I'm just wondering as someone who was shocked at my latest lab results showing my total cholesterol and triglycerides and LDL were higher than they should be. So many of the FS family is doing keto or other low carb/high fat diets. I don't understand that I never see anyone talking about high cholesterol. Is it not a concern, or is nobody being tested for it? Am I worrying too much about it? It's higher than it should be but not at the point I need medication for it. I went online to find how much cholesterol we should have daily and one answer said 300mg a day if there is no problem, and 200mg a day or less if cholesterol is high. I've changed my settings in my food journal to show how much I am having. I understand the idea behind low carb/high fat diet. But shouldn't it be healthy fat like nuts, avocados, olive oil? I just wonder because I see so many pictures of salami, bacon, ham, burgers, people cooking with bacon grease, etc and I'll look at journals that show people are consuming 500,600,900 grams of cholesterol a day. Is it a controversial subject? I remember quite a few years ago I went to Weight Watchers and they limited eggs to no more than 4 a week because of cholesterol. Later they seemed okay with eggs. I'm not criticizing anyone's WOE just trying to understand why I don't read more about heart and cholesterol problems and people on heart healthy diets. Maybe it's more of an age issue. I know my cholesterol wasn't checked until I was 30 when I was told it was low, like a vegetarian. Then they only checked it every 5 years or so. Now my doctor is checking it all the time as well as a test for inflammation that has something to do with the heart. I'm surprised my cholesterol is going up as I am losing weight. Just wondering if anyone has information they'd like to share or have an understanding that I don't.

I think the best thing to do is to go by what your doctor says. There is "TMI" out there, (Too Much Information). I am trying to keep it simple and it is working. I have removed sugar from my diet, including sodas, I'm trying to eat whole foods, meats, legumes, vegetables, fruits, and a bit of whole grains only. I am watching portion control too. I eat healthy fats, I cook with olive oil and I eat almonds & avocados. I bring my lunch everyday to work. I have a lot of food allergies so it helps me to eat whole foods anyway as I am allergic to eggs and many other foods, so that removes a lot of processed items anyway. I have come to the point where I don't feel like I am on a diet. I'm not saying anything negative about Keto,as I have not looked into it as what I am doing is working for my body. My goal has been to lose 20 lbs. It has been slow and steady, approximately 1 lb a week. Some weeks I am up for some reason, but the weight loss has be consistent for the most part. Last time I saw my doctor, she was happy with where I was going. She said don't do fad diets, and she did tell me to remain on medications. I have a atrial flutter so I am assuming that is why. I Zumba twice a week and I walk three times a week. I'm feeling wonderful and this is now a easy WOE for me. I do know that medical science says that high cholesterol can be inherited, which my family has passed that along to me. I am in my early 60's and I am 2 lbs from my WW goal. I Hope this information has helped you.

Little Red - sounds like we are eating about the same way. I usually have avocado and almonds or walnuts every day. Trying to eat more vegetables, eat fruit (including a small glass of orange or pineapple juice) most days. I cook with olive oil so giving up butter wasn't difficult. Giving up sodas is difficult, they were my daily treat. Your doctor sounds like mine, when I told him I was reading a lot about Keto he shook his head and said it's okay to have healthy fats, but absolutely no processed meat and to try to give up dairy. The reason for my original post is to find out if any of the Keto people really don't have issues with cholesterol with their high fat diet. Some seem to eat just healthy fats but I see so many posts with pictures of processed meats and statements that they used bacon grease for some recipes. Keto seems to work I just don't understand why all of a sudden my cholesterol is above normal while I've been eating very little meat, no processed meat and have lost weight. We are about the same age and I have about 25-30 pounds to go. Good luck to you! By the way, my niece had a cat named "Little Red".

Hi Fritzy,
I cut out sodas as I needed to cut out caffeine, I started drinking sparkling water, Now when I want something like that I drink "Sparkling Ice" It claims to have no sugar (it does use the sugar substitute however). Regarding the processed meats I'm with your doctor. I remember reading one time on the American Heart Assoc.'s website that the last time bacon became "in vogue" there was an actual uptick in heart problems in the country. To me I'm going to go by what my doctor says. For me it cuts out all the confusing chatter that we get daily. When I see the pictures on FS I wonder too, the way I look at it is that WOE works for them, however there are thin people that have terrible eating habits and high cholesterol, and don't forget that bacon and processed meats is a carcinogenic too! For me I will stick with what the experts say. I get yearly blood tests, I am on the lowest dose of statin but since I have the "flutter" I have decided that i'm gong to stay on them to help protect my heart. Good Luck to you as well. Lil Red

Hi Little Red,
My niece got me a water infuser bottle for Christmas along with a recipe book for fruit infused water. I've been putting berries and pineapple in and the water is less boring so I am drinking more. I love bacon and all the other processed meats, but I'm not having them except once in awhile if I go to a breakfast buffet where I can't pass up the kielbasa or bacon. I feel if I've asked my doctor for guidance and he spends the time helping me and suggesting what I need to do, that I need to try and do it. I don't want to go back to see him and have him see no change in my weight or lab results and say, "oh, what you said to do, I didn't do it". How do you eat? Seems like most people here are on low carb/high fat diets. I try to limit processed foods and watch calories. I also try to get some fiber in the diet. I've read we should get 25 grams of fiber a day. I tried doing that once while staying within 1200 calories. Just trying to do that meant having hardly any processed foods and eating lots of berries, peas or other beans and potato with the skin. Still hardly ever made it to 25 grams of fiber.

Here is an idea that just popped into my head, maybe your doctor can refer you to a dietitian, it may be a simple modification to what you are doing with your WOE now? It would be easy to give the dietitian what you have on FS from your food log. I'm the same way with my doctor too, I figure she is on my side, she is just trying to do her job and help me be healthy. Regarding the low carb/high fat diets, I feel like people are looking to take the weight off quicker, but I don't understand how they can eat that way all the time and keep weight off? For me I want to have a real life style change, so I take the weight off and keep it off. I am there pretty much already I think. I'm a Grandma and I want to see my grand babies grow up! Also, I have a non scale victory to share! I have a pair of jeans on today that I haven't had on for over 15 yrs! LOL they aren't too out of style they are boot cut. Have a great week end.

Very interesting question as I also wonder about all that meat and bacon! Unfortunately no one on the Keto diet has answered yet. Hopefully I can figure out how to follow as it would be nice to get answers. There is a doctor who talks about it: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=dr.+berg+keto+and+colesterol Perhaps some answers although I'm not advocating for this doctor since I am not an expert in anything! I only know what works for me and it's not the Keto diet!

Read https://www.amazon.com/Big-Fat-Surprise-Butter-Healthy/dp/1451624425 - there is a ton of misleading info re meat and cholesterol put out by government. And many, many doctors aren’t current with the best science. Sugars, carbs, are the killers, not meat and fat... I’m no Keto dieter, but eat 2 eggs most mornings, lots of veggies, meat for lunch, and dinner... and very few carbs... 12 lbs down since Jan 1. Fats and meats take away hunger for me, keeping me in my caloric range with ease.

Glad to see some replies, but not from anyone following keto. I don't think my cholesterol is high enough to be a worry at this point, but I want it to be within normal ranges. I'm avoiding things that have high amounts of cholesterol such as egg yolks, shrimp and beef. It isn't hard for me to keep it below 200mg a day. Actually I don't think I even reach 100 normally. But I look at food journals of some people and se over 1000 mg of cholesterol when people are eating 5 or 6 eggs plus all kinds of processed meats. I know years ago when I went to Weight Watchers they suggested not having more than 4 eggs (yolks) a week because of cholesterol, but they've changed that. I think there is some disagreement about eggs. Little Red, I've thought about talking to a dietician. Just want to see if losing weight and eating healthy will get the inflammation down within normal guidelines. I'm hoping to be at my goal weight by my next doctor appointment in June.

Back then what they thought: eggs are high in cholesterol and high LDH cholesterol in human increased risk of heart disease, hence don't eat things with high in cholesterol.

What we know now from current research: cholesterol in our blood does not come from the cholesterol in food we eat but is produced by our liver stimulated by saturated and trans fat we eat. This is info that has come out in the past couple years, health practitioners need to stay up to date and there is a lot of new info daily.

A lot of assumptions were made about many things back in the day, and a lot of it has stick.

I eat a lot of stuff with cholesterol except eggs, which I don't eat due to inflammatory properties. My doctor wants me to eat more fat so I can get my cholesterol and triglycerides up. My good and bad cholesterols are low, my doctor is not telling me to eat cholesterol, those days are gone.

BTw, it's honestily easy to achieve the fiber goals daily. My daily dinner is about 2x the daily fiber recommended (or so).
This the link to my cookpad page: https://tinyurl.com/ybmy56fb

The trick is..replace potatoes with cauliflower and eat more spinach. Done Smile
The problem I have with keto (personal opinion incoming). Fat does not sate me. I can eat unlimited amounts of it and not be sated very well (20 buffalo wings done)... I figured out a bit ago that protein and fiber sate me. My all you can eat soup basically knocks me dead in my tracks (ooh and my greek yogurt coleslaw takes the edge off quick (less then 100 calories). recently, I don't use coleslaw mix anymore.. just dip romaine lettuce.. awesome.

A few other notable veggies that can be used for low carb high fiber: Spring Mix / Romaine Lettuce / Cauliflower / Spinach / Brocolli / Asparagus / Zuccinni (noodles yum).
I eat five pounds of veggies a night (about 600 calories)... so, yeah I get my fiber Smile

Just from a real keto way of life , ie, not a test study, my doctor is happier with my cholesterol results than 5 years ago , I am now in ketosis and have been for 10 years or so, have lost 5 sts , mostfy a long time ago , and was once a type 2 diabetic who is know being considered misdiagnosed , blood sugar low and good closesterol perfect, I don't eat grains or any carbs if I can help it ,a bit of green veg or salad from time to time .

Low cholesterol is not immediate , patience

since cholesterol is a form of fat, I've always considered it might be actually processed by the body during ketosis... but I have no real idea. The body recycles cholesterol itself.. and creates it, so.. some of us run a little high or low, I'd not be concerned other then for extremes.

I guess cholesterol isn't a concern until lab tests show it's high!

I started keto in August because I had my blood sugar come back close to 200. They were going to start me on medication. I have had high Cholesterol for YEARS - (5 or so?) I just got my tests back this morning and my doctor was ECSTATIC! My a1c is at 5.0. My GOOD cholesterol is in normal range as is my "bad." BOTH in NORMAL RANGE for the first time in 5 years - and my diet is 75 - 80% fat. I really figured my doctor was going to freak - but he was like - whatever you're doing - keep doing it. Oh yeah - and I've gone from 280 to around 225 - so there's that.

Hello. I think you may also want to consider the types of omega fats you are consuming. Omega 3 fats are supposed to help reduce cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure. Foods such as fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, albacore tuna, herring), avocado, walnuts, flaxseed and green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach have omega 3 fats. You can also take omega 3 oil supplements such as fish oil and flaxseed oil to help reduce cholesterol. Dr. Axe has a website that focuses on how to use food as medicine. Here are some pages regarding Omega 3 fats https://draxe.com/omega-3-benefits-plus-top-10-omega-3-foods-list/ and also on how to lower cholesterol naturally https://draxe.com/lower-cholesterol-naturally-fast/ Dr. Axe's website if full of great info on ALL health issues and how to use food rather than drugs to improve health and wellness.
