) Be creative.
You can use your written goals and scatter them around with the pictures or you can leave it just full of images.

You can use only one picture that envelopes everything you wish to accomplish or you can create an album of visual goals. This project is all about you and what makes you motivated.

If you can share you pics on the board, that would be great, otherwise, please post a description of your board and what the images represent to you.

BUDDY CHALLENGE: Discuss with your buddy any apprehensions or problems you have faced so far in doing the project. Remember your buddy is your support system, so please utilize them whenever you have any issues.

greeat idea, CL! It occurred to me that we can even use something as simple as a powerpoint slide...get images and words from the internet, or use your own digital photos (for non-digital ones, you'd need to scan and import those in)...but powerpoint is so versatile, I think it'd make a great visual board. I'm gonna try that out.

O8, that is an excellent idea to use a slideshow on your computer. I might even try that myself, in addition to the message board visual I am creating. Double motivation is good for me!

I just wanted to share my feelings on this project because I just went into the basement to search through the photo albums for motivating pictures.

I felt depressed looking for my pictures, because first of all, I realized that I havent really had many pictures of myself taken. Being on the large side and not having sharp features has made me conscious of my looks over the years. I love taking photos but never of myself. So now I dont really have a lot of pics to go by.

Secondly, the pictures I do have seem to be mostly of me with large baggy, ill fitting clothes, as if I am trying to conceal my thunder thighs by wearing loose clothing that in fact makes me look even larger than I really am. Was I really that selfconcious?

There are a few pics of me looking happy. As I studied those pics, I realized that those times were when I was being myself. The pics that show me being the happiest were around the time I got married, when I was still my own person. And then after marriage, I stopped being myself as I tried to fit into assigned roles, wife, mother, daughter in law. The way I styled my hair, the way I dressed, even the color lipstick I wore was dictated to me. So these pictures reflect an image others had for me.

Boy that was heart wrenching, even though I was the one who set this project! But the way to get over depression is to become proactive about it.

So, I am adding some goals to my list:

Right now goals-

-To take pictures of myself regularly.(I am thinking of adding a weekly reminder like the 'weigh in now' onto my desktop saying 'have you taken your pic this week?'Wink

-To start developing an image for myself, created by me for me and my happiness, not others.

Short term goals-

-To build up a wardrobe that represents who I am and what I feel like. No more procrastinating over cost. If I like it, it looks good and it fits..buy it!

Long term goals-

-To get others to accept me just the way I am and the way I want to be, instead of trying to please them all the time.

CL, I sympathize and feel similar about my old pictures---there are just a few where I can say I am happy with the picture (I look happy in those, but they are not my "proud moments" enough for me to put them on a visual board). Hence, I'm going with a different idea---I have made a board based on my goals of what I want the future to look like---even though there's not a single picture of me in it!

I'm going to post it here in the next message---be warned--it's a large file!!

Here is my visual board with help in figuring out how to change the file format from 08willbegreat! Some of the goals are not worded exactly the same as my goal list. Just variations on a theme, I guess.

Very Happy

Hi Everyone. Wowowwwwww these boards are amazing. I want to make one too. I wish I had some computer know how here to put it together- if anyone has any simple steps please pass them on. I have to say this challenge is a challenge. I am like caged liberty...for the last few years I've been hiding from the camera. I will be putting something together in a goal format but being comfortable enough with myself to have photos taken is number one.

Firstly, I just want to say that I can relate to the not wanting pictures taken... I have very few of me over the last 10 years, which is quite sad really as we can never replace those moments. Crying or Very sad

I guess in the past I have always taken the photo's... a good excuse to stay out of them! Alas, I'm getting a bit better... but there's still a way to go before I will be completely happy having my photo taken. Rolling Eyes

Well, I must say these motivation boards are amazing... so great work everyone!! Cool I've had great fun doing mine on and off today. I decided to also add a picture of me August 2007... which was the photo that inspired me to start this journey of a new self-discovery. I thought this would also act as a reminder of the progress I've made to date and encourage me to NEVER go back to those unhappy days.

So here's my board...

I just wanted to say that I made my board with PowerPoint... then afterwards saved it in JPEG format, by changing the file format in the drop down menu when the SAVE AS box came up.

I put all the files I wanted to use in one folder... after googling images around the web. If you have PowerPoint, you can then open a PowerPoint presentation and from the top left hand toolbar select things like INSERT > FROM FILE, navigate to the FOLDER where the picture is saved, click on it and select INSERT.

You can then drag the corners of pictures to resize them... or move the pictures around the page.

You can also insert text boxes from the INSERT menu, or alternatively things like Auto-Shape by selecting INSERT > PICTURE > AUTO SHAPES... then drag out your shape to the size you want it.

You can add colours to these boxes by RIGHT-Clicking on the text box or auto-shape, then selecting FORMAT AUTO-SHAPE or FORMAT TEXT BOX depending on the one you want to style. This opens a little box with tabs along the top - COLORS & LINES is the one used to style the boxes.

FILL Color - you can choose the colour you want the background of the box.

LINE Color - you can use to add borders to the boxes and also select the thickness of the border line.

If you haven't got MicroSoft PowerPoint, there is a free program called Open Office that you can download which contains similar programs contained in the Microsoft Office Suite - including "Presentations"... a take off of Powerpoint. So this might be useful for anyone that wants to have a play around. Very Happy

Wow, I didnt realize what artistic, talented and obviously smart people you all are!!

I am an ex-computer programmer but I dont think I would have ever explored using any software to do the visual board.

Excellent job everyone! God..I better start on mine!

So, I missed week one because of a death in the family. Should I go back to week one and create my list of goals, and then create a board?

hi artistrl, first of all, I want to offer my condolences on the recent death in your family. I hope you have managed to get through that tough time ok.

The first week was to set goals and the second week is to visualize them. Ideally, if you make your goals you will be able to visualize them better. However, this challenge is not about making you panic or stressed out so please feel free to do whatever will be most convenient for you.

Also, making an online board is not necessary. I want to reiterate this to everyone doing the challenge. PLEASE make the visual board that is the easiest for you. If you are not computer inclined, it does not matter...make anything that will help remind you every day of your goals.

Also want to mention, for those people who are SOMEWHAT computer inclined, you could do the collage by hand and then just take a digital photo of it and post that like you would any other photo! I think that's what I'll probably do simply for time's sake - I can bring stuff to make it at work and then just photo and upload at home.

I am an artist and it is killing me to not put up a gorgeous board with photos and color. I hope to put this on my summer to do iist. I am actually doing well to get this posted. I am leaving for a week to NY with the kids tomorrow and the list is very long of things to get ready.

First on the list

-don't sweat the small things in life... the litte things that don't matter

-be good to myself and those i love

-be proud of myself and my accomplishments

-don't measure myself by what gets done on a to-do list

-choose good healthy food, poeple, and ways to spend time

-find a way to enjoy exercise

-be part of family photos

My one favorite photo of myself was taken when I was 20. I am 43 now and I think I want to have a photo taken that gives me the same feeling when I look at it. I felt beautiful, young, smart and healthy. All my photos lately have looked a bit like a woman whose been through the wringer...I don't want to be her.

This is such a great challenge - thanks for organising it, Nisa! The Visual Boards are SO motivating, and although I was a bit apprehensive about putting my own together, it was actually great fun!

Here's mine! Very Happy

stmueller, thanks for pointing out the digital photo idea. I actually had that in mind when I said post pics of your boards but having it written out makes it more clear.

Sharonfriz, thanks for taking the time to write down a few things about your goals. I can appreciate the effort involved in planning and carrying out a family vacation. I will give you an extension on your homework assignment, but please do try to do it because firstly, it is a lot of fun and second of all, it will help to serve as a daily reminder to you as to why you are making all the effort with your dieting and exercising.

Everyone else who has posted their boards, I would like to offer a suggestion. As I recall people having much longer lists in challenge 1, if you feel like it..make another board. You should not be limited because of limited space on your software program. You could make board for each type of goal, eg. one board for short term goals, one for long term etc..This is just an idea if you wish to take it up.
