Are you aware that the information posted on this site is available during a google search? Search your username and for the sake of speed - my fat secret.

I was embarrassed and humiliated when a co-worker just found my weight and other private information from this site on Google. If it was not your intension to broadcast this information on the internet I recommend that you take steps to ensure a private site.

Shock Great tip, thanks! I never would have thought to look for myself, so I never think anyone else would, either!

All you need to do is select "contact" at the bottom of the screen and request your username be changed. You just need to tell them a different username, then people you know won't find you by searching. I did this awhile back, but I also have my settings on private and don't have my picture on here either.

I wasn't looking for myself but someone was!! I don't usually mind what they find but I thought my weight was a bit personal.

I understand...I just never considered the idea of anyone going out of their way to look for me!

If I'm not wrong there are public and private settings for this site (I could be thinking of another that I use). Have you seen anything like that in your control panel? It might fix it.

There is a dropdown to set your weight and journal to "with everyone", "with buddies" and "private". The default seems to be with everyone.

Wow - I had 323K results; good thing I never used my real name even in the sign up. I've READ here that if you put a real photo that the photo can be googled too and shows up elsewhere (like facebook), FYI.

Interesting. But not surprised. I had a nick I used years ago and it still comes up. And it was used by many others too. Just like my ClassicRocker nick.

Just a tidbit of info for Sue. No one, and I mean, no one knew how much I weighed. Not even my husband or son. But then, neither of them thought of me as being fat. When I began my journey, lost a few pounds then lost more, I got brave. I started telling everyone. Primarily because after a 40lbs. loss, no one still noticed. So I told them.

Now, I work my program. Do my thing and if someone finds out how much I weighed and how much I weigh now and can't respect the fact that I lost 60lbs., tough munchies. I'm proud of what I'm doing.

You could also obscure your presence on the web, e.g. make it very hard for anyone to find out anything about you and your activities, and that'd protect you from things like a profile defaulting to 'public' view.

How?

Choose the name of a popular movie.

Inception
Faster
Titanic (maybe not good for a diet site heh)
Ratatouille
Fast and Furious

etc...

Thank you. I really was not aware that this could happen on FS. Tonight a classic radio station announcer made mention that Google could divulge information from Facebook. I had no idea this could happen on FS as well. I just removed my photo, and will be seen as a long stemmed glass (LOL) for now.

I read the same exact thing in another thread when I was considering uploading a before and after photo of myself recently. This poor guy said he uploaded his photos early on and could not delete them afterward.
SO very glad to have been warned about that potential issue. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

No one but a public person should ever post personal information about themselves using their real name on the internet. And that would be someone with a reputation they were trying to maintain, like an author or some other expert.

I did an experiment. I googled ClassicRocker. Oodles with the same name, various variations came up. Googled ClassicRocker Fatsecret. Several of mine came up. Lots came up that I wasn't even a poster on.

One that did have "me", I clicked on the name and avatar and the "sign-in" page popped up. No one, unless another member could see any of my personal information. Or someone who knew my password.

Maybe others can try it and see if the same thing happens. Make sure you're signed out of your account.

I googled mummydee and of course there were many, found one with a fs connection, clicked on it and it opened the forum and showed my posts. I have private set in my settings!

Were you signed in here when you tried? I was originally and it went through.

Maybe the trick is to put your settings to private.

Hope others see what you did and make the necessary adjustment.

No way to set posts to private, that I am aware of, personally. It's that way on most forum sites, unfortunately.

Mummy, I double checked yours while I was signed out, just out of curiosity. Can't see your journal, weight, diet history, etc, just as you mentioned. Thought I'd let you know.

Is there a way to change your username on your current account? If there is, someone please share because I'm wondering now, heh. I thought that wasn't possible here, unless someone made a new account, obviously.
