Hi, I have arthritis in my knees, a back bad and I am obese that is why I joined, I need some help on what sort of exercise I could do, I find it hard walking and standing for long periods, anyone have any suggestions.

Swimming! It's an amazing workout that is usually over looked. It is definitely a great place to start. Smile Best of luck!

With the arthritis, maybe also some "range of motion" movements - move every major joint slowly through it's range of motion a couple of times a day.

Move Smile the best way to keep arthritis at bay is to keep on moving. Any way that is comfortable for you. Start small & try to increase the length of your choosen activity. You will feel that you will get stronger & more mobile in time. Smile

I had the beginnings of arthritis and decided, no way! So, i stopped all processed foods, and only eat healthy real naturally raised / grown foods.
I also worked out with a trainer for 1/2 hour once a week on strength training. then I did the routine myself 2 x's a week at the gym. My bone density has increased and I now only get small flair ups in my toes and my thumb. Knees are now fine and of course losing the extra weight helped.
I also used a cream "Traumeel" all natural and it's great.
You can do resistance training at home with no equipment.
If it is a plant, eat it, if it comes from a plant, don't!

I'll chime in on swimming. Also consider stationary bikes. Maybe later a "real" bicycle. Smile
Another thing is strength training. Go full force on as many machines as your ailments allow, and go lower impact on those that cause pain. Most times, it's important to not skip any machines completely, as your joints most likely need some movement to get better. Just start low and work your way from there.

I go to a water fit class 3 times weekly and it is good-and recently I joined a walking group-both activities are done at my own speed and intensity. Good luck.

I'm a big fan of a recumbent bike. Used it for physical therapy after a knee replacement and it's great for a good workout. Can go as slow or fast as you please. And no stress on the knees. I too have arthur, a lousy back and a bum knee. There are lots of ways to workout. Would love to swim, but the closest pool is 20 miles away.

I feel your pain in the same boat. Research the web for physical therapy moves for arthritis as well as bad knees & back. I have also went to a chiropractor that helped to realign my spine & fixed my pain flare ups. I also use an elliptical & stationary bike. Strength training moves like squats, lunges, wall squats, high leg raises, calve raises, are just some of the PT exercises I was told to do after my knee surgery. I use to love to go walking on the local trails & tracks but haven't been able to since my knee & foot surgeries but these exercises have helped me to adjust & able to stay on my feet longer. I was over 400 lbs when I started diet and exercise and one thing that worked really well for me was a peddle device that you can use while sitting in a regular chair. I think I bought in online from Lane Bryant and it got me going until I could take on more activity. Good luck! You are on the right track!!

Swimming. Full range-of-motion (ROM) movements on all your joints, starting with light or zero weight. Cycling machines are great for strengthening knee muscles but start gradually. The ROM will improve flexibility but you can also try some yoga moves for variety.

My sympathies with your knees, LadySabu. If you're comfortable with swimming and it's convenient for you, fair enough. However, you wouldn't be alone in not wanting to strip off and go public in your Nearly Nothings, especially when you're overweight. I've lost over 70 lbs so far and *still* can't face it! Instead, I'd recommend doing daily calisthenics at home, certain Pilates and yoga moves, and even some of the exercises from Mark Lauren's 'You are Your Own Gym'. (There are some demonstrated on U-tube but I'd recommend the book, which has a larger range of them and gives lots of good clear advice about nutrition and other things.) Improving your lean muscle tone and strength will help you lose body fat and help support your joints better. And good luck!

All good suggestions so I will offer something to keep in mind. As your weight comes off your ability to stand and walk longer periods will increase, hopefully. At least, that's how it worked for me. So be kind to yourself during this period and focus on eating nutritious and healthy. It's an 80/20 thing - 80% of it is food; the rest is exercise. Until then .. the swimming and chair biking sounds good too. I have bad knees and bad back too. I hate pain from trying to do what my body wouldn't let me do and am grateful it's available now.

I'm not losing WEIGHT. I'm converting FAT to MUSCLE to be healthier.

Can't say for sure for you, but, as I faithfully worked out, my knees got better and better. I have much more range of motion and experience pain less often with activity. It's taken about 2 yrs of effort but I feel so much better, stronger and stable on my feet! All the best to you!!

Thank you to all for the advise, I saw a physiotherapist through the Council yesterday and she has given me exercises to do in the pool and told me to do senior strength training and has given me some names of places to go, so I am arranging that now, I will let you all know how I go.
