Today I skipped breakfast, and on an empty stomach (little choice involved in that decision) I went to a twelve o'clock fitness class. It was insane! I was doing squats on a boscu ball, push up lunges and dozens of squats...and the instructor basically gave no breaks..felt a bit like I was gonna faint and headed to the closest starbucks with limited time and selection and had a turkey panini. Get home thinking oh no I am out of ketosis till I see is the stick is brighter purple then it has ever been.

Question...Why is this?????I thought eating a panini would decimate the ketosis??

Well, I'm not sure I have an actual scientific answer but I can deduce some possibilities/hunches.

Working out in a very fasted state has shown a lot of benefits, one being increased insulin sensitivity. During your workout you more than likely used all stored glycogen and your Panini probably just replaced some of it without taking the body out of ketosis? .... It makes somewhat sense but I might be missing a few details that put the whole story together.

The sticks are not a reliable way to test for ketosis as Dr. Atkins states in his book. I bought them at one point myself but they were not accurate & I was told by several senior lifetime maintenance members on Atkins not to use them. The best way to tell is are you having cravings, to you have energy, and are you losing weight (either slow or fast depending on what phase you are in & how much you have to lose. I can tell because I drop anywhere from 2/10 of a pound to a full pound per day when I am doing induction. I thought there was only one atkins book "a new atkins for a new you" but found "the atkins diet revolution" which has (to me) a lot more info in it that I found helpful. I have been on Atkins on & off for over 2 years & still go back to those 2 books on a regular basis to refresh myself on the facts versus what I have tweeked the diet to be. Every time a try to "cheat" the atkins induction approach, I re-read the books & see why I am not losing weight Surprised) My understanding is that, if you are on induction & you eat bread, sugar, anything in the carb/sugar category with over 5 carbs, you slow down the process of switching your body from burning carbs for fuel to burning fat for fuel. It then takes you longer to complete induction. I have experienced this through trial an error by noticing that after sugar/carb intake, it takes at least 2 days of STRICT 20 net carbs or less with induction BY THE BOOK & TO THE LETTER" to get back to losing weight. And, mind you, this is with running for at least an hour in a fasted stated too! The books say not to go more than 6 waking hours without eating because it can spike your blood sugar level. I get up & go running less than an hour later, run for an hour to 1.5 hours, then eat protein right away (eggs, cheese, etc.) along with 33ounces of water.

I read the book and Dr. Atkins said buying the sticks could be helpful. The only reason I bought them is because they were suggested in his book.

I find they are reliable because I was testing before I started this diet and they turned up negative.

I have been doing induction for three weeks and have lost 11 lbs. I think it is working for me. I am not hungry/having cravings/and I have a lot of energy. I am planning on coming out of induction in another week 12 lbs lighter and then will continue with stage two. I will have some fruits and some vegetables and eat healthy. Thats the main thing.

Well that sounds like a bit overkill. I am losing weight, not having any issues. I don't like feeling like im in the military on Atkins..there is no need. I might transition over to Paleo down the road anyways. I don't like people telling me what I should or shouldn't do either..as its not their right.

BTW BEllA I have been in induction for over three weeks, and the panini was related to not having another food source available and that is past the two week recommended induction stage. If you bothered to read my journals and food diary you will see I was pretty strict about my induction during the first two weeks.

People should also read the book, so if they folly that's not my problem. Seriously you should get off my case...and take a chill pill. If you have a problem too bad. Like who made you queen of fatsecret.

Ya you were around 116 when I joined six months ago. You are still the same. I was 164 when I joined and I am now 146. Seems to me I've beat you on the numbers. On another note...since you want to be so helpful..tell me how I block annoying trolls.

Gisme,

I am so sorry that your question devolved into what it did. It really bothers me when a person comes on and asks a question and receives either a snarky or down right mean response that doesn't take into account that there are so many nuances to each of our eating disorder that painting an individual with a broad brush is counterproductive to what we are here for -- to lose weight and thus improve our health in the short and long term. More than anything it is especially important that we support each other regardless of what path we take to get to our goal.

Having said all that I want to say that, I encourage you not to sweat the small stuff such as if you have a paninni one day, miss a meal, or work out strenuously on an empty stomach. Whatever. If your overall food plan includes the suggested three meals three snacks and you are sticking for the majority of the time to the allowable foods on the list as well as keeping an eye on your carb macros, you'll find that you'll not only lose the weight but you will be a happier person. I am not saying don't be vigilant. I'm encouraging you to not sweat the small stuff. One pannini in three weeks isn't going to derail your body's efforts in my experience.

So keep doing what you are doing as it seems to be working so far. If it stops working, then you can adjust your approach to losing. Whatever you do, don't give up. Stick with it. Stick with it. Stick with it. You can do it!
