I was looking at my journal and it seems like a recent entry I wrote is not showing. Could it have been deleted without my knowledge?

Blech. That sucks. I figured it was likely due to some technical error; I was sort of hoping there was a recovery option. It's not like it was anything revolutionary or life changing, but retyping stuff is annoying. :-/

I hate when that happens (not just here - other online forms too)! Sometimes, when I've typed a lot and don't want to accidentally "lose" it when submitting it, I'll highlight the entire post and hit "ctrl" and "c" to copy it, so if it gets "lost," I can simply paste it ("ctrl" and "v" ) into a form again, or into a Word document - if there is a problem with the website Smile I should do that more often. Thanks for the reminder!

Christy, I don't know if that would actually help in this particular situation, though that is a good strategy in general. My experience was that the post was successfully published and now it's gone, no indication of it ever existing only a day or two later. As I mentioned earlier, this particular entry wasn't some prize jewel of writing or anything. It was somewhat experimental because I was writing in Spanish to try and hone my skills (my keyboard is equipped to do the correct accent marks, but I don't know how to access the symbols as it's a secondary or tertiary option, so I don't know if it even read intelligibly to a native or more advanced Spanish speaker). Not having that is mildly disappointing, but more than that I start getting a little paranoid. What's to keep my other journal entries from just vanishing? I know and mostly realize this is over-reacting...I think, but my journal is my main resource from this site. It's what I use to track my progress and reflect on personal growth (literally and figuratively). I just get nervous being more vividly aware of how tenuous this support is because it has helped me in good measure. Maybe nothing is really different and I was happier in my ignorance, but the reminder of it being beyond my control is a little hard to swallow. :-/

I think I saw the post that you said was in Spanish, if that's the post you're speaking of that disappeared. After I commented above, I noticed there was a journal entry from you from an hour before, but I now don't think that was the post that disappeared. So are you saying that the journal entry was published - live - and then later it was gone? I haven't seen any other Spanish posts, so maybe, because it wasn't in English, FatSecret thought it was spam and deleted it? I don't know. Just trying to understand what happened.

That's right. I wrote something in Spanish and I KNOW it was published. I even commented on it myself to offer a description of my background in Spanish, but the whole thing is gone now. I had wondered if it being not English somehow flagged it for removal like you say if the system suspected it was spam or something. I see other members sometimes write bilingually. I hadn't asked before if they had similar experiences, but it just seems odd/ poor design for that to be the reason. I am trying to understand it myself and I'm not having much luck. Sad

I see. If you remember the people who wrote bilingually, you could send them a message and ask them Smile It's too bad that that happened. I didn't know FatSecret "policed" the posts!

I saw your Spanish post, but didn't read it, other than to notice it was in Spanish. What a shame it vanished after all your effort.

I posted something earlier today, it took me quite a while to think about and type, and it was there, but now it is gone, and although I do ChristyLA's thing with ctrl c, so I do still have it, I am reluctant to post it again, in case it was found to have offended someone, and "policed" out. Don't want to get banned for intransigent behaviour....

THANK YOU! It's simple but kind of amazing how comforting your testimony is. It helps me know that I'm not going crazy...or at least I'm not alone in that regard. Razz Is there a site moderator we could contact directly to ask questions like these? I imagine the disappearance was a fluke in your case as well. Though if something was being banned, the smart thing to do from a moderator stand point would be to tell the offender what was offensive and give a warning that further violations would result in restrictions/ penalties. Otherwise it seems unfair to expect changes when there is no clear direction or explanation for what's happening.

I am of the opinion that there are two kinds of ways to offend people- through commission (i.e, deliberate effort) and unintentionally. I understand and agree that we should avoid being outright offensive. However, I think everyone should be allowed measures of grace to offend unintentionally. What I mean by this is NOT that we shouln't be careful with what we say and disregard the possibility of being misunderstood if our communication is less clear. Instead, I think it's better to have the premise that things said that were offensive were bungled attempts to share well intended thoughts. In which case the same kind of treatment applies- clear warning for the first offense, increasing penalties for subsequent, conscious/ explicit transgressions.

TL;DR: I was attempting to convey that ideally good intentions should be considered the default until proven otherwise, and if you are not meaning to offend you shouldn't have to worry that your post would be removed without warning. Smile

Hi Mrs Tofu, I private messaged you, but thought I would do this one public. I found a thread today with 10 comments on it, and yesterday it had 15. So it isn't just you and me! Be reassured.

:-/ Thanks Janie! If it is the site enforcing moderation/ censorship (vs members deleting their own comments), I wish I could have an explanation as to why. Personally it seems to me that it would save more time that way. And if someone was persistently defiant of site conduct guidelines they always have the power to ban an account outright, or so I'd think.
