Hey guys,

So many people are talking Intermittent Fasting, 5:2, Calorie shifting, and what every else we call it these days.

I do it myself, after I discovered this way of eating and the benefits I get from it, there is no looking back. I don't think my weight loss journey has ever been easier, and I am now at maintenance, using it to keep myself in check.

I would HIGHLY recommend that you watch this:

http://video.pbs.org/video/2363162206/

This is the show that started it all for me. What an eye opener.

This is great to watch for both those of you who wants to learn and are considering if this is an option for you, as well as for the sceptics and those simply curious.

It's a very interesting show - probably the single most interesting health documentary I have ever seen.

I went from morbidly obese to being the owner of TABDIG - a weight loss coaching service that helps people worldwide losing weight. It's been an amazing journey. From October 4th 2010 to April 3rd 2012 I lost half my body weight - 80 kilos/170 lbs. Since then, I have had two cosmetic surgeries to remove excess skin. I have now quadrupled my strength, gained several kilos in muscle mass, and today I focus on building muscle, optimizing my diet, living healthy and helping people to reach the very same goals. I am stronger, healthier, thinner, happier! If you feel that you need help losing weight, don't hesitate to send me an inbox message.

I don't think the alleged bbenefits have as yet been proven but as a way of managing calorie consumption it has its merits, I stick to an 8 hour eating window which works pretty well for me, I tend to feel hungrier in the pm so I eat only in the pm.

If it's having an extra health benefit I am unaware of great if not it still works fine calorie control wise

The show absolutely states that the benefits are NOT testes thoroughly, and they are only tested on (mostly) mice. So there are no conclusions. This is true, and they don't try to hide those facts. However, my father suffered badly from dementia, I have cancer in my bloodline and my mom had diabetes. These are the three ailments that possibly could be avoided (to a certain degree) my following this. I am definitely listening. And if this makes my weight loss journey easier, and generally makes me feel amazing - then what is there to lose? Smile

Hi I was on meds and picked up almost my ideal body weight in 2 years. I have been following a 1200 calorie a day eating plan for the last 2 months and have lost about half of the weight already. I must admit though that I dont really eat 1200 avarage a day. More like 900 to 1000 cals a day. Not because I am fasting but because I dont feel hungry. I only have 1 cheat meal in a week and on my cheat day I consume about 1300. Does it qualify as fasting. I have 5 meals a day my first meal at 7 in the morning and then a snack at about 10 in the evening as I am normally up till late. I normally only get to bed at about 2 in the morning. I battle to finish a meal hence the low cal intake. Do you have any advise on this.

Nadine, watch the show. There is a lot to learn from it. If you're eating 900-1000 per day, then you're NOT doing Intermittend Fasting. For that, you'd need to eat relatively normal most days, with a controlled calorie count if you want to lose weigh, and two days per week you need to be below 4-500 calories.

Since seeing EF&LL, I went to a fasting regime the very next day. I do the 5:2 (2 days of fasting-500 calories and 5 days of reasonable eating). I meet with my doctor about my bloodwork on Friday so we'll see if there are any benefits from that standpoint. But overall, it's really allowed me to shed pounds and I do think I eat a lot less as a result (on my feed days).

This is truly an interesting show, and I can not stress enough how much better I generally feel after I started doing the 5:2 system. I feel awesome on my low cal days, and I have more calories for the other days. What's there not to like? Smile

I, too, am a huge fan - although I'm finding it a little more difficult than when I started 3 months ago. No biggie though, it's still achievable and maintenance this way is easy.

(I lowered my goal weight and despite the green bar I'm happy to consider myself in maintenance mode.)

Hi. I added it to my regimen, too, after I started plateauing in April. I now eat 600 calories or less every Wednesday and Thursday. By Friday morning's weigh in, I usually see good things. And then I can go over a little bit on the weekends. I've done it for a month now and it's really working for me.

Okay so I tried doing low cals today after watching the vid but I had a terrible day...battled with concentration...felt nervous and out of sorts all day. I dont know if its because I cant seem to consume my full cals on a normal day. Do you think I should try and do 8 meals on a normal day so I can get my full 1200 calories and then attempt the fast day again? Or do you perhaps have any other advise....

Nadine, my question is: What issue are you having? Have you hit a plateau or something? If not, and you are losing the amount you want, I don't see the benefit of going to the fasting plan. Especially if you are having a hard time consuming all the targeted calories each day anyway. Best of luck. bp

Fasting can be difficult if you haven't done it and it takes some practice to get used to. I would try it again and experiment with types of foods, timing of when you eat, how much you eat. I found that early in the day I don't care much about food so my breakfast is around 100 calories (cottage cheese, veggies), lunch around the same (baked 4 oz fish, salad), then about 300 for dinner (food varies). I sip on a lot of water and tea during the day. I personally need a little protein to sustain me and you can cram in a lot of vegetables that have hardly any calories and it's filling. Once I found a combination of foods, I stick to those foods on nearly every fast day. But experiment and see what mix works for you. You may like just 1 large meal a day or 2 decent size meals. The fasting does get easier with time so I wouldn't give up so quickly because you didn't get it right on the first try.

Hi Draglist,
I am trying to loose more in a week. Fat that is an not muscle mass, so I am struggling to do 1200 calories a day as I feel full before I finish a meal. If calorie fasting will help to loose more in a week then I want to obviously give it a try. So the point is that Im trying to loose as much as possible without loosing muscle mass.

@ mrspackrat,
Thx for the advise, however at the moment on a normal day I eat basicaly exactly the same thing at exactly the same time everyday, but as I mentioned to draglist on normal days I cant seem to finish a full meal. Kingkeld said that he feels that he has more energy on fast days, I felt truely useless today. So if it is because I dont consume enough cals on a normal day, how do I get to a point where I can do the fasting.
