I would not trust either number, but 400 seems to be closer to reality. If I burnt all the calories FS tells me I burn I would have lost myself completely many years ago. I use stationary bike daily and mine shows less than 300 cal per hour of rather intense exercise. Never was able to reach "moderate" speed of 13 miles per hour and keep going at this speed for an hour.

THANKS FOR THOSE GREAT ANSWERS...ITS NOT WHAT EXERCISE I ENJOY AT THIS POINT BUT RATHER WHAT I CAN DO TO GET SOME AEROBICS...I WENT FROM 30 YEARS BEHIND A DESK TO HARD WORK OUTSIDE ..ON MY FEET ALLDAY AND LIFTING HEAVY PLANTS AND TREES..BECAUSE OF MY WEIGHT I HAVE TWISTED MY ANKLES REPEATEDLY. GOT PLANTAR FACIITUS IN BOTH FEET AND MOST LATELY DISLOCATED MY CUBOID BONE IN ONE FOOT....SO SEEMS LIKE SWIMMING OR BIKING ARE MY ONLY CHOICES...IM HOPING WITH THE WEIGHT GONE I CAN DO THINGS I REALLY ENJOY.

"Stationary" may play a role in this. Outside avoiding cars and dogs as well as looong hills is a bit different, even though you occasionally get to coast and stop at intersections.

i ride my road bike on a trainer and use a program called zwift..it in turn transfers the stats to strava..i noticed that the stats i get from strava are usually about 1/3 of what fs says...and i trust the stats from strava more then fs...fs seems to over compensate for the numbers in their exercise part of the plan...my 2 cents..

Here's my two cents. I notice when i run and enter that on FS - FS reduces my calorific on the rest segment. So, as I was trying to figure out the over pay by FS for the exercise, I realise that FS appears include your stationary expenditure with your exercise component. If you're burning 500 cal an hour by running i.e. physical exertion is arguably the only record a treadmill can make not other physiological functions... are you then also burning 100 cal for base function, does that get us to the differential? Hmm .. it's a quirk but I think FS includes compensation for base function.

The FS exercise app is totally off base in terms of calories for me. I wear a heart-monitor type of fitbit, and my resting calories don't match the FS measurement ever. I would trust the equipment at the gym because you pay the gym to help you meet your fitness goals, so they have an interest in telling you the truth about your efforts there.

Why not try investing in a heart rate monitor? I wear a polar watch A300 and a HRM when I go to the gym. I like you do an hour on the bike every visit before my light weights. Calories burnt vary from 400 to 510 dependant on how hard I work. I know this is based on my height, weight and HR so it's pretty accurate. The bike reading at the gym of calories burnt is normally 15-20% under the reality. I personally find it really motivating when I can see how many 'real' calories I'm burning off.
Today was 612 cals in total and Wednesdays was 721......my legs were tired today!

try clicking on that activity in your exercise diary. It should bring up the specifics and allow you to change the time in much the same way as you can change the amount of food in your food diary.
