Lose Fat First?

Hi, I was wondering if its true that you need to lose fat before you try to gain muscle? Someone told me that if you don't you just poof out because the muscle is under the fat? This sounds dumb but I would like to do ab work for my back but i'm afraid that it will make me appear larger before I lose the fat. This may be a dumb question, Sorry.

doing strength training exercises, you will build muscle firmness and strength, but it won't build up so big that it will make your 'fat' look bigger. As you gain muscle it will also help you burn your fat stores so go for it. It's a win win situation.
Eat a good nutritious diet and stay away from processed foods, some cardio to get the heart rate up and some strength training all combined is a winning combination.
There are many here who have succeeded so keep asking those questions, don't be shy...
If it is a plant, eat it, if it comes from a plant, don't!

Not a dumb question, but what you heard about "poofing out" is dumb. You can do both at the same time, and, in fact, building the muscle will help you lose the fat buy burning more of it even when you're fast asleep. There are people who fiercely subscribe to one or the other, but I believe exercise is like balanced eating. You'll benefit most by having a nice balance of all kinds of exercise. I think cross-training in all areas is really helpful.

It depends on what you are trying to do; but first let me explain to you a little bit about the human body and biology your body does not care about the way it looks, all it does is respond to external stimuluses’ if you are cutting weight or dieting to lose weight you are in a caloric deficit your body will make up this deficit by consuming both fat and muscles, your body will not build muscle when in a deficit your body is programed for survival adding muscle will simple add to the caloric deficit it is in your body will simply not do this. That is why your friend told you to lose the fat first.
2nd there is what is called bulking or caloric surpluses diet this is the opposite, when in a caloric surplus your body will build and store muscle and fat.
3rd and last there is maintenances or diet to stay the same weight it is possible to build muscles and gain fat but only very little.

Yes this is somewhat true but you can always cut later.

That would depend on how much weight you gain.

There are no dump questions, just remember that your body can’t do everything at the same time for best results you will have to take advantage of your body’s natural tendencies.
And last thing your diet is the most important thing a bad diet can sabotage you a lot more than not doing your exercise correctly.
