I wondering if anyone else has had the bad luck that I've had while being on this this weight wise? I've put on almost a stone in about 6 months and after doing some research I've realised that despite working out for 80 mins a day and living on tuna that this is what's preventing any results Sad has anyone had this problem and then come off the drug? If so, did the weight fall off easily or is it still such a struggle when it's out of your system? Any input or advice would be appreciated

Hi Sasha-Anne. I'm not on Depo Provera, but I noticed some weight gain after starting Cilest, too. I couldn't lose the surplus for ages (~ 1/2 stone), but after a 8-9 months my body "settled in", and I could lose it again. Hope that helps. BTW, I'm also from Ireland! Smile

The depo Provera is the first hormonal contraception I've used and I was told there was no real side effects, yet I've gained so much and I can honestly say I did not get an appetite increase and haven't been over eating..when I looked up about it it seems everyone out there is having the same problem with the weight being impossible to get off..if it was a pill at least I could come off it straight away but this will be in my system till at least the 6th of June (that's when I'd be due my next injection) and I'm not sure how long it will take for it to fully be out of my system..it's really getting me down that it seems to be to blame for the weight gain and the lack of results, I'm not sure really what else I can do except cry until my body goes back to normal!! Sad

don't worry, it's only a temporary thing, no need to be upset! just ask your doctor to switch to something else, if you find this method unsuitable for you. Hormones will need a bit of time to re-balance themselves after stopping any form of contraception, but if you just switch, it shouldn't be a problem.

I'd be afraid of switching to something that will also make me gain weight so I'm thinking of staying off everything for a while to see if it makes a difference..it's just so disheartening when I'm genuinely putting in so much effort and I've seen no results Sad apparently the depo Provera reduces bone density and can cause osteoporosis which was also something I was never warned about! I feel like an idiot for not researching it properly when I decided to go on it, it just sounded so handy Sad

I had the same thing happen Sasha-Anne... Copper IUD is the only form of long-term contraception I know of without hormones.

Was it depo Provera you were on Suzy? And did the weight come off ok once you stopped it or are you in the same position as me? I don't know how long this will be in my system and if my metabolism will return to normal once it's gone or if it'll be a struggle to get this weight off..it's so frustrating because before I took it I was maintaining the weight I was,and my eating habits didn't change and I still put o so much in such a short space of time..and nothing seems to be working in terms of weight loss..never again!

I am currently on Depo and I did gain some weight in the first year or two, but I wasn't eating well or exercising so that didn't help. I've been on it for at least 5 years now and have started eating healthier and exercising and I have been able to lose. I think after your body get used to it things level off, but it takes time. The IUD's are too expensive for me at one shot, but the Depo is more reasonable. I used to blame all of the gain on the Depo, but looking back I'm sure most of it was my eating. I'd talk to your doctor about all of your options before you stop. I hope you find what works for you!
Goals for 2014:
Complete Couch to 5K- DONE!!!
Sign up for and complete a 5K- DONE!! 35 mins.
Plan at least 3 outings with the family that involve being active- 2 done

Ahh I hated Depo. I was on it for 4 years, and not only did it make me gain 70 lbs, it messed with my hormones - I was an emotional wreck. Once i stopped, I lost the weight (but gained it back again unfortunately... workin on that)

That being said, everyone is different. I have a friend who has been on depo for 10+ years and has never had any ill effects.

Tamara did you find it took long to get out of your system? I got my last injection on 15th of march and am not sure if it should be gone after the 12 weeks or if it'll take much longer..I just can't wait for my body to go back to normal, I can't believe the impact it's had on my weight loss journey and just to my confidence over all..

Like I said everyone is different. But it took me over 6 months to get TOM back. Then probably another 6 months for it to regulate again.

I went on the pill. I'm now off the pill and just using calendar meathod. I hate putting anything in my body. I stopped the pill november of last year and I'm just getting regular periods now.

Basically what I'm saying is if you put something into your body that it hasnt produced itself, you will have side effects. Usually the longer you take them the longer it will take for your body to return to normal.

Hang in there.

Yep. It took about 6 months after I stopped for my body to get back to normal. It affects your appetite, that's why it made dieting so difficult for me. I was always hungry. I'd like to add that I had similar problems on a few different pills I tried also, which is one of the reasons I went the IUD route. Plus, I don't have to worry about it for 10 years, which is nice.

That didn't work for me... I guess I was too irregular. Had baby girl #4 that way. Laughing

Laughing It happens! Nothing is 100% except for abstinence Smile

I'm in the process of setting up appointmet to getting tubes tied (covered by insurance, HIS procedure isn't, go figure). We agreed we'll get another dog instead of having another baby. Laughing

Hi lady's I have heard that depo makes you gain weight also but each time I've been on it it has helped me lose weight. The first time I was on it I was at my heaviest weight ever which was 256 lbs. Then I started the depo shot because of my bad cramps and the fact that I just wanted to get rid of my cycle lol. After I started getting the shots my weight started dropping and before I knew it I was 214 lbs. I went to see a Dr to make sure I was still healthy an that nothing was wrong because my weight was dropping but he said I was fine. I got off depo to have my first and only child who will be one next week (YAY). When I was pregnant I gained weight so I went from 214 to 247. After giving birth I went back on depo and I can proudly say that I have lost 45 lbs and no I'm not on a diet or eating right. I have not been on here since I was about 227 lbs but I think I have made some progress. Its just that depo provera does everyone differently because a few of my friends said it made them gain weight also and some said they lost weight. Wink

Hey everyone! I just wanted to update this to try to help anyone who had the same problem I did with weight gain on depo Provera..things have finally turned around for me and I have to put it down to these three things; reflexology, cod liver oil and flaxseed. I knew that people used reflexology for fertility reasons and thought I'd give it a go to try and help my periods come back..when I explained to my reflexologist about the depo etc she advised me to take cod liver oil and flaxseed as they are good for hormone regulation and could help, so I went out and bought some.. Girls in three weeks (two reflexology sessions and taking the cod liver oil and flaxseed most days) not only did I lose 6lbs but my period is back!! It's the first bit of weightloss I've had in about a year, and I will add id given up on the gym and very strict diet when I lost this weight..(not eating very bad but allowed myself alcohol and chocolate!) So if anyone sees this and was having weight problems from the depo I strongly recommend these three things to help your body recover Smile good luck!!
