Well, using net carbs or total carbs won't affect your calories very much because carbs are only 4 calories each. Generally speaking, counting net carbs allows for more variety in your menu, and, of course, Atkins is all about net carbs.

I follow a woe called NK (Nutritional Ketosis) from The Art & Science of Low Carb Living by Phinney/Volek so I count total carbs and usually keep them around 30g a day.

If I may, it depends on your total carbs a little bit. If you are under 50g *total* carbs a day then 5g of sodium is usually about right. That sounds like a lot, and it is, but it is any combination of food and added salt. Usually you'll get 2 to 3 grams from what you are eating and a couple of cups of bouillon a day rounds it out. I use bouillon cubes in some of the dishes I cook to keep my sodium up.

When you are under 50g of total carbs a day, the way your kidneys handle sodium changes and you need more than you might otherwise need.

You have to self experiment a bit to find the right level. I know I can eat 5+ grams a day and be okay but some people are very sensitive to sodium even following NK and have to moderate their intake but I think they were still getting 2 to 3 grams a day.

If you are eating LC (but not NK) then you still need more sodium than a SAD eater needs and it is something to experiment with.

Usually when you are experiencing leg cramps it is because you are not getting enough sodium. When you are low on sodium the body sacrifices potassium to conserve sodium and that is part of the reason for the cramps. So take a few swigs of pickle juice or a cup or two of broth to fix yourself up.
